Bistatic spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) which uses a separated transmitter and receiver has been studied intensively due to its flexibility. To reconstruct the image for the bistatic SAR in the parallel track configuration, where the transmitter and the receiver have equal velocity, we modify the omega-k algorithm. Specifically, using the extended Taylor approximation (ETA), we convert the parallel track configuration into the single track configuration. Then, using the principle of the stationary phase, we propose an analytical method to increase the image quality of bistatic SAR systems.

For flexibility and cost reduction, the forward-looking bistatic spotlight synthetic aperture radar (FL-BSSAR) which uses the side-looking transmitter and the forward-looking receiver has been studied recently. For the FL-BSSAR imaging, we introduce a modified omega-k algorithm. Specifically, using rotation and shifting of the receiver path and resampling of the transmitter path, we convert the FL-BSSAR into the side-looking BSSAR. Then, we modify the matched filter and Stolt interpolation using the principle of the stationary phase to obtain the SAR image. Simulation results show that the modified omega-k algorithm enhances the image quality.

Since the spaceborne spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has the long slant range and the high altitude, it generates the curved flight path due to the orbit curvature effect and the time delay due to the long round-trip time of the chirp pulse. Thus, to obtain the SAR image with high quality, we extend the omega-k algorithm. First, we convert the curved path into the straight-line path based on the resampling and the rotation of the transmitted-pulse path and the received pulse path. Then, using the modified matched filter and the modified Stolt interpolation based on the principle of the stationary phase, we compensate the phase error induced by the start-stop assumption of the omega-k algorithm.

When processing high-resolution spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, the orbit curvature is a key aspect that must be taken into account. The non-hyperbolic range history makes most SAR imaging approaches not suitable for the curved orbit. Based on the two-dimensional spectrum derived by series reversion (SR), a modified omega-k algorithm (OkA) is proposed in this paper. Making use of the reference function calculated by SR, an accurate bulk compression is implemented. Following, a modified Stolt interpolation is applied based on least square (LS), to perform the residual range-variant processing efficiently. The method described can achieve satisfactory focusing results for spaceborne SAR, without a large number of computation. Point targets simulations have validated the presented research.

This paper deals with an omega-k algorithm for focusing bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The key of the proposed algorithm is the derivation of a frequency mapping function by using Neo's method of series reversion. The registration of the focused image onto the ground plane is discussed in detail, which is based on a conclusion that the targets whose instantaneous Doppler frequencies at zero azimuth time are the same as that of the reference target at zero azimuth time will all be focused at the reference target's azimuth position in the focused image. The range invariance region size, which the proposed algorithm can process, is also determined in this paper. The proposed algorithm can handle extreme bistatic configurations with wide apertures and large squint angles. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by simulation results. Although developed for the azimuth-invariant case, the proposed algorithm can be readily extended to the azimuth-variant case, as long as we divide the SAR data into blocks in the azimuth direction so that each block of SAR data can be assumed quasi-stationary in the azimuth direction.

A novel modified omega-k algorithm for circular trajectory scanning SAR imaging using series reversion

This article presents a modified omega-k algorithm for circular trajectory scanning synthetic aperture radar (CTSSAR) imaging. Due to the curvature of circular trajectory, it is difficult to have access to the two-dimensional frequency spectrum for CTSSAR via the principle of stationary phase (POSP), as conventional SAR imaging methods RD and CS. Herein, the analytic point target spectrum is first derived by series reversion and the POSP, based on which a modified omega-k algorithm is developed to focus data accurately. The accuracy can be controlled by keeping enough terms in the two series expansions so that a well-focused image can be achieved with a proper range approximation. After detailed analyses and experiments, the fourth-order approximation is proved to be the best choice. Furthermore, the computational efficiency is evaluated by comparing the given method with the back projection algorithm and other methods with different approximated orders. The proposed algorithm is verified to be the best one in terms of computational burden. A well-focused image is obtained by simulations, validating the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

A novel modified omega-k algorithm for synthetic aperture imaging lidar through the atmosphere

The spatial resolution of a conventional imaging lidar system is constrained by the diffraction limit of the telescope's aperture. The combination of the lidar and synthetic aperture (SA) processing techniques may overcome the diffraction limit and pave the way for a higher resolution air borne or space borne remote sensor. Regarding the lidar transmitting frequency modulation continuous-wave (FMCW) signal, the motion during the transmission of a sweep and the reception of the corresponding echo were expected to be one of the major problems. The given modified omega-k algorithm takes the continuous motion into account, which can compensate for the Doppler shift induced by the continuous motion efficiently and azimuth ambiguity for the low pulse recurrence frequency limited by the tunable laser. And then, simulation of Phase Screen (PS) distorted by atmospheric turbulence following the von karman spectrum by using Fourier Transform is implemented in order to simulate turbulence. Finally, the computer simulation shows the validity of the modified algorithm and if in the turbulence the synthetic aperture length does not exceed the similar coherence length of the atmosphere for SAIL, we can ignore the effect of the turbulence.

A Generalized omega-k algorithm to Process Translationally Variant Bistatic-SAR Data Based on Two-Dimensional Stolt Mapping

In translationally variant (TV) bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BSAR), 2-D spatial variation is a major problem to be tackled. In this paper, a generalized omega-k imaging algorithm to deal with this problem is proposed. The method utilizes a point target reference spectrum of the generalized Loffeld's bistatic formula (LBF) (GLBF). Without the bistatic-deformation term, GLBF is the latest development of LBF. Similar to the monostatic case, it has a much simpler form than other point target reference spectra. Based on the spatial linearization of GLBF, the Stolt mapping relationship is derived. Different from the traditional omega-k algorithms for monostatic SAR and translationally invariant BSAR, this approach uses a 2-D Stolt frequency transformation. Through this transformation, the method can deal with the 2-D spatial variation. It can also consider the linear spatial variation of Doppler parameters, which is usually not considered in the previous publications on bistatic omega-k algorithms. This method can handle the cases of TV-BSAR with different trajectories, different velocities, high squint angles, and large bistatic angles. In addition, a compensation method for the phase error caused by the linearization is discussed. Numerical simulations and experimental data processing verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

An omega-k algorithm for Translational Invariant Bistatic SAR Based on Generalized Loffeld's Bistatic Formula

In this paper, an omega-k imaging algorithm to focus the raw data of translational invariant (TI) bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BSAR) is proposed. The method utilizes a point target reference spectrum of generalized Loffeld's bistatic formula (GLBF). Without the bistatic deformation term, GLBF is the latest development of Loffeld's bistatic formula. It is comparable in precision with the method of series reversion (MSR), but it has a much simpler form than MSR and a similar form to a monostatic case. Based on the spatial linearization of GLBF, the Stolt transformation relationship is derived. The method can consider the linear spatial variation of Doppler parameters, which is always ignored in previous publications about bistatic omega-k algorithms. This method can handle the cases of TI BSAR with high squint angles and large bistatic degrees. In addition, a compensation method for the phase error caused by the linearization is discussed. Numerical simulations and experimental data processing verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
