Development of a thermal power plant simulation tool based on object orientation

This study presents a new dynamic simulation tool that facilitates plant and control system design of thermal power plants. In order to provide flexibility in building plant and control systems, object-oriented modelling techniques are used to model individual plant components, and each component object model is based on the verified first principles model. Further, simulation models can be easily built by connecting individual component object models, similar to the procedure adopted in an actual plant, by using a user-friendly graphical user interface. This tool enables the design engineer to build a simulation model, execute the simulation during the design process, test an actual plant control system, and adjust the control parameters. It is a useful design tool that accelerates and enhances the plant and control system design process.

For economic reasons aircraft performance is pushed towards its physical limitations. As far as flight control is concerned, a thorough investigation of flight system dynamics is required, i.e., covering the inter action between flight dynamics (including airframe structural flexibility) and flight systems (consisting of actuators/motivators and controls). Computational handling of this interaction is best taken into account if a comprehensive simulation model is available within a common computer processable description. This paper describes the computational model building of such a multidisciplinary non-linear aircraft simulation model for the design and validation of flight control systems. The approach has been validated in several projects and is demonstrated in this contribution by various views on a common example. The object-oriented, equation-based software package Dymola is used as the modelling environment. (C) Elsevier, Paris.

An integrated modelling approach for complex applications and distributed information systems

Nowadays, co-operation is one of the main fields of interest in many domains dealing with information and data representation and treatment (databases, information systems, knowledge bases, production management, etc.). This paper presents an approach and some principles to model the co-operation in complex applications and information systems development. This co-operation is realised by splitting a complex application to some sub-applications each of which is specified using an object-oriented method. The novelty of the approach is mainly the use of a unification model from which the co-operation and integration process is started. The need of a framework for the co-operation in the field of modelling is absolute mainly because of new applications complexity and the variety of data they model, use and share. A cognitive semantics for the association construct

The unified modelling language (UML), besides its traditional use in describing software artifacts, is increasingly being used for conceptual modelling, the activity of describing an application domain. For models to be clear and unambiguous, every construct of the modelling language must have well-defined semantics, which is its mapping to elements of the semantic domain. When used for conceptual modelling, the semantic domain of UML is the application domain, as perceived by the modeller. Modellers perceive and structure their perceptions using cognitive concepts. This paper proposes a mapping of the UML association construct to those concepts. Implications for the use of the association construct for conceptual modelling are derived, a UML profile for conceptual modelling is presented, along with the results of a case study using the semantics and profile.

Earlier semantic and formal analyses of whole–part (WP) relationships in object-oriented models have led to a framework, which distinguishes between primary, consequential, secondary and dependent characteristics of WP relationships. This paper interprets, validates and elaborates on that framework using an existing ontological theory and an associated formal model of objects. The revised framework confirms most of the original characteristics and suggests a number of additions and modifications. The analysis also grounds the characteristics in the framework and thereby suggests more precise definitions for some of them.

This paper emphasizes the importance of integrating outlet discharge and observed internal variables in the evaluation of distributed hydrological models outputs. It proposes a general methodology for a diagnostic evaluation of a complex distributed hydrological model, based on discharge data at the outlet and additional distributed information such as water level and surface soil moisture data. The proposed methodology is illustrated using the PUMMA model in the Mercier sub-catchment (6.6 km(2)). Model parameters are specified according to field data and a previous study performed in a neighbouring catchment (Jankowfsky et al., 2014), without calibration. The distributed water level and soil moisture network of sensors were useful in the model evaluation process. Thus, model parameters are specified either using in situ information or results from previous studies. A stepwise approach is used for model evaluation. It includes standard water balance assessment as well as comparison of observed and simulated outlet discharge, whether on annual or event timescales. Soil moisture sensors are used to assess the ability of the model to simulate seasonal water storage dynamics based on a normalized index. The water level sensors network is used on two timescales: on a seasonal timescale, sensors network is used to assess the model's ability to simulate intermittency;whereas on event timescales, sensors network is used in determining the model's ability to reproduce observed reaction as well as response times. Event timescales do also focus on the correlation between hydrological response and either rainfall event or antecedent soil moisture variables. Results show that the non-calibrated model is quite effective at capturing water flow and soil water-storage dynamics, but it fails to reproduce observed runoff volume during events. During the last two decades, many companies have made large investments in the development and implementation of production planning and control systems. However, only a few of these systems developed or installed have actually been used in practice, and even fewer have made a significant impact on manufacturing industries. Systems, after being implemented, often remain in use for only for a limited time. Effective modelling is one of the most important and difficult steps in the development of reliable information systems and production planning and control in industry is very difficult. This paper presents an object-oriented analysis (OOA) and describes the design of a model for production planning and control in a customised industrial environment. The proposed model was designed for the development of innovative industrial software for the optimum management of production planning in a wide range of business areas.

This manuscript presents a "quasi-3D" modelling approach for the thermo-hydraulic simulation of airflows. The approach is tailored to low velocity motion fields, thus suited for building rooms, household refrigerator cavities, and so forth. Its goal is to somehow bridge the gap between fully mixed volumes, often too inaccurate for system-level studies, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFDs) models, that for the same purpose are frequently too demanding from the computational standpoint. The proposed approach allows to conduct informative and scalable-detail studies, including relevant facts such as air movers', heaters' and sensors' positioning, without resorting to co-simulation, to the advantage of engineering efficiency. Specialization and inheritance are well-known concepts in the area of object-oriented modelling and knowledge representation. However, certain aspects of these concepts lack formal foundations. In particular, when properties of different classes are semantically related, several different semantics are possible for the inherited properties, and a choice is necessary. Conventional systems impose an a priori solution that supports only one of the possible semantics of inheritance. In this paper, we present constructs that allow to differentiate between the possible semantics of inheritance, in a formal and sound way. Our approach is based on a structured view of the real world and a model for its representation. By necessity, the model only partly represents the real world. Thus, reasoning in the model is done with reference to the real world. We introduce restriction isa, a form of specialization that represents property restriction, and demonstrate that it can be a useful conceptual modelling mechanism. We employ restriction isa to formally define property inheritance. Reasoning in our model is done through a number of inference rules that reflect real world constraints. These rules allow for sound derivations both at the instance and scheme levels. At the schema level, in particular, these rules allow us to relate inherited properties to other properties through restriction-isa and isa relations. An object-oriented hierarchical case representation of automotive panels in a computer-aided process planning system

Case-based reasoning (CBR) has a promising application prospect in computer-aided process planning (CAPP) for automotive panels. How to effectively represent and organize the abundant information in the cases has a crucial impact on the effectiveness of case retrieval and adaptation. This paper presents an object-oriented hierarchical case representation scheme for automotive panels in process planning. The scheme is based on an extended object model and case object model which are extensions of the object model in object-oriented modelling technology. Information in cases is divided into three kinds and each kind is represented by different kinds of classes. Accordingly the representation scheme has four layers and different kinds of classes have different functionalities. A car fender case is presented as an example.
