A high fidelity, reliable and extensible real-time CDU simulation system is built on the basis of self-made membrane keyboard and object-oriented simulation method in this paper to improve the visual feelings and simulation fidelity of CDU in flight management system research. Based on embedded PC104 CPU and 8255 programmable peripheral equipment interface card, the membrane keyboard hardware circuit and the keyboard code scanning program are designed. Accordingly, the confused logical problem of keystokes is solved and meanwhile, the emulation CDU keyboard is realized. And then, an extensible and reliable CDU pages system is constructed utilizing object-oriented simulation technique, inheritance and polymorphism mechanisms. Thus, the tiresome generation and management problem of pages system is tackled. simulation experiments illustrate that routing data and performance parameters can be input and displayed realistically on the CDU system developed in this paper.

Semi-automatic parallelization of object-oriented simulations

An approach is introduced for semi-automatic parallelization of object-oriented simulations. The basic idea is to prepare parallelization at the earliest possible stage in the life-cycle of the creation of new simulations (i.e. at modeling), thus minimizing causality conflicts at run-time. The object-oriented model of a simulation is enriched by hints, describing the estimated load and communication costs between major classes and objects. This helps to grasp the inherent parallelism of the model. Based on this additional information, a partitioning with minimal communication between partitions can be generated automatically. Remaining dependency-conflicts must be resolved at run-time. The GoSim [A. Stopper, GoSim, ein Ansatz zur Beschleunigung diskreter, objektorientierter, verteilter simulationen, Ph.D. Thesis, Institute of Informatics, University Klagenfurt, 1997] simulation system is presented, which implements the described proposal and provides semi-automatic parallelization of large-scale and/or high-performance simulations. It provides a description language, a partitioning tool, a program-skeleton generator and a simulation engine. Some measurements prove the usability of the approach. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. A software architecture for the virtual construction of structures

In addition to being a tedious procedure, the complexity of structural construction makes the task of manually generating simulation models quite complicated. The paucity of simulation expertise in the construction industry exacerbates the problem. This research addresses the issue through the development of a generic system architecture that would facilitate the creation of automated model generators for structural construction. The architecture is based on the object-oriented programming paradigm, which supports the use of modularity and hierarchy in the software development process. The generic system architecture developed in this research was used to create an automated model generator for automatically generating and executing a simulation model for the construction of an earth-filled embankment. The simulation results obtained were compared with those obtained through the execution of a manually generated simulation model. A trace obtained from the execution of the automatically generated simulation model was also studied. Both the comparison and the trace tests conducted demonstrated the satisfactory functioning of the automated model generator. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the event-based modeling formalism a system is modeled by defining the changes that occur at event times and the system dynamics can be described using an 'Event Graph'. An event graph model is a network of event nodes describing the events that take place in the system and the relationships among these events. In the paper we extend the Event Graph framework by proposing an event-graph modeling formalism suitable to represent discrete event simulation models developed through the object-oriented approach, named object-oriented Event Graph (OOEG). The importance of object-oriented simulation is recently growing under the Industry 4.0 paradigm, in which optimization via simulation, real-time simulation, automatic decisions systems based on simulation, on line scenario analysis play a relevant role. The OOEG representation provides the same compactness of the EG representation. The advantage of the OOEG representation is that allows supporting a modelling methodology where systems are described by linking components analogously as the system components are linked, and the dynamic of the systems can be visualized in terms of interactions between objects, which have their physical correspondence in the real world.

Development and testing of an object-oriented model for adaptively managing human disturbance of least tern (Sternula antillarum) nesting habitat

Botany Bay Plantation Wildlife Management Area is one of only four known natural nesting sites for least terns (Sternula antillarum) on the South Carolina coast, and more than 20,000 people visit the 3-mile stretch of beach each nesting season since it opened to the public in 2008. We developed a simulation model for the adaptive management of human disturbance on nesting habitat for least terns, which is described using the ODD (Overview, Design Concepts, and Details) protocol. The simulation uses the Questions and Decisions (QnD) system framework, an object-oriented modeling approach that emphasizes interactions among key ecological and social components. The model is designed to explore the potential results of management actions and identify key indicators for future monitoring. Initial model parameters were developed from existing literature, expert opinion and on-site ecological observations as few baseline data were available for the recently opened site. In addition, substantial uncertainty surrounded the nesting behavior of least terns related to productivity levels, responses to human disturbance, and overwash tides. In order to test model assumptions and performance, parameters are assigned stochastic probability distributions made explicit to wildlife managers and can be updated as additional monitoring data become available. simulation results suggest that Botany Bay colonies are at significant risk of collapse. Monte Carlo simulations of the model (n=500) show that current management practices result in a median productivity of 0.08 fledglings per breeding adult, well below the minimum productivity threshold of 0.13 needed to encourage site fidelity. But closing one particular section of beach during the nesting season would result in a global median productivity of 0.26. UWSim: A Simulator for Underwater Sensor Networks

We present a new simulator for Underwater Sensor Networks (UWSN), named UWSim. Most of the currently available simulators focus greatly on ground-based sensor and ad hoc networks;they do not consider the factors that affect the underwater communication. UWSim, on the other hand, has its focus on handling scenarios specific to UWSN environments. For example, communication between nodes in UWSN must take place at very low frequencies, which a UWSN simulator can achieve. The actual software development was carried out in a purely object-oriented fashion using C# capabilities. The development was highly modularized and was based on object-oriented design methodologies. An illustrative example is provided to show how this simulator can be used to generate useful data characteristic of UWSN environments. Currently, UWSim has support for limited number of functionalities and it calls for further extensions to support a wide range of UWSN simulation exercises.

A methodology for defining building evacuation routes

This paper concerns an innovative methodology aimed towards specifying the best set of evacuation routes in a given scenario-where a scenario is characterised by the enclosure geometry, the population's capabilities and the population distribution within the building. The best set of evacuation routes is assumed to be the one which minimises the movement time of the last evacuee. The problem faced is an optimisation problem where the cost function to be minimised is the last evacuee's movement time and the research space is defined by all the possible sets of evacuation routes in the given scenario. As this cost function could be a multipeak function and since the research space is discrete and extremely large, a random search algorithm has been adopted. Given a set of evacuation routes, the proposed methodology models the evacuation over time with the aim of finding the movement time of the last evacuee. The modelling of the evacuation over time has to obey two criteria. First, as it is embedded in the optimisation process and it has to be repeated a very high number of times ( potentially for each possible set of evacuation routes), the computational cost is a critical issue: therefore the model has to be 'synthetic' and microscopic models result not suitable. Secondly, the model cannot neglect flight behaviour and crowd crushes: therefore the need for a Dynamic Network Loading model which allows to keep track of the location of moving queues in the network, to predict spillbacks and dissipation and to model capacity drop due to clogging effects as well. The overall model has been implemented in an object-oriented simulator that allows analysis of large multifloor buildings. The simulator has been applied to an illustrative problem of evaluating the best set of evacuation routes for a school: the application results are reported in the paper. Military communications networks are large complex systems;their physical dynamics, composition, workload characteristics and operational goals make them very hard to model and analyse. It is particularly difficult to build a generalized model that can adequately fit each instance, generate a workload that exercises the network in a realistic way, and measure network effectiveness in terms of the operational goals. In this work, we describe our approach to building such a model for the US Marine Corps, and demonstrate the model's use by solving a particular equipment allocation problem. We combine object-oriented simulation with new concepts for workload modelling and measuring effectiveness that are based on the operational tasks the Marines perform.

Netsim:: Java™-based simulation for the World Wide Web

Current literature motivates development of a general, WWW-based simulation package with maximum user interactivity and cross-platform capabilities. Netsim, a general, WWW-based, discrete-event simulation package written entirely in Java, meets this need. Java is an object-oriented programming language designed for internet programming. It makes Netsim possible and enables easy incorporation with existing WWW materials. As a result, Netsim supports and enhances the existing WWW environment for users of all levels. Netsim provides complete model creation and modification capabilities, through the event graph paradigm, along with both graphical animation and data output. Simulating the construction of structures - an automated approach

simulation research in construction has been focussed mainly on the modelling of construction processes. However, most construction projects involve the building of structures with complex dependencies and structural relationships among its component parts. Manually generating simulation models of such structures is extremely difficult. The problem is exacerbated in a field like construction due to the paucity of simulation expertise. This paper presents a method for circumventing the problem through the development of an intuitive and structured approach for the automated generation of simulation models using the object-oriented programming paradigm. The approach was implemented using MODSIM II and tested using a two-component structure with intra-component and sequential inter-component dependencies. The simulation outputs were compared with that of a manually generated simulation model. The implementation was further tested using a 12-component structure with intra-component, sequential inter-component and continuous partial concurrent dependencies. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
