Satellite communications have been rapidly developed due to its advantageous of wide coverage and large capacity. However, an efficient and robust transmission scheme still needs carefully designed due to the time-varying and unreliable nature of links of the satellite networks. In this paper, we consider cooperative communications by selecting relays dynamically via setting an appropriate threshold according to the real-time channel conditions to avoid error propagation and then apply opportunistic network coding (ONC) to further enhance network throughput. Considering the sparse representation of natural images, block based compressive sensing (BCS) and the proposed ONC are combined in a novel way forming an energy-efficient image processing system which is easy to be implemented. Simulation results show that the scheme we proposed can gain better performances compared with traditional cooperative and network coding methods.

In this paper, we study the problem of correlated data gathering in wireless sensor networks. An opportunistic routing protocol joint with opportunistic network coding is proposed for correlated data gathering. In order to reduce the total transmission, we introduce the expected number of coded transmission (ECTX) as metric for the routing selection. Moreover, we also define the coding gain for the network nodes to count the coding opportunistic, with which the throughput of the wireless sensor network is further increased. Numerical simulations are conducted for performance analysis with the proposed routing scheme.

A Transmission Algorithm using opportunistic network coding (TAONC) searches coding opportunities that minimize the amount of radio communication energy between a sender and multiple receivers in wireless networks. It calculates the energy gain of network coding at both a sender and receivers when a TAONC reduces communication energy by encoding multiple transmission packets into one. It considers the energy overheads, which are consumed by the TAONC and a Reception Algorithm using opportunistic network coding (RAONC). We show that opportunistic network coding can effectively decrease the wireless communication energy even with consideration of the overheads. We study an appropriate algorithm complexity that optimizes the benefit of network coding with its overhead.

Fractionated Spacecraft is a concept which transforms a traditional monolithic spacecraft into a network of elements where a free-flying payload module is supported by nearby free-flying infrastructure modules. In this paper, we propose a novel concept named as Payload-Distributed GEO Communication Satellite System (PD-GEO) which divides the traditional GEO communication satellite into several modules. Those modules can be reconfigured, added, or exchanged independently from the others, and be reused over several missions. Then, for the purpose of reliable and high-efficient data transmission in this system, an opportunistic network coding based cooperative information exchange ((ONCIE)-I-2) scheme was presented. Qualitative analysis and extensive simulations demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of (ONCIE)-I-2.

Collaborative Data Collection with opportunistic network Erasure coding

Disruptive network communication entails transient network connectivity, asymmetric links, and unstable nodes, which pose severe challenges to data collection in sensor networks. Erasure coding can be applied to mitigate the dependency of feedback in such a disruptive network condition, improving data collection. However, the collaborative data collection through an in-network erasure coding approach has been underexplored. In this paper, we present an opportunistic network Erasure coding protocol (ONEC) to collaboratively collect data in dynamic disruptive networks. ONEC derives the probability distribution of coding degree in each node and enables opportunistic in-network recoding, and guarantees that the recovery of original sensor data can be achieved with high probability upon receiving any sufficient amount of encoded packets. First, it develops a recursive decomposition structure to conduct probability distribution deconvolution, supporting heterogeneous data rates. Second, every node conducts selective in-network recoding of its own sensing data and received packets, including those opportunistic overheard packets. Last, ONEC can efficiently recover raw data from received encoded packets, taking advantages of low decoding complexity of erasure codes. We evaluate and show that our ONEC can achieve efficient data collection in various disruptive network settings. Moreover, ONEC outperforms other epidemic network coding approaches in terms of network goodput, communication cost, and energy consumption.

The two-way relaying system is a promising research direction, for which there are two well-known amplify-and-forward (AF)-based protocols: analog network coding (ANC) and time division broadcast (TDBC). In this paper, we first compare the outage probability performance of these two protocols under the same conditions. It can be observed that ANC performs better under the low SNR circumstance, while TDBC is superior in the high. On this basis we put forward an opportunistic network coding scheme, which can choose the better transmission strategy according to instantaneous channel state. More optimal performance can be obtained by the help of the improved scheme. Furthermore, we derive a tight lower bound of the outage probability for the opportunistic network coding scheme, which is very close to the exact value for the whole SNR range. This is proved by simulation and numerical results.

Since wireless network link and network topology are polytropic,many problems of data transmission in WSN are drawing public *** the contrary,network coding has a certain advantage in the aspect of improving retransmission efficiency and reducing *** this paper,we analyzed the working principle of wireless network coding in depth and we researched a network coding algorithm based on random network and opportunistic network to solve the problem of wide bandwidth and low efficiency of *** specific approach was:using traditional retransmission ARQ mechanism and random network theory-during the first data package transmission,some packages are not transmitted according to random selection but these packages would be transmitted during the second transmission with retransmission *** second retransmission is made up of lost data and packets which were not transmitted during the first *** method could not only reduce the number of packets and retransmission times but also improve transmission efficiency and network throughput.

OM²DNC: opportunistic Max²-Degree network coding for wireless data broadcasting

In wireless broadcasting systems, multiple retransmissions are commonly employed to guarantee the correct reception of each packet. The traditional hybrid automatic retransmission request protocol retransmits one packet per slot. Hence, a large amount of retransmissions is required to correctly receive all the packets, which leads to low spectrum efficiency. In this paper, we propose an opportunistic Max(2)-Degree network coding ((OMDNC)-D-2) based wireless broadcasting (WBC) protocol. Specifically, to reduce the overall number of retransmissions, lost packets of different user equipments (UEs) are combined by performing Max-Degree network coding (NC) at the access node. Then, NC combined packets are broadcasted by utilizing the Max-Degree based opportunistic retransmission protocol. At each UE, the lost packet can be recovered by using the proposed joint network recursive systematic convolution decoder. Theoretical analyses and simulation results show that the average number of transmissions performance of the proposed (OMDNC)-D-2 based WBC protocol outperforms that of the traditional NC based WBC protocols. In this paper, we study an opportunistic subchannel scheduling problem for the relay-based OFDMA cellular network where relay stations (RSs) can perform opportunistic network coding with downlink and uplink sessions of a mobile station (MS). In wireless networks, network coding is one of promising techniques to improve network performance in various aspects. However, previous studies did not provide optimal opportunistic resource allocation solutions for the OFDMA networks with network coding-aware RSs as well as they did not consider practical duplexing schemes for the transmission of network coded data. In this paper, to allow network coding with downlink and uplink sessions at RSs, we consider a time-division duplexing (TDD) based time-slot structure. We formulate a stochastic optimization problem to maximize the average weighted-sum rate for both downlink and uplink sessions. Then, by solving the problem, we provide an optimal opportunistic subchannel scheduling algorithm that can opportunistically use network coding with considering time-varying channel states.

A recent approach COPE, presented by Katti etal. (Proc. ACM SIGCOMM 2006, pp. 243-254) for improving the throughput of unicast traffic in wireless multihop networks exploits the broadcast nature of the wireless medium through opportunistic network coding. In this paper, we analyze throughput improvements obtained by COPE-type network coding in wireless networks from a theoretical perspective. We make two key contributions. First, we obtain a theoretical formulation for computing the throughput of network coding on any wireless network topology and any pattern of concurrent unicast traffic sessions. Second, we advocate that routing be made aware of network coding opportunities rather than, as in COPE, being oblivious to it. More importantly, our model considers the tradeoff between routing flows close to each other for utilizing coding opportunities and away from each other for avoiding wireless interference. Our theoretical formulation provides a method for computing source destination routes and utilizing the best coding opportunities from available ones so as to maximize the throughput. We handle scheduling of broadcast transmissions subject to wireless transmit/receive diversity and link interference in our optimization framework. Using our formulations, we compare the performance of traditional unicast routing and network coding with coding-oblivious and coding-aware routing on a variety of mesh network topologies, including some derived from contemporary mesh network testbeds. Our evaluations show that a route selection strategy that is aware of network coding opportunities leads to higher end-to-end throughput when compared to coding-oblivious routing strategies.
