An artificial intelligence approach to course timetabling

Course Timetabling is a complex problem that cannot be dealt with by using only a few general principles. The various actors (the administrator, the chairman, the instructor and the student) have their own objectives, and these objectives usually conflict. The complexity of the relationships among time slots, classes, classrooms, and instructors makes it difficult to achieve a feasible solution. In this article, we propose an artificial intelligence approach that integrates expert systems and constraint programming to implement a course timetabling system. Expert systems are utilized to incorporate knowledge into the timetabling system and to provide a reasoning capability for knowledge deduction. Separating out the knowledge base, the facts, and the inference engine in expert systems provides greater flexibility in supporting changes. The constraint hierarchy and the constraint network are utilized to capture hard and soft constraints and to reason about constraints by using constraint satisfaction and relaxation techniques. In addition, object-oriented software engineering is applied to improve the development and maintenance of the course timetabling system. A course timetabling system in the Department of Computer Science and Information engineering at the National Changhua University of Education (NCUE) is used as an illustrative example of the proposed approach.

Implementing, validating, modifying, or reengineering an object-oriented system requires an understanding of the object and class interactions which occur as a program executes. This work seeks to identify, visualize, and analyze interactions in object-oriented program executions as a means for examining and understanding dynamic behavior. We have discovered recurring interaction scenarios in program executions that can be used as abstractions in the understanding process, and have developed a means for identifying these interaction patterns. Our visualizations focus on supporting design recovery, validation, and reengineering tasks, and can be applied to both object-oriented and procedural programs.

This paper presents a methodology and a tool to support test selection from regression test suites based on change analysis in object-oriented designs. We assume that designs are represented using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and we propose a formal mapping between design changes and a classification of regression test cases, i.e., three categories: Reusable, Retestable, and Obsolete. We provide evidence of the feasibility of the methodology and its usefulness by using our prototype tool on an industrial case study.

A majority of modern software is constructed using languages that compute by producing side-effects such as reading/writing from/to files, throwing exceptions, acquiring locks, etc. To understand a piece of software, e.g. a class, it is important for a developer to understand its side-effects. Similarly, to replace a class with another, it is important to understand whether the replacement is a safe substitution for the former in terms of its behavior, a property known as substitutability, because mismatch may lead to bugs. The problem is especially severe for superclass-subclass pairs since at runtime an instance of the subclass may be used in the client code where a superclass is mentioned. Despite the importance of this property, we do not yet know whether substitutability w.r.t. effects between subclass and superclass is preserved in the wild, and if not what sorts of substitutability violations are common and what is the impact of such violations. This paper conducts a large scale study on over 20 million Java classes, in order to compare the effects of the methods of subclasses and superclasses in practice. Our comprehensive study considers the exception, synchronization, I/O, and method call effects. It reveals that in pairs with effects, only 8-24% have the same effects, and 31-56% of submethods have more effects, and the effects of a large percentage of submethods cannot be inferred from the supermethod.

object-oriented software engineering must address new issues during system evolution, namely the effects of class evolution on existing class methods. A Class Dictionary Graph describes the class structure and relationships of a given domain. A Propagation Pattern defines object behavior by describing responsibilities among a group of collaborating classes. The behavior described in a Propagation Pattern is mapped onto the class structure defined in a Class Dictionary Graph, and the appropriate C++ code is generated. Class structures evolve in many ways. This paper details the effects of class evolution on the object behavior defined in existing Propagation Patterns, and describes the requirements for adapting Propagation Patterns during class evolution, as compared to the efforts of maintaining C++ code.

During the development of object-oriented software system;huge amount of software-development data especially change-history is stored in software-repositories. This change-history can be mined to measure the quality of the software systems. In this paper, we present change-history based package-changeability measures namely;a) Package Change-Proximity, b) Change-Coupling Index and c) Package-Changeability. These measures are defined and computed on the basis of change-coupling among packages. A case study has been performed and findings derived from the results are discussed. Our results show that these package-changeability measures can be very helpful for development team to predict and quantify the change-coupling among packages. (C) 2015 The Authors. The Agent-Rule-Class framework for Multi-Agent Systems

Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) have become increasingly mature, but this maturity does not make the traditional object oriented (OO) approaches obsolete. On the contrary, building MAS in combination with OO constructs allows the reuse of existing components. Similarly, OO methodologies can benefit from extension towards an agent abstraction and so make use of the methods and tools for MAS. The Agent-Rule-Class (ARC) framework is proposed as an approach that builds agents upon traditional OO system components and makes use of business rules to dictate agent behaviours, aided by the OO components. By modelling agent knowledge in business rules, the proposed paradigm provides a straightforward means to develop agent-oriented systems based on the existing object-oriented systems and offers features that are otherwise difficult to achieve in OO systems. A Structural Model and a Behavioural Model are the central components in the ARC framework for agent-oriented system modelling. A supporting tool has been developed to ensure that agents implement up-to-date requirements from business people, reflecting desired current behaviours, without the need for frequent system rebuilds. The ARC framework provides a complete MAS development process supported by a new process model more suited to collaboration between OO developers, Agent oriented (AO) developers and domain experts. The main outcome of using ARC is better adaptivity. The ARC framework is illustrated with a rail track example.

A number of strategies have been proposed for state-based class testing. An important proposal made by Chow, that was subsequently adapted by Binder, consists in deriving test sequences covering all round-trip paths in a finite state machine (FSMs). Based on a number of (rather strong) assumptions, and for traditional FSMs, it can be demonstrated that all operation and transfer errors in the implementation can be uncovered. Through experimentation, this paper investigates this strategy when used in the context of UML statecharts. Basecton a set of mutation operators proposed for object-oriented code we seed a significant number of faults in an implementation of a specific container class. We then investigate the effectiveness of four test teams at uncovering faults, based on the round-trip path strategy, and analyze the faults that seem to be difficult to detect. Our main conclusion is that the round-trip path strategy is reasonably effective at detecting faults (87% average as opposed to 69% for size-equivalent, random test cases) but that a significant number of faults can only exhibit a high detection probability by augmenting the round-trip strategy with a traditional black-box strategy such as category-partition testing. This increases the number of test cases to run and therefore the cost of testing- and a cost-benefit analysis weighting the increase of testing effort and the likely gain in fault detection is necessary.

This paper studies Service-oriented software engineering paradigm in general analysis. Service-oriented software engineering (SOSE) is a software engineering paradigm for building and developing distributed applications. There are many advantages in terms of SOSE as it facilitates the loose coupling feature. The paper provides a comparison between object-oriented software engineering and SOSE, advantages and challenges of using SOSE, some of the most known methodologies exist to develop this paradigm, existing modeling notations and also how SOSE is used within real applications.
