Inner source-Adopting open source development Practices in Organizations A Tutorial

Inner source, the adoption and tailoring of open source development practices in organizations, is receiving increased interest. However, although it offers numerous benefits, many practitioners are unclear about what it is and how to adopt it. When adopting inner source, organizations should consider nine factors pertaining to product, process, and organization. A description of three inner-source initiatives illustrates these nine factors.

An Entropy-Based Metric of Developer Contribution in open source development and Its Application to Fault-Prone Program Analysis

To support successful quality managements of open source software (OSS) projects, this paper proposes to measure the balance of developers’ contributions to a source file as an entropy. Through an analysis of data collected from 10 popular OSS projects, the following trends are reported: a source file is more fault-prone as the developers’ contributions to the file are more imbalanced (lower entropy), and the proposed metric can be useful for predicting fault-prone programs. © the Authors 2018.

open source development, to a great extent, is a type of social movement in which shared ideologies play critical roles. For participants of open source development, ideology determines how they make sense of things, shapes their thoughts, actions, and interactions, enables rich social dynamics in their projects and communities, and hereby realizes profound impacts at both individual and organizational levels. While software engineering researchers have been increasingly recognizing ideology's importance in open source development, the notion of "ideology" has shown significant ambiguity and vagueness, and resulted in theoretical and empirical confusion. In this article, we first examine the historical development of ideology's conceptualization, and its theories in multiple disciplines. Then, we review the extant software engineering literature related to ideology. We further argue the imperatives of developing an empirical theory of ideology in open source development, and propose a research agenda for developing such a theory. How such a theory could be applied is also discussed.

Code quality analysis in open source software development

Proponents of open source style software development claim that better software is produced using this model compared with the traditional closed model. However, there is little empirical evidence. in support of these claims. In this paper, we present the results of a pilot case study aiming: (a) to understand the implications of structural quality;and (b) to figure out the benefits of structural quality analysis of the code delivered by open source style development. To this end, we have measured quality characteristics of 100 applications written for Linux, using a software measurement tool, and compared the results with the industrial standard that is proposed by the tool. Another target of this case study was to investigate the issue of modularity in open source as this characteristic is being considered crucial by the proponents of open source for this type of software development. We have empirically assessed the relationship between the size of the application components and the delivered quality measured through user satisfaction. We have determined that, up to a certain extent, the average component size of an application is negatively related to the user satisfaction for this application.

Mission-critical development with open source software: Lessons learned

Using open source software components in a mission-critical project not only can keep the project within budget but can also result in a more robust and flexible tool. When considering an open source component, prospective users should evaluate the project for several characteristics: maturity, longevity, and flexibility. For greatest benefit, the users should also build and maintain a strong working relationship with the component's developers.

The field of artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving, creating a demand for sophisticated models that rely on substantial data and computational resources for training. However, the high costs associated with training these models have limited accessibility, leading to concerns about transparency, biases, and hidden agendas within AI systems. As AI becomes more integrated into governmental services and the pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) advances, the necessity for transparent and reliable AI models becomes increasingly critical. Decentralized Federated Learning (DFL) offers decentralized approaches to model training while safeguarding data privacy and ensuring resilience against adversarial participants. Nonetheless, guarantees provided are not absolute, and even open weights AI models do not qualify as truly open source. This paper suggests utilizing blockchain technology, smart contracts, and publicly verifiable secret sharing in DFL environments to bolster trust, cooperation, and transparency in model training processes. Our numerical experiments illustrate that the overhead required to offer robust assurances to all peers regarding the correctness of the training process is relatively small. By incorporating these tools, participants can trust that trained models adhere to specified procedures, addressing accountability issues within AI systems and promoting the development of more ethical and dependable applications of artificial intelligence.

Continuously mining distributed version control systems: an empirical study of how Linux uses Git

Distributed version control systems (D-VCSs - such as git and mercurial) and their hosting services (such as Github and Bitbucket) have revolutionalized the way in which developers collaborate by allowing them to freely exchange and integrate code changes in a peer-to-peer fashion. However, this flexibility comes at a price: code changes are hard to track because of the proliferation of code repositories and because developers modify ("rebase") and filter ("cherry-pick") the history of these changes to streamline their integration into the repositories of other developers. As a consequence, researchers and practitioners, who typically only consider the (cleaned up) history in the official project repository, are unaware of important elements and activities in the collaborative software development process. In this paper, we present a method that continuously mines all known D-VCSs of a software project to uncover the complete development history of a project. We use this method to (1) show the divergence between the code development history in the official Linux kernel repository and the complete kernel development history, and (2) to investigate the characteristics of the ecosystem of git repositories of the Linux kernel. Finally, we discuss how continuous mining could be adopted by current D-VCS hosting services.

Energy system modeling: Public transparency, scientific reproducibility, and open development

A mid-2017 survey shows that 28 energy system modeling projects have made public their source code, up from six in 2010, and none in 2000. Another six web-based energy sector database projects and nine hybrid projects were established during this same period, some explicitly to service open modeling. Three distinct yet overlapping drivers can explain this shift in paradigm towards open methods: a desire for improved public transparency, the need for genuine scientific reproducibility, and a nascent experiment to see whether open source development methods can improve academic productivity and quality and perhaps also public trust. The associated source code, datasets, and documentation need suitable open licenses to enable their use, modification, and republication. The choice for software is polarized: teams need only consider maximally permissive (ISC, MIT) or strongly protective (GPLv3) licenses. Selection is influenced by whether code adoption or freedom from capture is uppermost and by the implementation language, distribution architecture, and use of third-party components. Permissive data licenses (CC BY 4.0) are generally favored for datasets to facilitate their recombination and reuse. Official and semi-official energy sector data providers should also prefer permissive licensing for copyrightable material. (C) 2018 The Author. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Understanding reuse of software examples: A case study of prejudice in a community of practice

Context: The context of this research is software developers' perceptions about the use of code examples in professional software development. Objective: The primary objective of this paper is to identify the human factors that dominate example usage among professional software developers, and to provide a theory that explains these factors. Method: To achieve this goal, we analyzed the perceptions of professional software developers as manifested on LinkedIn online community. We analyzed the data qualitatively using adapted grounded theory research procedures. Results: The research yields an initial framework of key factors that dominate professional developers' perception regarding example usage. We use the theoretical lens of prejudice theory to put these factors in a broader context, and outline initial recommendations to address these factors in professional organizational context. Conclusion: The results of this work, in particular the use of qualitative techniques - allowed us to obtain rich insight into key human factors that affect professional software developers, and enrich the body of literature on the issues of reuse. These factors need to be taken into account as part of an organizational reuse strategy. (c) 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Workflow Automation for Cycling Systems

Complex cycling workflows are fundamental to numerical weather prediction (NWP) and related environmental forecasting systems. Large numbers of jobs are executed at regular intervals to process new data and generate new forecasts. Dependence between these forecast cycles creates a single never-ending workflow, but NWP workflow schedulers have traditionally ignored this-at the cost of efficiency when running "off the clock"-by enforcing a simpler nonoverlapping sequence of single-cycle workflows. Cylc ("Silk")(1-3) is designed to manage infinite cycling workflows efficiently even after delays in real-time operation, or in historical runs, when cycles can typically interleave for much-increased throughput. Cylc is not actually specialized to environmental forecasting, however, and cycling workflows may also be useful in other contexts. In this paper, we describe the origins and major features of Cylc, future plans for the project, and our experience of open source development and community engagement.
