The dynamic phenomena in pneumatic conveying are investigated by the object-oriented simulation (OOS) method, which is discrete. deterministic and transient for the particulate phase. The fluid phase is considered by a pseudo bidirectional way, separated from the solid phase. The dynamic effects between the two phases are considered by bidirectional terms such as the drag force on the particles and the momentum generation in the fluid. The proposed model regards the effects of bidirectional coupling and tridimensional movement of the particles. Furthermore, collisions among particles are considered, which provide complex dynamic patterns. The object-oriented properties of the model enable it to deal with polydispersed mixtures, making it adequate for segregation studies in pneumatic transport. It is pointed out that the model investigated could be enlarged to include the effects of heat and mass transport. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

object-oriented simulation of coral competition in a coral reef community

A 3-dimensional individual-based model, the ReefModel, was developed to simulate the dynamical structure of coral reef community using object-oriented techniques and Smalltalk/V language. Interactions among six functional groups of reef organisms: tabular coral, foliaceous coral, massive coral, macroalga, corallivorous gastropod and herbivorous fish were examined. Results from the simulation of interaction among the three coral groups are presented here. The behaviours of the coral groups were described with simple mechanistic rules that were derived from their general behaviours (e.g. growing habits, competitive mechanisms) observed in natural coral reef communities. All corals were allowed to grow in a 3-dimensional spatial environment. The model was implemented to explore the competitive mechanisms governing coral community structure. simulation results suggest that a fast-growing habit with overtopping competitive mechanism is probably the most effective strategy for corals to gain spatial dominance in a coral community under stable environmental conditions. In addition, multimodality exists in the final states of individual coral group as a result of small random spatial events that occurred during the early stages of interactions among the corals in the community. This suggests that alternative stable states may exist in a coral community as a result of inter-specific coral competition. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Endex calcium looping is a novel early-stage technology for separating CO2 from flue gases that shows great potential for reducing the high cost of the regeneration step because the calcination temperature is significantly lower. In this work an Endex calcium looping system is modelled as a train of continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) elements mass-coupled in series and thermally coupled in parallel. A novel simulator was developed that incorporates object-oriented design to describe the Endex reactor and its components, and used to study the effects of varying the most important design and operating parameters. From a reactor design point of view, varying the heat transfer coefficient and the sorbent flow rate amounts to testing the classic tradeoff between capital and running costs: we may choose between higher capital costs (larger heat transfer coefficient) and lower running costs (low sorbent flow rate) or vice versa, for similar scrubbing and regeneration efficiencies. object-oriented simulation is an excellent tool while treating models of complex systems. The model can be decomposed into several submodels and the structure of the simulation program can be similar to the structure of the real system. In this article the problem of simulation and control of a set of interconnected induction motors is considered. Models of such kind can be useful while working on central problems for complex mechanisms driven by multiple motors, such as belt or chain conveyers or some transport facilities. In particular, an application of the simulation system PASION(TM) is described. Possible applications of the model in control problems related to the system stability and performance are pointed out.

An object-oriented simulation modelling environment, AgvTalk, is presented to provide flexible modelling capabilities for the simulation of many alternative automated guided vehicle (AGV) systems. The hierarchical features and modularity of AgvTalk create possibilities for the extension and reuse of simulation object components. The detailed behaviour of each object in the AGV system can also be modelled easily and exactly in AgvTalk because there are no limiting modelling constructs. The modelling capabilities of AgvTalk are demonstrated by designing and simulating a conceptually different configuration AGV system, known as the tandem configuration. For the tandem and conventional AGV systems, the characteristics and design methodology in AgvTalk are described. simulations between the two systems are compared using AgvTalk in a job shop environment.

Fuzzy multi-criteria selection of object-oriented simulation software for production system analysis

Discrete event computer simulation is one of the most widely used modeling tools for production systems. object-oriented programming is revolutionizing computer simulation software packages. A fuzzy set approach for multi-criteria selection of object-oriented simulation software for analysis of production system is developed in this paper. The approach uses fuzzy set theory and algebraic operations of fuzzy numbers to characterize simulation software so that the strength and weakness of each alternative can be compared. The linguistic input from experts and decision makers are fuzzified and the results of the fuzzy inference are translated back to linguistic explanation. Further, by aggregating decision maker's preference (weighting) to the expert's rating, a single number for each candidate software can be obtained. One can use this number as an index to choose the most suitable simulation software for the specific application. A comparison between evaluations using simple triangular fuzzy numbers and using the real fuzzy set are presented. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Supply chain reengineering using a core process analysis matrix and object-oriented simulation

To satisfy and respond quickly to customers' demand, many companies are now aggressively focusing on supply chain management in order to strengthen their competitiveness. This paper proposes an integrated business process reengineering (BPR) framework for improving performance. There are several steps in this framework: creating vision, identifying core processes to be redesigned, analyzing current core processes, designing for innovation, evaluating the new processes, selecting the best, and transforming and implementing the resulting design. A core process analysis matrix is proposed for identifying the critical processes. System simulation is useful in measuring the performance and predicting the effect of change on the system. To reduce the risk of BPR, an object-oriented simulation framework is developed for evaluating and analyzing the reengineering proposals. This paper uses a case study to show the value of the method. An object-oriented simulation framework for real-time control of automated flexible manufacturing systems

This paper describes an object-oriented simulation approach for the design of a flexable, manufacturing system that allows the implementation of control logic during the system design phase. The object-oriented design approach is built around the formal theory of supervisory control based on Finite Automata. The formalism is used to capture inter-object relationships that are difficult to identify in the object-oriented design approach. The system resources are modeled as object classes based on the events that have to be monitored for real-time control. Real-time control issues including deadlock resolution, resource failures in various modes of operation and recovery from failures while sustaining desirable logical system properties are integrated into the logical design for simulating the supervisory controller. AN object-oriented simulation ENVIRONMENT FOR AIRBASE LOGISTICS

The subject of this paper, the Integrated Model Development Environment (IMDE), addresses basic difficulties experienced in simulating airbase logistics. These difficulties arise during two major modeling activities: 1) developing the conceptual model, and 2) translating the conceptual model to a particular simulation software implementation. The difficulty of the former activity is largely irreducible, a consequence of the inherent complexity of large, dynamic, and uncertain military systems such as airbase logistics. However, while the latter activity is also complex, key technologies have the potential to simplify this part of the modeling process. This paper discusses how a synergistic combination of object-oriented programming and data bases, graphical programming, software environments, and powerful computer workstations can provide significant enhancements to simulation modeling capabilities. In addition, the paper presents the object-oriented decomposition of the airbase logistics domain as it is implemented in IMDE. The paper also discusses how the IMDE design meets the needs of airbase logistics modelers with widely differing capabilities and mission requirements. This is accomplished by providing different modeling "levels", each with its own user interface, skill requirements and degree of access to modeling tools. The paper concludes with a description of the current status of this large scale research and development effort.

An emulator is a computer program that mimics the behavior of a production facility as seen by the control program. Emulation has been used as a tool for dynamic, off-line testing of control software for automated manufacturing systems. However, research efforts in emulation have focused mainly on controllers for equipment, AGVS, and workstations. This research focuses on emulation for testing shop control software. Though conceptually simple, emulator development efforts tend to be ad hoc in nature and lack a strong conceptual framework. Currently, the effort involved in developing an emulation model may outweigh the potential benefits. The approach used in this research centers around adapting a detailed simulation model, i.e., used for testing control strategies, for emulation, i.e., control software testing. This approach promotes software reuse and thus limits the emulation development task. Due to the limitations of conventional simulation languages and modeling techniques, a simulation model is not readily adapted for emulation. The main problems lie in turning off the control logic in a simulation and interfacing the model to the actual controller. An object-oriented modeling methodology was developed for systematically transitioning from simulation to emulation. Basically, the method calls for encapsulating manufacturing control logic into controller objects and modeling the system from the perspective of exchange of messages among controllers. The developed method also promotes the rapid development of a driver for verification and validation of the emulation model. A prototype system was developed to demonstrate the feasibility of the emulation development method. The MODSIM II language for object-oriented simulation was used to implement the object classes. The second issue addressed is the ability to use emulation to test shop control system in faster-than-real-time (FRT) mode.
