Multicast-capable optical code label switching and its experimental demonstration

optical multicasting employing wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) has a problem with scalability, because the number of multicast members may surpass the number of available wavelength paths. In contrast to the conventional connection-oriented approach, this paper proposes optical code (OC) label switching for multicast networking and experimentally demonstrates this approach. The enabling components are an OC label, on which multicast group information is mapped, and a multicast routing table implemented with a reconfigurable optical matrix switch. This approach mitigates the scarcity of wavelength resources, thus, providing scalable optical multicast networking.

In optical packet switching (OPS) and optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) systems, label generation and processing are key technologies. Recently, several label processors have been proposed and demonstrated. However, in order to recognize N different labels, N separate devices are required. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a large-scale, multiple optical code (OC)-label generation and processing technology based on multi-port, a fully tunable optical spectrum synthesizer (OSS) and a multi-wavelength electro-optic frequency comb generator. The OSS can generate 80 different OC-labels simultaneously and can perform 80-parallel matched filtering. We also demonstrated its application to OCDMA. (C) 2007 optical Society of America.

Stacked optical code label for multicasting in optical packet switching networks

Stacked optical code (OC) label and its en/decoder based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This kind of label can carry several nodes' address information simultaneously in optical packet switching networks, so it can be employed in optical multicasting and simplify the node's structure a lot. The en/decoder is fabricated with high precision by our FBG techniques, and the experiment results show that the stacked OC label can support optical multicasting very well. A NEW FAMILY OF optical code SEQUENCES FOR USE IN SPREAD-SPECTRUM FIBEROPTIC LOCAL-AREA NETWORKS

In this paper, we address the problem of the algebraic construction of a particular family of optical codes for use in code division multiple access (CDMA) fiber-optic local area networks. The conditions that the code families have to satisfy when used in such systems are reviewed. The newly constructed codes are called quadratic congruence codes, and the construction of the corresponding sequences is based on the number theoretic concept of quadratic congruences. It is shown that p - 1 codes exist for every odd prime p, and can serve as many as p - 1 different users in the fiber-optic code division multiple access system. The newly constructed codes belong to the family of optical orthogonal codes, and we establish their auto- and cross-correlation properties and compare their performance to the previous optical codes. We present examples of the codes and the examples of their auto- and cross-correlation functions.

An ultrahigh-speed photonic access node using optical code-based photonic add-drop multiplexing (PADM) and its novel applications to optical data networking are proposed. PADM processes a photonic label of packet, which is mapped onto an optical code, and adds-drops the packet from or to the node, or bypasses the node. PADM is distinct from conventional wavelength ADM (WADM) in that it can handle traffic on a packet-by-packet basis. In the application of PADM to optical data networking, pseudo-time division multiple access (TDMA) and rate-controlled asynchronous access are proposed. The analyses and their numerical simulations of the performances are presented. The simulation results demonstrate low packet-loss probability. Their optical implementations are also demonstrated, in which exploit parallel photonic label processing shows the applicability of proposed optical data networking in an ultrahigh-speed regime.

Performance analysis of optical code switching router

In this work we study and evaluate the performance of an optical code switching router (OCSR), intended to be utilised in hybrid wavelength-division multiplexing/optical code-division multiplexing (WDM/OCDM) networks. This OCSR can transport and route efficiently user data over optical code paths without departing from the optical domain. Limitations of the proposed OCSR are investigated and its superior performance demonstrated based on non-coherent prime codes. Our results indicate that our solution is useful in showing the effects of the optimum threshold level on the OCSR performance. We propose a continuous adjustment of the optimum threshold level based on the measurement of the mean optical power before the decoder. The influence of various parameters of the optical codes on the OCSR performance are also considered and evaluated. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Photonic MPLS internetworking using an optical code label stack

Generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS), which enables dynamic optical path provisioning, is promising. However, the critical issues of GMPLS in the optical domain are the data granularity of a wavelength and the very exiguous label space. The capacity of a single wavelength path may be sometimes too large to accommodate the traffic between edge node pairs, and the label space may be too small to assign the labels to each packet or flow. To solve the granularity and label space issues, optical code MPLS (OC-MPLS) is proposed. In this paper, OC-MPLS internetworking is introduced and experimentally demonstrated. One of the key techniques is photonic label processing of a label stack attached to a single packet or flow. The proposed method performs routing of packets or flows for interconnected OC-MPLS networks depending on the attached label stack in an all optical manner.

We propose a new family of two-dimensional wavelength-hopping/time-spreading code for optical code-division multiple-access systems with balanced detection, and we numerically analyze the characteristics of the proposed system. By using the proposed decoding scheme, the undesired interference is efficiently eliminated. The proposed scheme has enhanced performance and allows for a large number of simultaneous users compared with the three-dimensional and other balanced codes for differential detection.
