Data governance activities: an analysis of the literature

Data governance is an emerging subject in the information system (IS) field. In recent years, the volume of data used within organisations has increased dramatically, playing a critical role in business operations. This paper explores the current literature on data governance and is intended to provide a comprehensive analysis of the activities involved in data governance. Six major academic databases in the IS domain were searched using key terms to identify and analyse material reflecting the current state of knowledge. A systematic procedure was developed to identify 31 papers that explicitly mention data governance activities. open coding techniques were applied to conduct content analysis, resulting in 110 data governance activities across five decision domains of the data governance framework. These data governance activities are understood as: 'action' plus 'area of governance' plus 'decision domain' e.g. (define data policies for data quality). Our analysis shows a high volume of data governance activities associated with the 'defining' action of the areas of governance across the decision domains with a lack of reported on the 'implementing' and 'monitoring' actions.

Classroom research in religious education: The potential of grounded theory

Grounded theory is one of the most common qualitative research strategies in social sciences. Currently, many applications of this theory are being developed for religious education. In the article it is argued that grounded theory deserves special attention for classroom research in religious education. For this reason, the basic features (fundamental openness and concurrence of data collection and analysis;constant comparison and asking analytical questions) as well as the coding strategies (open, axial, and selective) of grounded theory will be explained and concretised. An analysis of one example sequence demonstrates how grounded theory may be used to emphasise the communicative and substantive aspects (as well as the interaction between the two) of classroom interaction, therefore lending itself to data analysis. In this manner, grounded theory can also be used for an intensive analysis of a student's learning process, as the authors have done in one student profile analysis, as well as for a comparative analysis of teaching practice in an actual class or even a variety of classes.

Lay involvement in the analysis of qualitative data in health services research: A descriptive study

Background It is recognised that involving lay people in research in a meaningful rather than tokenistic way is both important and challenging. In this paper, we contribute to this debate by describing our experiences of lay involvement in data analysis. Methods We conducted semi-structured interviews with the lay partners and researchers involved in qualitative data analysis in a wider study of inpatient involvement in medication safety. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and coded using open thematic analysis. Results We interviewed three lay partners and the three researchers involved. These interviews demonstrated that the lay members added value to the analysis by bringing their own perspectives;these were systematically integrated into the analysis by the lead researcher to create a synergistic output. Some challenges arose, including difficulties in recruiting a diverse range of members of the public to carry out the role;however there were generally fewer challenges in data analysis than there had been with our previous experience of lay partners’ involvement in data collection. Conclusions Lay members can add value to health services research by being involved in qualitative data analysis. © 2016 The Author(s).

Abstract The presented master thesis deals with the topic of stereotypical presentations of disabled people in Czech newspapers and with its impact on the audience. This topic build on previous findings regarding repetitive stereotypical images and frames of disabled which were not only studied on newspapers. Simultaneously with those reoccurring frames and images we can also find positive of negative labels which are used in connection with disabled in newspapers. The work examines whether these phenomena occur also in Czech online and printed news. Using qualitative content analysis phenomena mentioned above were searched in randomly selected one hundred news. Requirement for choosing articles to selection was that the articles content need to be whole about handicapped people. Precisely, based on previous literature the text were analyzed and it was searched for narrative frames or models, stereotypical frames and labels that could be presented in texts. An Emergent Model of End-users' Acceptance of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems: A Grounded Theory Approach

The success of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation depends, to a large extent, on end-users' acceptance of ERP systems, which in turn affects the intensity and nature of system use. To understand the phenomenon underlying end-users' acceptance of ERP systems, the authors conducted a grounded theory research in a large institution that implemented an ERP system. Through systematic coding and content analysis, the authors inductively derived a theoretical model to explain end-users' acceptance of ERP systems. Three categories-beliefs about the system, changes in job scope, and social influence - emerged from the data as direct antecedents of user acceptance. The data also suggest that "beliefs about the system" mediates the influence of "training and support" and "personal characteristics" on user acceptance, whereas "personal characteristics" moderate the influence of "changes in job scope" on user acceptance. The theoretical model that emerged from this qualitative study extends existing models of user acceptance by providing a more complete understanding of end-users' acceptance of ERP systems.

In this paper, we present a framework that combines automatic and manual approaches to discover themes in disaster-related tweets. As case study, we decided to focus on tweets related to typhoon Haiyan, which caused billions of dollars in damages. We collected tweets from November 2013 to March 2014 and used the local typhoon name "Yolanda" as the filter. Data association was used to expand the tweet set and k-means clustering was then applied. Clusters with high number of instances were subjected to open coding for labeling. The Silhouette indices ranged from 0.27 to 0.50. Analyses reveal that the use of automated Natural Language Processing (NLP) approach has the potential to deal with huge volumes of tweets by clustering frequently occurring words and phrases. This complements the manual approach to surface themes from a more manageable set of tweet pool, allowing for a more nuanced analysis of tweets from a human expert. As application, the themes identified during open coding were used as labels to train a classifier system. Future work could explore on using topic models and focusing on specific content or issues, such as natural calamities and citizen's participation in addressing these.

The topic of this bachelor thesis is existence of autonomy and repression in relations between young delinquent people and society. Thesis is inspired by the control balance theory, one of the sociological criminological concepts of causes of formation of delinquent behavior, defining autonomy as a control which is applied by an individual and repression as a control applied on this individual. The objective of this work is to show a possible insights of how young delinquents perceive and reflect autonomy and repression in their social environments e.g. school and family environment, also in repressive group of their peers. Im also trying to verify, according to control balance theory, whether imbalanced ratio between autonomy and repression experienced by individual is the cause of commiting delicts. Based on analysis of my biogpraphic interviews with four underage patients of diagnostic institute I found patterns describing how delinquents reflect autonomy and repression. The results show that just a complex view on autonomy and repression in lives of delinquents is not sufficient to verify control balance theory, also the fact that the interpretaion of theory is valid only in common with other psychological theories. The bachelor thesis " Facebook, the new generation phenomen" aims to introduce the social network Facebook in the theoretical part and find out what are the reasons people use it. The social networks are introduced in the theoretical part of the bachelor thesis and a special attention is given to the social network Facebook. Secondly, the dangerous phenomena connected with the social networks and cyberspace are mentioned. In the research part interviews, conducted with six respondents who answered questions concerning the activities they take part in on Facebook, were processed using the open coding method. The method of electronic document analysis, based on monitoring their activities on Facebook, was used in order to verify and complete their statements.

This diploma work is dealing with the phenomenon of matrimonial crises. In the introductory chapters of the theoretical part we are defining the main themes of this work - relationship, philosophy of marriage, crises and marital crises. We are concerned with the couples therapy, its history and selected approaches. One chapter is devoted to the developmental approach that gives the possibility to see marital crises as an opportunity to self-knowledge, personality growth or relationship advancement. Practical part is conceived as a qualitative research. Its main goal is to survey and explore marital crises that we observed in clients of marital consulting centre. We would like to offer a more generalized vision of marital crises. We would also answer the questions how does a marital crises looks like and what processes are going on. Theme identification is one of the most fundamental tasks in qualitative research. It also is one of the most mysterious. Explicit descriptions of theme discovery are rarely found in articles and reports, and when they are, they are often relegated to appendices or footnotes. Techniques are shared among small groups of social scientists, but sharing is impeded by disciplinary or epistemological boundaries. The techniques described here are drawn from across epistemological and disciplinary boundaries. They include both observational and manipulative techniques and range from quick word counts to laborious, in-depth, line-by-line scrutiny. Techniques are compared on six dimensions: (1) appropriateness for data types, (2) required labor, (3) required expertise, (4) stage of analysis, (5) number and types of themes to be generated, and (6) issues of reliability and validity. © 2003, SAGE Publications.
