A generic watermarking model for object relational databases

object-relational databases have been implemented largely and thus, there is urgent need to protect them from potential misuse. Digital watermarking is considered as technological protection measure that deters the attempts to plagiarize or distort databases. Prior work focused primarily on protection of relational databases by digital watermarking. However, object-relational databases seem to have escaped the attention of researchers. In this research work, we propose the framework for a novel, generic watermarking technique for ORDBs with a view to incorporate Ownership and Integrity protection. The software developed on the basis of this model is called WORD - Watermarking object relational databases. To the best of our knowledge, this is for the first time that a complete model for watermarking ORDBs has been developed. To deal with changing security aspects with time, strategy pattern is adopted while implementing the watermarking model WORD. The use of strategy pattern designs incorporates flexibility and scalability in our model. Robustness and integrity of proposed system has been proved theoretically as well as practically by various experiments.

Classical normalisation theory has a number of lacunas although it is commonly and widely accepted and it is the basis for database theory since the 80ies. Most textbooks and monographs still follow this approach despite the good number of open problems. Today, modern object-relational DBMS offer far better capabilities than the systems that have been built in the past based on the strict relational paradigm. Constraint maintenance has been oriented on transformation of structures to structures that are free of functional dependencies beside key constraints. The maintenance of coherence constraints such as two-type inclusion constraints has been neglected although this maintenance might be the most expensive one. In reality normalisation is local optimisation that exclusively considers functional dependency maintenance. We thus need a different normalisation approach. This paper develops an approach towards optimisation of schemata and global normalisation. This approach results in a denormalisation and object-relational database schemata.

Increasingly, resources are "born digital" and their associated formats are short-lived. Subsequently, the development of environments to preserve such digital content over the very long-term (50 years or more) has become a critical issue. To date, however, the preservation of data as contained in object-relational databases has been widely overlooked. Here, the task is inherently complicated by the nature of the data (relational as well as multimedia). Furthermore, the internal structure of the database and the associated applications need to be preserved as it evolves over time. This paper presents an environment to preserve object-relational databases over a very long period of time. We show that our environment is able to host and access multiple databases as they evolve over time. ©2010 IEEE.

To solve the problems of shaving and reusing information in the information system, a rules-based ontology constructing approach from object-relational databases is proposed. A 3-tuple ontology constructing model is proposed first. Then, four types of ontology constructing rules including class, property, property characteristics, and property restrictions ave formalized according to the model. Experiment results described in Web ontology language prove that our proposed approach is feasible for applying in the semantic objects project of semantic computing laboratory in UC Irvine. Our approach reduces about twenty percent constructing time compared with the ontology construction from relational databases.

A rules driven ontology learning approach from object-relational databases (ORDB) is proposed in this paper. The method extracts ontology from the object-relational databases based on the Semanticobjects (SO) platform. And the core of this method aims at proposing a set of rules to obtain the basic elements which Web ontology language (OWL) needs. Based on the rules, the RDOL model is proposed. The model is driven by the rules to generate ontology Our proposed approach reduces about forty-two percent learning time and obtains about eighteen percent higher performance comparing to the ontology learning from relational databases (RDB).

With the development of remote sensing technology, getting the image data more and more, how to apply and manage the mass image data safely and efficiently has become an urgent problem to be solved. According to the methods and characteristics of the mass remote sensing image data management and application, this paper puts forward to a new method that takes Oracle Call Interface and Oracle InterMedia to store the image data, and then takes this component to realize the system function modules. Finally, it successfully takes the VC and Oracle InterMedia component to realize the image data storage and management.

Where model-driven approaches are used in Information Systems development, as well as transforming models into application code, an important and often overlooked aspect is the transformation into storage schemas for persistent data. relational database schemas are still being used but these might not be the best quality solutions for persistent data. object-relational database management systems (ORDBMS) can store persistent data using structures that have more in common with object-oriented application code structures. Seamless transformations may have the quality that is desirable for model-driven approaches. In this paper we demonstrate the advantages of seamless transformations. We show object-relational structures that contribute to seamlessness and the implications for model-driven approaches such as Model-Driven Engineering.

Database management has undergone more than four decades of evolution producing vast range of research and extensive array of technology solutions. The database research community and software industry has responded to numerous challenges resulting from changes in user requirements and opportunities presented by hardware advances. The relational database approach as represented by SQL databases has been particularly successful and one of the most durable paradigms in computing. Most recent database challenges include internet-scale databases - databases that manage hundreds of millions of users and cloud databases that use novel techniques for managing massive amounts of data. In this paper we review the evolution of database management systems over the last four decades and then focus on the most recent database developments discussing research and implementation challenges presented by modern database applications.

Designing nesting structures of user-defined types in object-relational data bases

This paper presents a methodology for designing proper nesting structures of user-defined types in object-relational databases. Briefly, we envision that users model a real-world application by using the EER model, which results in ail EER schema. Our algorithm then uses the theory we developed for nested relations to generate scheme trees from the EER schema. We shall prove that the resulting scheme trees have exactly the same information content as the EER schema, and the scheme-tree instances over the resulting scheme trees do not store information redundantly. Finally, the scheme trees are transformed to Oracle Database 10g nested object types for implementation. The algorithm in this paper forms the core of a computerized object-relational database design tool we shall develop in the future. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Selecting optimal instantiations of data models- Theory and validation of an ex ante approach

The schema of an information system can significantly impact the ability of end users to efficiently and effectively retrieve the information they need. Obtaining quickly the appropriate data increases the likelihood that an organization will make good decisions and respond adeptly to challenges. This research presents and validates a methodology for evaluating, ex ante, the relative desirability of alternative instantiations of a model of data. In contrast to prior research, each instantiation is based on a different formal theory. This research theorizes that the instantiation that yields the lowest weighted average query complexity for a representative sample of information requests is the most desirable instantiation for end-user queries. The theory was validated by an experiment that compared end-user performance using an instantiation of a data structure based on the relational model of data with performance using the corresponding instantiation of the data structure based on the object-relational model of data. Complexity was measured using three different Halstead metrics: program length, difficulty, and effort. For a representative sample of queries, the average complexity using each instantiation was calculated. As theorized, end users querying the instantiation with the lower average complexity made fewer semantic errors, i.e., were more effective at composing queries. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
