An object-oriented software life cycle of an intelligent tutoring system

This paper describes the application of an object-oriented model of life cycle in the development of an intelligent tutoring system for secondary students in the domain of algebraic powers. The system is called EasyMath and has been developed using the Rational Unified Process, which is an object-oriented process proposed for use with the Unified Modelling Language. The Rational Unified Process supports multiple recursions of the phases of the software life cycle. This has been enriched to include empirical studies and formative evaluations appropriate for knowledge-based educational software.

fit soft-ware industrial practice, the high cost of maintenance process of large-scale software has put emphasis on the need to manage the maintainability in earlier phases of a software lifecycle. This paper discusses the applicability of architectural complexity measures to managing the complexity in the maintenance phase and the reliability of the maintenance process. It also discusses the theoretical validity of the architectural complexity measures, as has been established using PVS, a formal verification system.

In this research paper, an approach to fully automating the generation of test data for object-oriented programs fulfilling dataflow-based testing criteria and the subsequent evaluation of its fault-detection capability are presented. The underlying aim of the generation is twofold: to achieve a given dataflow coverage measure and to minimize the effort to reach this goal in terms of the number of test cases required. In order to solve the inherent conflict of this task, hybrid self-adaptive and multi-objective evolutionary algorithms are adopted. Our approach comprises the following steps: a preliminary activity provides support for the automatic instrumentation of source code in order to record the relevant dataflow information. Based on the insight gained hereby, test data sets are continuously enhanced towards the goals mentioned above. Afterwards, the generated test set is evaluated by means of mutation testing. Progress achieved so far in our ongoing project will be described in this paper.

Despite the importance of software metrics and the large number of proposed metrics, they have not been widely applied in industry yet. One reason might be that, for most metrics, the range of expected values, i.e., reference values are not known. This paper presents results of a study on the structure of a large collection of open-source programs developed in Java, of varying sizes and from different application domains. The aim of this work is the definition of thresholds for a set of object-oriented software metrics, namely: LCOM, DIT, coupling factor, afferent couplings, number of public methods, and number of public fields. We carried out an experiment to evaluate the practical use of the proposed thresholds. The results of this evaluation indicate that the proposed thresholds can support the identification of classes which violate design principles, as well as the identification of well-designed classes. The method used in this study to derive software metrics thresholds can be applied to other software metrics in order to find their reference values. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

software systems shall evolve to fulfill users' increasingly various and sophisticated needs. As they become larger and more complex, the corresponding testing and maintenance have become a practical research challenge. In this paper, we employ an approach that can identify the change-proneness in the source code of new object-oriented software releases and predict the corresponding change sizes. We first define two metrics, namely Class Change Metric and Change Size Metric, to describe the features and sizes of code changes. A new software release may be based on several previous releases. Thus, we employ an Entropy Weight Method to calculate the best window size for determining the number of previous releases to use in the prediction of change-proneness in the new release. Based on a series of change evolution matrices, a code change prediction approach is proposed based on the Gauss Process Regression (GPR) algorithm. Experiments are conducted on 17 software systems collected from GitHub to evaluate our prediction approach. The results show that our approach outperforms three existing state-of-the-art approaches with significantly higher prediction accuracy.

The increase of the software complexity makes how to understand software systems a hard work. Since you cannot control what you cannot measure, many research works have been done on software metrics. But one key property has always been neglect, i.e., the topological properties of software systems. In this paper, we proposed to analyze object-oriented (OO) software systems from the perspective of software topological property. First, OO software systems are represented by network at method and class level, respectively. Then we introduce complex network theory to analyze the topological properties of these networks. A case study on an open source OO software system, JHotDraw 5.1, gives an illustration of our approach. Our approach can give further understanding of OO software systems.

software quality measurement at an early stage helps in improving the product and process of the development. A good-quality software product is easy to maintain. Maintainability of software refers to the ease with which software can be understood, repaired, and improved. The longevity of software depends on the ability of developers to meet new customer requirements and address the problems faced by them. software maintenance is the most expensive phase of development and consumes more than half of the development budget. This work is carried out to find the early factors of object-oriented software (OOS) that help developers to refine the quality. The proposed model predicts two major attributes of maintainability, namely understandability and modifiability, ofOOSthroughUMLclass diagrams on the basis of size and structural complexity metrics. The model is validated by establishing a high correlationwith the existing predictionmodel for both the factors. In comparison with an existing model, the proposed model gives a correlation of 0.9603 and 0.9424 for understandability and modifiability, respectively.

software size estimation at the early analysis phase of software development lifecycle is crucial for predicting the associated effort and cost. Analysis phase captures the functionality addressed in the software to be developed in object-oriented software development life-cycle. Unified modeling language captures the functionality of the software at the analysis phase based on use case model. This paper proposes a new method named as use case model function point to estimate the size of the object-oriented software at the analysis phase itself. While this approach is based on use case model, it also adapts the function point analysis technique to use case model. The various features such as actors, use cases, relationship, external reference, flows, and messages are extracted from use case model. Eleven rules have been derived as guidelines to identify the use case model components. The function point analysis components are appropriately mapped to use case model components and the complexity based on the weightage is specified to calculate use case model function point. This proposed size estimation approach has been evaluated with the object-oriented software developed in our software engineering laboratory to assess its ability to predict the developmental size. The results are empirically analysed based on statistical correlation for substantiating the proposed estimation method.

software maintainability is one of the most important aspects when evaluating the quality of a software product. It is defined as the ease with which the existing software can be modified. In the literature, several researchers have proposed a large number of models to measure and predict maintainability throughout different phases of the software Development Life Cycle. However, only a few attempts have been made for conducting a comparative study of the existent proposed prediction models. In this paper, we present a detailed classification and conduct a comparative analysis of object-oriented software maintainability prediction models. Furthermore, we considered the aforementioned proposed models from three perspectives, which are architecture, design and code levels. To the best of our knowledge, such an analysis that comprises the three levels has not been conducted in previous research. Moreover, this study hints at certain fundamental basics concerning the way of how measure the maintainability knowing that at each level the maintainability will be measured differently. In addition, we will focus on the strengths and weaknesses of these models. Consequently, the comparative study yields that several statistical and machine learning techniques have been employed for software maintainability prediction at code level during the last decade, and each technique possesses its specific characteristic to develop an accurate prediction model. At the design level, the majority of the prediction models measured maintainability according to the characteristics of the quality models. Whereas at the architectural level, the techniques adopted are still limited and only a few of studies have been conducted in this regard.

software reliability is one of the important attributions of dependable systems. A number of software reliability models have been developed by now, but few of them take object-oriented features into account. Nowadays, more and more software systems are developed in object-oriented technology and object-oriented programming languages contain new language features, most notably inheritance, polymorphism, and dynamic binding which have a strong impact on the reliability of software. In this paper, we propose an accurate model for object-oriented software reliability estimation. The central idea of the strategies proposed is to incorporate the influence factors of complexity of the software under test and the test effectiveness into the objectoriented software reliability model so as to make the software reliability model more adequate and accurate to the real situation for object-oriented software. Results from substantial experiments have shown the rationality and usefulness of the new model.
