An object-oriented model for FMS control

The flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is a distributed network of heterogeneous programmable manufacturing machinery, such as assembly lines and numerically controlled machines. Despite these interconnected, programmable hardware elements, the success of building a truly flexible manufacturing system has been limited so far, owing to the lack of flexibility in its control software layer. In integrating heterogeneous machinery, many existing FMS control software systems depend structurally on specific machinery and job-scheduling strategies, and thus it is difficult to incorporate new developments in FMS organization and operational requirements. In searching for an open architecture for the FMS control software system, this paper presents an object-oriented FMS data model. Among others, it represents each physical cluster of related machinery (called a flexible manufacturing cell) as an object. To facilitate the integration of heterogeneous physical cells, such cell objects share a common protocol of interacting with the main control process through inheritance from the abstract cell class. Other related physical and abstract entities in FMS are also modelled as objects, with their similarity and difference captured in inheritance hierarchies. To verify the proposed approach experimentally, a prototype FMS control software system named FREE (FMS Runtime Executive Environment) has been implemented on top of a commercial object-oriented database system.

The design of advanced manufacturing systems entails a high flexibility in the system specification method, to allow for flexibility and efficiency in coping with the frequent design modifications. object-oriented specification methods possess the necessary expressiveness and extensibility to allow for such flexibility. In order to obtain a declarative representation of the knowledge of objects, the semantic data model of the frame-based representation method is incorporated. This extended object-oriented model can be used for specifying system behaviors. Within this model, generic object types representing general concepts in manufacturing systems are identified. These generic object types can facilitate the specification of manufacturing systems by means of an object-oriented approach. The application of the model for system specification is illustrated with reference to a typical robotic FMC. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The 1588 standard specifies a protocol enabling precise synchronization of clocks in measurement and control systems implemented with technologies such as network communication and distributed objects. The Unified modeling Language (UML) is a powerful tool for object-oriented modeling, design, and development of complex distributed systems. This paper describes an object-oriented model for the IEEE 1588 standard-v2, which has been developed using UML tool at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This model consists of the data types, datasets, entities, and devices of IEEE 1588 standard-v2. The model has been used to produce C++ source codes, and create C++ libraries for the IEEE 1588 standard-v2. With the help of this object model, the development time of IEEE 1588-basd distributed measurement and control applications can be reduced dramatically.

Automatic clustering of semantic models allows a multilevel abstraction of the same reality and reduces design complexity. This paper is concerned with the development and application of automatic clustering of Entity-Relationship (E-R) diagrams and object models. This paper does not consider physical clustering which aims at improving performance of databases but deals with conceptual clustering whose objective is to facilitate the understanding of the database schema. We provide an automatization of conceptual schema clustering leading to a unification of past approaches. Automatization is achieved through the definition of semantic distances between concepts and the use of a clustering algorithm. For entity-relationship clustering, we define three different distances (visual, hierarchical and cohesive) depending on the semantic richness. object model clustering is based on structural, semantic and communication characteristics of objects. Our approach has been implemented and applied to a great number of examples, leading to interesting results. Applications of automatic clustering in several areas and their potential as a communication, documentation and design tools for E-R diagrams and object oriented models are described and discussed.

Simulation models help to understand how individual interactions can lead to selforganization of large, moving polarized schools of fish. To some extend the underlying mechanisms in these models are still hypothetical. This paper investigates and confirms previously published results and suggests an alternative model. Previous models of fish schools used the assumption that individuals modify their swimming direction and speed as a reaction to a small fixed number of other individuals swimming closest to their own swimming direction (front priority). They also used discrete transitions between different reaction types to their neighbours (see Huth and Wissel, this volume). These models are able to simulate school movement in a homogeneous environment but fail under certain heterogeneous conditions (e.g. when schools meet obstacles) and do not adequately simulate the formation process of schools. We present an alternative model, in which a fish's new speed and swimming direction is influenced by all visible neighbours. Each neighbour contributes a vector component weighted according to its distance. These components are aggregated to determine to what extent the different behavioural modes of searching, attraction, parallel orientation and repulsion contribute to a modification of an individual's movement in a particular situation. The resulting model reproduces schooling behaviour, organization of schools and has fewer artificial requirements concerning a biological interpretation of the underlying mechanisms. It shows how a comparison of different modelling approaches, empirical observation of inter-organismic interaction, and physiological research can stimulate each other in order to understand a complex, dynamic phenomenon.

Citizen science projects are based on gathering data from citizens. Citizen science projects start from understanding what type of data is needed and from whom. This can lead to creating a conceptual model for the project. Citizen science projects often use web interfaces and creating the interfaces require specific tools or programming knowledge. Having a method for creating the interface from a conceptual model would increase project development speed. This paper tackles the presented idea by using simple steps to create a web interface from an object-oriented conceptual model using XML transformation language XSLT. The model is transformed into a text-based representation using XSD that is then turned into an XML template. Finally, XSLT is used to generate a web interface by transforming the XML file. Results show that the process from object-oriented model to XML can be automated and the programming required for a working web interface is minimal but without other programming languages, the functionality is lacking. At the end of this article, some design suggestions are given to increase the functionalities while maintaining a low amount of programming.

Functional programming is a technique for expressing the constructions and constructs of computer software. This technique treats calculations similarly to the calculation functions in mathematics. Therefore concepts of semantic-states and changeable data are avoided. It may be defined as a declarative technique of programming meaning that programs are mainly expressions. An efficient programming style for systems is asynchronous programming which manages communications with system environment. Asynchronous programming is based on the idea of non-blocking execution of commands and keeping list of tasks in buffers for latter executions. The alternative style to asynchronous programming is to wait for the completion of long commands which leads to programs-execution problems. This paper introduces a robust framework for asynchronous operations on a functional object-oriented model for programming. Up to our knowledge, this is the first technique of its type. The presented model includes syntax for the language constructs and their (operational) semantics. The semantics is meant to serve as a formal background for the construction of theoretical analyses for the presented programming model. The paper presents also a programming example for the proposed model.

The article is dedicated to development of an objectoriented model of an intelligence system based on case-based reasoning (CBR). An upgrade of the decision tree has been introduced to represent the situations hierarchy and related decisions in the knowledge base. The construction of the situations tree has been described. The problem of representing the situations tree in terms of classes and objects has been solved and the method of storage of the situations tree in the database has been defined. As a result, on the basis of the object-oriented paradigm the proposed approach allows creating domain-independent CBR systems that are shells for filling with case-oriented knowledge to solve specific problems.

Ho Ionic manufacturing is a new paradigm for manufacturing introduced recently. This article reports on the development of a 'holonic CNC controller', an ongoing research activity of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Various concepts such as device driver and task-driven discrete instructions have been introduced to fulfil specific requirements of holonic systems: e.g. self-diagnostic and self-repair. An object-oriented model is used to represent the execution of the concepts mentioned above. The execution methodology of those objects is also discussed in this article. The application currently works on a Windows 16-bit platform.

An object-oriented data model for multiple representation of object semantics

This paper proposes the ''poly-aspect data model,'' which is an extension of the object-oriented data model. The purpose of the poly-aspect data model is to represent in a natural way the multimedia data in the database. One of the features of the multimedia data is the diversified representation of the entities of the real world. In the poly-aspect data model, the entity is interpreted as an object, and a model is provided so that multiple complete representations are given to the object. Such an object is called the poly-aspect object. In the poly-aspect data model, an object may have more than one instance as its representation. The class defines the format of the instance. The multiple instance of the same object are distinguished by the class names. When the attributes of multiple instances are defined by the same superclass, those attributes are interpreted to have the same semantics. The same value is shared among the instances, and the consistency is retained. As a realization example of the poly-aspect object, the architecture of the ''Sarah'' database management system, which is currently being constructed experimentally is described.
