An increasing interest towards the utilization of open hardware and software platforms for industrial control applications has arisen during the last decade. Some of the most important developed projects are OSACA in Europe, OSEC in Japan and OMAC in the US. All these efforts are directed to the definition of an open architecture for controllers of manufacturing systems. The PC (personal computer) as the control platform facilitates the conectivity, standardization and availability of components, and the cost reduction. An aspect, however, remains scarcely analized: the application of these concepts on equipments designed with a propietary control structure. An open control system for an SCARA industrial robot YAMAHA YK7000 has been developed to analize its viability and evaluate difficulties and limitations. The controller follows the guidelines defined by the OMAC architecture (open Modular architecture for controllers). The control functions were implemented on a dual platform (two PCs): The first PC supports the critical functions. executing the paths planning and axes control tasks with a commercial axes control card. The second one supports the functions of user interfacing with the user and other non-critical time applications. Both computers are connected by a TCP/IP link.

The modular developing method decreases the developing time from the standard of controller architecture to the product.

This paper presents a short overview of the project for bench-top mini milling testbed platform development. Since it is intended to be used for research, as well as educational purposes, a Linux based CNC open architecture control system (OAC) was implemented. The characteristics of chosen OAC solution, test bed structure, and implementation details are briefly depicted. Finally, main conclusions and future research work are summarized.

Most of modern computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools (CNCMTs) use standard G-code (ISO 6983) - based controllers. However, during the generation of G-codes by Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software, several machining information could be lost, which hinder the development of smart interoperable CNCMTs required for modern manufacturing environment. The STEP-NC (STEP compliant Numerical Control), which is a machine-tool control language governed by the ISO 14649 standard, was developed to overcome the G-code programming limitations. Over the last two decades, several research studies attempted to develop a new generation of CNCMTs controllers taking advantage of STEP-NC capabilities. Nevertheless, these controllers are customized for specific applications, complex to replicate, costly, and not yet accepted in the manufacturing industry. In this paper, an easy to replicate, noninvasive, and low-cost interpreted open architecture STEP-NC controller is developed. This controller uses a Single Board Computer which can be directly connected to a commercial lathe. The controller software is developed based on C++ and can interpret a ISO14649 STEP-NC file, generate a toolpath, simulate the toolpath, and communicate with the CNCMT. The developed STEP-NC controller was successfully tested by simulating the toolpath during the machining of a test part available in the ISO standard.

An evaluation space for open architecture controllers

Existing open architecture controllers have different architectures and methods for realization, but none of them have been generally accepted or been widely applied in industry. Moreover, there is little literature that analyzes and compares these different open architecture controllers synthetically. So this paper establishes an evaluation space for open architecture controllers, a new method to analyze and compare the different open architecture controllers. The evaluation space enables the full evaluation of the open architectures and can easily find the controller's advantages and disadvantages. The evaluation space for open architecture controllers is a multidimensional space, whose dimensions can be categorized as the requirement dimensions and the architecture dimensions. The requirement dimensions define different requirements of the open architecture controllers, and the architecture dimensions define the different realization methods of open architecture controllers. Establishing the relationships between the requirement dimensions and the architecture dimensions, the evaluation space can calculate the degree to which the different architectures meet the requirements of open architecture controllers, and then the integrated evaluation of different open architecture controllers can be obtained. Several typical open architecture controllers, such as NGC, OSACA, OMAC and OSEC, are compared based on the evaluation space;some valuable conclusions have been drawn.

Spatial thermal mapping using thermal infrared camera and wireless sensors for error compensation via open architecture controllers

Errors associated with temperature deformation in computer numerically controlled machine elements are of particular concern, especially with multiple sources of heat. The open architecture controller (OAC) offers a way to handle the issue. It has the feature to host several external devices to support full error compensation using various types of sensor that are not conventional in machine tools, such as thermal cameras and wireless temperature sensors in a network. The current paper introduces OAC principles and types as well as innovative techniques including wireless and infrared cameras to acquire spatial temperature on machines. A wide spatial mapping of errors from various sources can be implemented;for example, thermal errors that are difficult to model but could be measured and mapped over the whole machine. The resulting mapped errors are then used for error compensation in a complementary way to other existing techniques. OACs are implemented in recent machine tools to ease the hosting of external devices. This feature helps to improve error compensation, to ease early error detection, and to manage machine failures, with the objective to maintain the machine precision.

Comparison of Three Different open architecture controllers

Since the late 80s there are a growing need of the machine tool builders and the end users to have open architecture controllers. Different levels of openness can be defined analyzing the available research results and products. The main initiatives leading the current research in these efforts are the European OSACA, the American OMAC and the OSEC from Japan. A complex comparison of these projects and their goals and achievements is presented in this paper. It is stated that in their present form it is not possible to merge easily the three results to get a unified and potentially worldwide accepted open architecture controller.

As a key te..hnology in the field of advanced manufacturing, an open architecture controller is studied. In order to develop an open architecture software-CNC system on personal computer （PC） according to open modular architecture controllers （OMAC）. First, the software and hardware platform is chosen and software realization methodology for the CNC system is determined. Second, static modeling methods of an open architecture controller inclusive of object-oriented （OO） programming technology, dynamic link library （DLL） technology and system modules partition are investigated. Third, the dynamical behavioral modeling and the data flow representation of open architecture controller are discussed, which are both described in hierarchy fmite state machine （FSM） model. Fourth, a reusable software module model is established to develop software function module library. Finally, a 3-axis milling machine tool test-bed, named for HIT-CNC, is successfully designed by means of the constructed software function module library and the system configuring method. The experimental results show that, besides increasing the degree of reusability and openness, application of above-mentioned method- ology leads to significant decrease of development time as well as maintenance cost.

Modern computer numerical control (CNC) is intended to be more flexible, interoperable, adoptable, open, and intelligent. In realisation of such a CNC system, an ISO standard known as STEP for numeric control (STEP-NC) or ISO 14649 was developed in 2004 to alleviate a number of challenges associated with the widely used CNC standard (ISO 6983). Implementation of STEP-NC was initially carried out on some commercial CNC systems via an indirect STEP-NC programming approach. However, this approach failed to meet all the requirements of a modern CNC system, due to the translation of data from the high level to low level, which is vendor-specific and machine tool dependent, thus detrimental to the basic resource independent philosophy of STEP-NC. This paper presents a new generation of CNC systems, based on the open architecture Control (OAC) technology supported by STEP-NC data model to fundamentally solve these challenges. The developed system employs a new set of techniques for STEP-NC data interpretation, graphical verification, execution, monitoring, and report generation that supersede the exiting techniques in scope and capability. Using these techniques, the proposed system provides a flexible, intelligent, and adaptable manufacturing platform that can provide unprecedented levels of scalability and resource allocation agility in modern manufacturing enterprises. A prototype implementation of the proposed model is based on STEP-NC interpretation, 3D simulation, machine motion control, and live video monitoring with automatic document generation modules has been used to verify and validate the system in conjunction with industrially inspired test components.
