Supporting software development through declaratively codified programming patterns

In current-day software development, programmers often use programming patterns to clarify their intents and to increase the understandability of their programs. Unfortunately, most software development environments do not adequately support the declaration and use of such patterns. To explicitly codify these patterns, we adopt a declarative meta programming approach. In this approach, we reify the structure of a (object-oriented) program in terms of logic clauses. We declare programming patterns as logic rules on top of these clauses. By querying the logic system, these rules allow us to check, enforce and search for occurrences of certain patterns in the software. As such, the programming patterns become an active part of the software development and maintenance environment. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Resource sharing for replicated synchronous groupware

We describe problems associated with accessing data resources external to the application, which we term externalities, in replicated synchronous collaborative applications. Accessing externalities such as files, databases, network connections, environment variables, and the system clock is not as straightforward in replicated collaborative software as in single-user applications or centralized collaborative systems. We describe ad hoc solutions that add to development cost and complexity because the developer must program different behavior for different replicas. We introduce a novel general approach to accessing externalities uniformly in a replicated collaborative system. The approach uses a semireplicated architecture where the actual externality resides at a single location and is accessed via replicated proxies. This approach allows developers of replicated synchronous groupware to 1) use similar externality access mechanisms as in traditional single-user applications, and 2) program all replicas to execute the same behavior. We describe a general design for proxied access to read-only, write-only, and read-write externalities and discuss the tradeoffs of this semireplicated approach over full, literal replication and the class of applications to which this approach can be successfully applied. We also describe details of a prototype implementation of this approach within a replicated collaboration-transparency system, called Flexible JAMM (Java Applets Made Multiuser).

Development of an object-oriented finite element program:: application to metal-forming and impact simulations

During the last 50 years, the development of better numerical methods and more powerful computers has been a major enterprise for the scientific community. In the same time, the finite element method has become a widely used tool for researchers and engineers. Recent advances in computational software have made possible to solve more physical and complex problems such as coupled problems, nonlinearities, high strain and high-strain rate problems. In this field, an accurate analysis of large deformation inelastic problems occurring in metal-forming or impact simulations is extremely important as a consequence of high amount of plastic flow. In this presentation, the object-oriented implementation, using the C++ language, of an explicit finite element code called DynELA is presented. The object-oriented programming (OOP) leads to better-structured codes for the finite element method and facilitates the development, the maintainability and the expandability of such codes. The most significant advantage of COP is in the modeling of complex physical systems such as deformation processing where the overall complex problem is partitioned in individual sub-problems based on physical, mathematical or geometric reasoning. We first focus on the advantages of OOP for the development of scientific programs. Specific aspects of OOP, such as the inheritance mechanism, the operators overload procedure or the use of template classes are detailed. Then we present the approach used for the development of our finite element code through the presentation of the kinematics, conservative and constitutive laws and their respective implementation in C++. Finally, the efficiency and accuracy of our finite element program are investigated using a number of benchmark tests relative to metal forming and impact simulations. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Parallel irregular software for wave propagation simulation

The objective of the European project STORMS (software tools for the optimization of resources in mobile systems) is to develop a software tool to be used for the design and the planning of the future universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS). In this context the ParFlow method permits the simulation of outdoor radio wave propagation in urban environment, modelling the physical system in terms of the motion of fictitious microscopic particles over a lattice. This paper gives an overview of the ParFlow method, and reports the design and the implementation of ParFlow++, an object-oriented irregular parallel software for urban outdoor radio wave propagation prediction. Effects of incorporating special methods into cohesion measurement on class instantiation reuse-proneness prediction

The previously proposed class cohesion measures employ different approaches to assess the strength of the relations between the attributes and methods in a class. Access methods, constructors and destructors are special types of methods with special characteristics that can falsely alter the class cohesion measurement. In this study, the authors empirically explored the impact of considering special methods (SPs) on the cohesion measures' abilities to predict the classes that can be intensively reused via instantiation (IRI). They considered classes in the JHotDraw and Eclipse systems. For each class, they obtained cohesion results using 17 measures in four different scenarios of considering or ignoring SPs. They collected the instantiation reusability data and applied a statistical technique to build a prediction model using each measure in each considered scenario. They investigated the significance of the changes in the prediction results. The authors' results demonstrated that cohesion had a negative impact on class instantiation reuse-proneness and that SPs had significant impacts on cohesion values and the abilities of the cohesion measures to predict IRI classes. In practice, when applying cohesion measures to predict IRI classes, the results suggest that SPs must be included in cohesion measurement.

Exploiting Dynamic Information in IDEs Improves Speed and Correctness of Software Maintenance Tasks

Modern IDEs such as Eclipse offer static views of the source code, but such views ignore information about the runtime behavior of software systems. Since typical object-oriented systems make heavy use of polymorphism and dynamic binding, static views will miss key information about the runtime architecture. In this paper, we present an approach to gather and integrate dynamic information in the Eclipse IDE with the goal of better supporting typical software maintenance activities. By means of a controlled experiment with 30 professional developers, we show that for typical software maintenance tasks, integrating dynamic information into the Eclipse IDE yields a significant 17.5 percent decrease of time spent while significantly increasing the correctness of the solutions by 33.5 percent. We also provide a comprehensive performance evaluation of our approach.

It integrates agent-oriented programming, KQML and basic mobile techniques to support intelligent behaviors, software interoperatablity and code transportability. A research C# compiler

C# is the new flagship language in the Microsoft NET platform. C# is an attractive vehicle for language design research not only because it shares many characteristics with Java, the current language of choice for such research, but also because it is likely to see wide use. Language research needs a large investment in infrastructure, even for relatively small studies. This paper describes a new C# compiler designed specifically to provide that infrastructure. The overall design is deceptively simple. The parser is generated automatically from a possibly ambiguous grammar, accepts C# source, perhaps with new features, and produces an abstract syntax tree, or AST. Subsequent phases-dubbed visitors-traverse the AST, perhaps modifying it, annotating it or emitting output, and pass it along to the next visitor. Visitors are specified entirely at compilation time and are loaded dynamically as needed. There is no fixed set of visitors, and visitors are completely unconstrained. Some visitors perform traditional compilation phases, but the more interesting ones do code analysis, emit non-traditional data such as XML, and display data structures for debugging. Indeed, most usage to date has been for tools, not for language design experiments. Such experiments use source-to-source transformations or extend existing visitors to handle new language features. These approaches are illustrated by adding a statement that switches on a type instead of a value, which can be implemented in a few hundred lines. INTEGRATING MULTIPLE PARADIGMS WITHIN THE BLACKBOARD FRAMEWORK

While early knowledge-based systems suffered the frequent criticism of having little relevance to the real world, an increasing number of current applications deal with complex, real-world problems. Due to the complexity of real-world situations, no one general software technique can produce adequate results in different problem domains, and artificial intelligence usually needs to be integrated with conventional paradigms for efficient solutions. The complexity and diversity of real-world applications have also forced the researchers in the AI field to focus more on the integration of diverse knowledge representation and reasoning techniques for solving challenging, real-world problems. Our development environment, BEST (Blackboard-based Expert Systems Toolkit), is aimed to provide the ability to produce large-scale, evolvable, heterogeneous intelligent systems. BEST incorporates the best of multiple programming paradigms in order to avoid restricting users to a single way of expressing either knowledge or data. It combines rule-based programming, object-oriented programming, logic programming, procedural programming and blackboard modelling in a single architecture for knowledge engineering, so that the user can tailor a style of programming to his application, using any or arbitrary combinations of methods to provide a complete solution. The deep integration of all these techniques yields a toolkit more effective even for a specific single application than any technique in isolation or collections of multiple techniques less fully integrated. Within the basic, knowledge-based programming paradigm, BEST offers a multiparadigm language for representing complex knowledge, including incomplete and uncertain knowledge. Applying a reusable framework for software selection

With increasing use of component-based development (CBD), the process for selecting software from repositories is a critical concern for quality systems development. As support for developers blending in-house and third party software, the context-driven component evaluation (CdCE) process provides a three-phase approach to software selection: filtering to a short list, functional evaluation and ranking. The process was developed through iterative experimentation on real-world data. CdCE has tool support to generate classifier models, shortlists and test cases as artefacts that provide for a repeatable, transparent process that can be reused as the system evolves. Although developed for software component selection, the CdCE process framework can be easily modified for other selection tasks by substituting templates, tools, evaluation criteria and/or repositories. In this article the authors describe the CdCE process and its development, the CdCE framework as a reusable pattern for software selection and provide a case study where the process is applied.
