As dynamic changing conditions prevail in the manufacturing environment, the design of production scheduling system, especially scheduling algorithm in the system, is difficult. In order to meet the complex and changeable requirements of production scheduling problem and fit the specific features of production scheduling system, a reusable scheme with multi-agent technique and Dual-Service-Bus is adopted which has been proven very efficient for dealing with the complex systems.

The special requirements for the modeling of PDMsystem-extendible organization, modularized structureand cooperation between the front stage and the backstage are introduced. The objects PDM system refersto-products, projects, documents, personnel andworkflow, etc-and their attributes and functions areanalyzed. Based on object-oriented technique, theattributes, data, processes and functions of these objectsare packed in the corresponding classes. Composed ofthese classes, the model of PDM system is set up. Withthe techniques of encapsulation and inheritance ofclasses, the requirements of modularization andextendibility are met; with the user interface and thecontrol of the workflow class, the cooperation betweenthe front stage and the back stage is also met.

We propose object-oriented design of software structures for both automating analytical processes and managing the data generated from these processes. For automation and data management, we develop two models for building the programs used in these two areas. We describe the advantages of these object-oriented models over traditional design. Thus, standardization, scalability, and independence of the programs are assured by object-oriented modeling. Characteristics such as inheritance, polymorphism, and encapsulation are used to achieve the goals of automation and data management, as well as providing a new way of representing analytical concepts in automation and data management. This paper presents the methodology used in the development of an object-oriented optimal power flow program. The optimal power flow problem is modeled as a class inherited from a load flow class and has direct access to a main power system object class. Each power system component, such as generators, transformers, transmission lines, loads, and capacitor banks, is modeled as an object and pro-structured in the same way as in a real electrical network. The OPF problem is formulated using a quasi-Newton method iterated with the Newton-Raphson load flow module. A special matrix class is used to handle all the system matrices where input and output data can communicate with the OPF computing modules via an object-oriented graphical user interface and through an object-oriented database. The tests carried out on the IEEE 30-bus and the IEEE 118-bus systems showed that the proposed program is as fast as the one based on a conventional programming language.

An agile production scheduling system is developed using the notion which combines the multi-agent paradigm and the holonic manufacturing concept. A system framework with several "holonic-agents" is described firstly to show how the two paradigms are amalgamated. Then the distributed ruler based mechanism is proposed to coordinate behaviors of these holonic-agents in order to realize a predictable and nearly optimal scheduling with agility and adaptability. The object-oriented and COBRA based technique is also discussed briefly to construct a prototype system for the presented approach. Satisfactory conclusions are drawn from experiments and shortly analysis about them is given at the end of the paper.

Employing multiple views to separate large-scale software systems

In order to achieve a well-separated system structure including hiding of information on a need-to-know basis it is highly desirable to provide multiple views of an interface for different subjects. In this context subjects may be structural parts of the system such as classes, or, preferably, architectural entities like clusters, subsystems or application areas. Establishing a view of an interface means that a particular subject may only use a selected subset of it, if at all. In this article several approaches cited in the literature are discussed in the light of the demands made by large-scale commercially installed software systems. It is shown that these approaches in large systems either lead to a considerable performance degradation or to a software structure which is somewhat difficult to survey and which does not possess satisfactory extensibility. The proposed technique neither reduces the performance of the system nor encumbers the existing software structure nor does it unnecessarily increase development and maintenance costs. It lies on the organizational level and is applied during the production process of a subject entity. The approach is flexible in that it does not depend on the actual notions of subjects and suppliers of interfaces in a software system. Metaclasses are introduced for establishing the respective views of a server class for different subjects. They are deduced from the server classes by the developers by tailoring the set of usable public operations and are collected in include libraries or description files which are specific to every subject. By analogy, different views of a global function can be introduced. The proposed technique permits to use several implementation languages and programming paradigms within a system in parallel, and proved to be well applicable in a large commercially established software system helping to reduce the coupling dependencies between different components. This paper presents an object-oriented architecture, called the Model-View-Shape (MVS) architecture, for constructing an Integrated Visual Programming Environment (IVPE), whose constituent tools deal with (fine-grained) language semantics, as well as a mass of graphics-drawing activities. This architecture enforces a layered and loosely-coupled structure, so that the user-interface part of components may be more independent, maintainable, and reusable than those proposed in the original model-view-controller architecture. An MVS class hierarchy, systematically constructed using C++, can be reused and extended with new semantics to rapidly develop new tools for an existing IVPE, or even an IVPE supporting more than one language. The present editors developed can be used to construct programs by specifying the associated flow information in explicit (visual) or implicit (textual) ways, while the (incremental) flow analysers can help analyse incomplete program fragments to locate and inform the user of possible errors or anomalies during programming. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

An object-oriented approach for implementing power system restoration package

Due to many unforeseen circumstances that could happen in the today's bulk power system, there is a possibility of a system wide outage. In order to provide aids to the power system dispatchers following a complete collapse of the power system, a prototype package has been developed. Through interactive acid friendly graphic interface, the package suggests a guideline for the dispatcher to restore the power system. With an aim to increase the ease of maintenance, object-oriented technique was adopted to implement the package. The development of the software involved three stages: 1) object oriented analysis, 2) object oriented design, and 3) integration and testing. In this paper, the structure and the development procedure of the prototype system are presented.

This paper investigates the applicability of the object-oriented technique to large and complex systems as exemplified by the operating system BS2000 which has been under constant development for a number of years. The proposed system architecture ensures the harmonious co-existence of procedural and object-oriented parts of the system. New domains, which are implemented using the object-oriented paradigm, can be smoothly embedded in the existing system. The parallel usage of different implementation languages is rendered economically viable. In our framework some representative parts of the system were redesigned and implemented in a prototype. The extensibility of the design was checked by including further parts into this scheme. The results are encouraging, so that the object-oriented technique will be used in the further development process. The proposed technique can also be applied to systems with a different structure, even a monolithic one.
