In this paper we discuss a new approach to Performance Engineering called the object-oriented Performance Engineering Approach (OOPEA). OOPEA is an innovative approach to performance modeling, simulation and design where an object-oriented performance analysis model, a discrete-event simulation model and an operational model are integrated into a modeling framework. We emphasize simulation in this paper and present a case study on the UICCELL II (University of Illnois at Chicago CeELLular II switching system), a software simulator of a cellular phone system. The system can be divided into three main components: the Mobile Switching Center, Base Site, and Mobile Telephone Unit, which have client-server relationships and communicate with each other using IPC-facilities, via message passing. The UICCELL II is implemented in a distributed environment on SUN SPARC 1 and 10 workstations using an Ethernet LAN. simulation is used to examine the dynamic behavior of the system, and helps to capture the performance constraints, mainly the contention for resources.

Generic simulation model for hybrid flow-shop

In this paper, we propose a generic simulation model for Hybrid Flow-Shop (HFS) where the job priorities at each machine stage are established dynamically. Based on an object-oriented conceptual model of the HFS system class, an initial dynamic simulation prototype was developed using the Simula language and the external class GPSSS (GPSS under Simula). In order to help the industrial managers an HFS dedicated simulator in Delphi 2 under Windows 95 operating system has been realized. The main goal of the simulator is to facilitate the performance evaluation of different priority rules for job dispatching concerning the mean flow time and makespan as well as other performance criteria like average resource utilization, average queue length... A simulation experiment was made to investigate the performance of four priority rules. The performed tests concern 13 systems. The results of 52 simulation runs demonstrate that the SPT dispatching rule yielded superior performance for the makespan criteria for the most of tests. However, it has also been found that for Some tests clear superiority of a particular priority rule has not been established. Thus the HFS simulator proposed can help managers to schedule hybrid flow shops efficiently to achieve various corporate objectives. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

IRENE_DLL (integrated Resources for Evaluating Numerical Estimates-Dynamic Link Library) is a Microsoft (MS) COM (component object model) class library providing a set of routines designed to facilitate the implementation of model evaluation techniques. Statistical procedures (difference-based analysis, correlation-regression analysis, probability distributions, pattern analysis, statistics aggregation, and time mismatch analysis) are applied to allow comparing estimates against measurements, either individually taken or replicated. The dynamic link library (DLL) can be easily interfaced with applications developed under a MS Windows programming language. An essential description of the program is given along with the basic concepts of usage.

In this paper, we derive an object-oriented parallel algorithm for three-dimensional isopycnal flow simulations. The matrix formulation is central to the algorithm. It enables us to apply an efficient preconditioned conjugate gradient linear solver for the global system of equations, and leads naturally to an object-oriented data structure design and parallel implementation. We discuss as well, in less detail, a similar algorithm based on the reduced system, suitable also for parallel computation. Favorable performances are observed on test problems. This contribution presents development and trends of simulation software, from the simple structures for 'static' explicit ODE models to modelling of structural dynamic systems with DAEs. simulation emerged in the 1960' in order to be able to analyse nonlinear dynamic system and to synthesize nonlinear control systems. Since that time simulation as problem solving tool has been developed towards the third pillar of science (beneath theory and experiment), and simultaneously simulation software has been developed further on. The paper first follows roots in the CSSL standard for simulation languages, from simple ODE modelling structures to discrete elements in ODE modelling, using the classical state space approach. Next, the extensions from explicit state space description to implicit model descriptions and their consequences for numerical algorithms and for structure of simulators are discussed, like DAE solvers and implicit model translation. Besides DAE modelling, state event description and state event handling has become a key feature for simulators sketched by a state event classification and options for implementation. In the following, the last major steps of the development are presented: a-causal physical modelling, the new Modelica standard for ODE and DAE modelling, state chart and structural dynamic systems. Physical modelling and Modelica is outlined by examples, and for structural dynamic systems a new approach by means of internal and external events is presented - together comfortable state chart descriptions based on UML-RT. The last section reviews state-of-the-art simulators for availability of extended and structural features necessary for these last developments: DAE modelling, a ausal physical modelling, state events, Modelica modelling, stale chart modelling, structural decomposition for structural dynamic systems, and related features. At the end, a table summarises and compares the availability of structural approaches and features.

Proposed and developed is a service composition framework for decision-making under Uncertainty, which is applicable to stochastic optimization of supply chains. Also developed is a library of modeling components which include Scenario, Random Environment, and Stochastic Service. Service models are classes in the Java programming language extended with decision variables, assertions, and business objective constructs. The constructor of a stochastic service formulates a recourse stochastic program and finds the optimal instantiation of real values into the service initial and corrective decision variables leading to the optimal business objective. The optimization is not done by repeated simulation runs, but rather by automatic compilation of the simulation model in Java into a mathematical programming model in AMPL and solving it using an external solver.

Hybrid modelling framework for synthesizing virtual structures

Erecting a structure in a construction project involves the use of a number of complex, interacting processes. Systematic analysis of these processes is essential for ensuring that they are executed in the most efficient way possible. However, traditional tools like CPM and PERT and other analytical and mathematical approaches cannot capture the dynamics of construction processes. These problems could be overcome by conducting experiments on the real-world processes themselves but such experiments can be prohibitively expensive. Thus, a more feasible approach that can overcome these drawbacks is required. This paper presents a framework-based approach for facilitating the analyses of the operations required for the construction of a structure with a specific configuration by building the structure virtually in a digital computer using discrete-event simulation. The approach utilizes a hybrid framework that combines the flexibility and simplicity of semantic networks with the power of object-orientation to facilitate discrete-event simulation. A predominantly product-centric modelling approach is used in the development of the framework. A sample application is given illustrating the application of the framework-based approach for the analyses of the operations required for the construction of the structure. © 2000 Taylor & Francis Ltd.

In this paper, Aximetric proposes a decentralized Command and Control (C2) architecture for a distributed control of a cluster of on-board health monitoring and software enabled control systems called SimBOX that will use some of the real-time infrastructure (RTI) functionality from the current military real-time simulation architecture. The uniqueness of the approach is to provide a "plug and play environment" for various system components that run at various data rates (Hz) and the ability to replicate or transfer C2 operations to various subsystems in a scalable manner. This is possible by providing a communication bus called "Distributed Shared Data Bus" and a distributed computing environment used to scale the control needs by providing a self-contained computing, data logging and control function module that can be rapidly reconfigured to perform different functions. This kind of software-enabled control is very much needed to meet the needs of future aerospace command and control functions.

The paper presents the realization of an object-oriented kernel of a new modeling and simulation environment. The kernel system stands out as it is based on systems theoretical concepts and facilitates combined discrete-continuous, modular, hierarchical modeling. Its implementation language is the AI language Common Lisp and its object-oriented superset CLOS. The kernel system serves as the basis for a knowledge-based modeling and simulation environment supporting interactive modeling and simulation and automatic model construction. © 1993 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Runway incursions are defined by ICAO as "events that create an incorrect presence of aircrafts, vehicles or persons in airport restricted areas of take-off and landing". In the Italian National Agency for Flight Safety Report (2001) it can be read: "Runway incursions are defined as one of the highest actual risks of aerial transportation in many airports all over the world. The situation is no more acceptable and it's necessary to apply all the possible countermeasures with the commitment of public and private institutions and operators to solve the problem". In fact, even if the most serious accidents are very rare (with a probability of about 1/10(7) movements), their consequences can be catastrophic. The target of the research is to build a simulation model of ground circulation of aircrafts in aerodromes to evaluate frequencies of occurrence of incursions and the connection of the events to set an analysis on parameters as visibility, technological infrastructures and tower controls. The airport "G.B. Pastine" of Ciampino is presented as a case study, identifying actual status and opportune evolutions.
