opportunistic network coding-Assisted Cloud Offloading in Heterogeneous Fog Radio Access networks

Caching and cloud control are new technologies that were suggested to improve the performance of future wireless networks. Fog radio access networks (F-RANs) have been recently proposed to further improve the throughput of future cellular networks by exploiting these two technologies. In this paper, we study the cloud offloading gains achieved by utilizing F-RANs that admit enhanced remote radio heads (eRRHs) with heterogeneous wireless technologies, namely, LIE and WiFi. This F-RAN architecture thus allows widely proliferating smart phone devices to receive two packets simultaneously from their inbuilt LIE and WiFi interfaces. We first formulate the general cloud base station (CBS) offloading problem as an optimization problem over a dual conflict graph, which is proven to be intractable. Thus, we formulate an online version of the CBS offloading problem in heterogeneous F-RANs as a weighted graph coloring problem and show it is NP-hard. We then devise a novel opportunistic network coding (ONC)-assisted heuristic solution to this problem, which divides it into two subproblems and solves each subproblem independently. We derive lower bounds on the online and aggregate CBS offloading performances of our proposed scheme and analyze its complexity. The simulations quantify the gains achieved by our proposed heterogeneous F-RAN solution compared with the traditional homogeneous F-RAN scheme and the derived lower bounds in terms of both CBS offloading and throughput.

Nowadays, providing reliable broadcast and multicast transmission over wireless networks is still a challenging problem, due to the erratic and time-varying nature of a wireless channel. An efficient retransmission strategy is very important to the reliability of transmission and the bandwidth utility of the wireless network. In this paper, an opportunistic network coding retransmission algorithm based on packet loss pattern is proposed to improve the transmission efficiency of broadcast and multicast over wireless networks. The theoretical analysis reveals the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The simulation results show that the algorithm can effectively reduce the retransmission times and increase the transmission efficiency over wireless networks.

Existing opportunistic network coding architectures (e.g., COPE) rely on pseudobroadcast to deliver a coded packet to multiple receivers in a single transmission. Only the primary receiver acknowledges the reception by MAC-layer acknowledgements (synchronous ACKs) and the other receivers receive the coded packet by overhearing and acknowledge the reception by asynchronous ACKs, which are usually piggybacked in outgoing data packets. In realistic wireless networks, this mechanism may cause unnecessary retransmissions if asynchronous ACKs are dropped due to packet losses or arrive late and thus compromise the throughput gain brought by network coding. In this paper, we propose a framework of joint rate control and code selection (ORC) to address this issue, aiming at improving the performance gain of opportunistic network coding in wireless networks. The framework of ORC consists of two mechanisms: (1) Rate control: the optimal transmission rate for coded packets is selected by formulating the rate control process as a Finite Horizon Markov Decision Process. (2) Code selection: based on the results of rate selection, the packet combination for forming the coded packet is determined. Numerical results show that ORC can substantially improve the performance gain of opportunistic network coding compared with COPE.

In opportunistic networks (OppNets), instead of assuming a complete path, messages are exchanged opportunistically when two nodes encounter. To support efficient and reliable end-to-end messaging in OppNets, a number of routing protocols based on network coding have been proposed. However, few efforts in the studies focus on opportunistic network coding (ONC). It is because the coding opportunities do not probably exist in OppNets due to nodal mobility, low density, lossy link, etc. In this paper, an ONC routing model for OppNets based on a new hybrid communication scheme was proposed. The communication scheme combines contact-based communication mode used by most routing protocols in OppNets and contact duration-based communication mode employed by few routing protocols in OppNets. We also designed an ONC routing protocol based on the ONC routing model in OppNets. Simulated results show that compared with Epidemic routing, the ONC routing can achieve higher delivery ratio and lower delay but consume fewer network cost.

WBRONC: Efficient Wireless Broadcast Retransmission Based on opportunistic network coding

It is significant to develop a method to realize efficient broadcast retransmission in wireless networks. network coding is a promising technique for this purpose. In this paper, we propose a novel Wireless Broadcast Retransmission scheme based on opportunistic network coding (WBRONC) aiming at reducing the number of transmissions, as well as improving the transmission efficiency. This scheme employs a new packet scheduling algorithm which uses Packet Distribution Matrix (PDM) directly to select coded packets. Thus, low computational complexity is obtained by it. It is denoted from the analysis and simulation results that the WBRONC scheme provides a substantial improvement both in transmission efficiency and computational overhead.

A one-hop opportunistic network coding algorithm for wireless mesh networks

This paper proposes a Bearing opportunistic network (BON) coding procedure that operates in wireless multihop networks over multiple unicast sessions and it introduces very low overhead to the network. The BON coding is used to increase network performance in terms of a higher throughput and a lower delay. It can be seen as an independent layer in the communication stack, relying solely on information that is on the node itself. The proposed coding procedure is easy to implement and deploy. The performance evaluation of the BON coding procedure was performed in a dedicated simulation model. The comparison was made to the well-known network coding procedure COPE and the case where network coding is not used at all. Results show that BON coding increases the network goodput and decreases the delay in comparison to COPE and case where network coding is not used.

Stability Region and Delay Analysis of a SWIPT-Based Two-Way Relay network With opportunistic network coding

In this article, we consider a buffer-aided two-way relay network in which a wireless-powered relay acts as an intermediate node for exchanging the data between two sources. The relay applies a time-switching (TS) policy to switch between data decoding (DD) and energy harvesting (EH) modes. Due to the presence of data queues at the relay, the relay is capable of employing opportunistic network coding (ONC) for transmission of the packets. Based on some realistic assumptions, we derive the stability region of such a network through designing TS and ONC policies. It is proved that the stability region is characterized by the TS policy and zero-wait ONC policy. Moreover, we derive the throughput-optimal and power-optimal policies and show that these policies provide the maximum coding opportunities. Also, we derive the average delay of an applied TS-ONC policy at the relay through modeling the data queues and energy buffer of the relay by two inter-related quasi-birth-death processes. We show that although waiting in ONC does not contribute to throughput-optimal and power-optimal policies, it can reduce the average delay. Finally, through simulation, we confirm our analytical results.

In this paper, we study a User Grouping based opportunistic network coding (UG-ONC) scheme for multi-user multi-relay uplink transmission scenario. In traditional opportunistic network coding (ONC) schemes, the use of network coding is often determined by the state of relays, i.e., buffer, packets waiting time, packets' successful decoding. However, whether the use of network coding is beneficial to the users is not considered. In our proposed UG-ONC scheme, whether network coding is adopted is not only determined by the state of relays, but also by the link quality between users and base station, that is, determined by the state of users. We consider two information-theoretic metrics, i.e., outage probability and throughput, to evaluate the validity and reliability of the UG-ONC scheme. And the approximate expressions of outage probability and throughput are derived. To further examine the performance of the scheme, we compare UG-ONC scheme with an existent network coding scheme. Monte Carlo simulations are presented to validate our analysis. The results show that our proposed UG-ONC scheme achieves considerable gains over the traditional network coding scheme. Our proposed UG-ONC scheme gives a new thought for designing opportunistic network coding.

Energy-efficient dynamic resource allocation with opportunistic network coding in OFDMA relay networks

network coding is significantly able to save system resources for wireless networks, and has been widely studied for the 802.11 wireless local area network and traditional cellular networks. The relay technology was introduced in 802.16j, 802.16m, and Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) standards. Recently, the application of network coding to multi-hop wireless relay networks has been taken into consideration. Although the introduction of relay stations (RSs) may bring more energy consumption, it provides opportunities for network coding to save spectrum resources. Nevertheless, the benefits of network coding are diminished by high multiuser diversity based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). For ensuring the superiority, network coding is performed opportunistically according to the channel state. Hence dynamic resource allocation (DRA) subject to rate constraints is combined with the idea of opportunistic network coding to minimize the total transmission power in a frame. A fixed set of discrete modulation levels in an OFDMA relay system is also considered. By taking the characteristic of a half-duplex decode-and-forward (DF) mode relay, a solution is proposed for the optimal problem of each subframe after separating power-aware relay selection. Simulation results show that DRA with opportunistic network coding can improve system energy efficiency. Further, it is more efficient for saving energy than DRA with static network coding compared solely to DRA. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

opportunistic network coding (ONC) has attracted much attention recently. The main improvement of ONC over the traditional network coding is that ONC allows the encoding node to decide whether it employs network coding based on the status of all its input streams. However, due to the nature of fading, wireless links may not always be reliable. Thus, the performance gain of ONC over traditional methods may be diminished due to wireless links in deep fading. Fortunately, some techniques, such as ARQ (Automatic Repeat reQuest) and cooperative diversity etc. can be used to mitigate it. In this paper, we consider the wireless butterfly network topology, a basic component of complex wireless networks. In order to improve the network performance via taking the advantage of ONC, ARQ and cooperative diversity, we propose a new Cooperation-based opportunistic network coding (CP-ONC) protocol and then analyze its performance in terms of network throughput and delay. The advantage of CP-ONC over ONC is that it employs truncated ARQ and cooperative diversity to enhance the reliability of the wireless links. Various simulations show that CP-ONC achieves better gain over ONC in terms of network throughput and delay, especially in low Signal to noise ratio (SNR) region.
