Analysis of users' searches of CD-ROM databases in the national and university library in Zagreb

This study investigates the behavior of two groups with different degree of independence in the search of CD-ROM databases (PsyLit and BIOSIS, SPIRS software). In the group A were users who needed only some technical assistance in communication with a computer/database, while the members of the group B searched CD-ROM databases completely independently. data were collected by means of questionnaires and transaction logs of search strategies. Statistical data support the hypothesis that the two groups differ both in their experience and frequency in using computer. However, by the analysis of variables used in search strategies/tactics i.e. a) variables relating to the knowledge of search systems and syntax, b) variables defining the search strategies (number of words, concepts, steps, and cycles), c) variables regarding the qualitative indicators (clarity, specificity and complexity of determined strategies in relation to search topic title, and errors) and search results variables (number of retrieved references, number of relevant references, search precision, and results with zero hits) we did not obtain statistically significant difference in the user behavior. Both groups used facilities for a more comprehensive and successful search they were offered on-screen to a low degree. Results obtained by this research show that end-user education is necessary for CD-ROM database searching, although CD-ROM is primarily designed for end-users. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Multimedia language learning courseware: a design solution to the production of a series of CD-ROMs

Multimedia software combining video, sound, pictures, text and feedback in an interactive environment is ideally suited for developing a foreign language skill, but is costly and time-consuming to produce. This paper describes the production and the learning rationale of a series of six multimedia CD-ROMs that develop the listening skills of learners of Business English. The problems of cost, time, and quality which were encountered in the production of multiple courseware are described. The programming solution to these problems is put forward. This involved the creation of tools which enabled the subject expert to have complete and direct control over the language learning material. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Sixty-seven searchers carried out 275 searches, both with and without postings information, of a LISA CDROM. This provided an opportunity to investigate the effect of cognitive styles on searching behaviour which has substantial implications both for the teaching of searching and for search system design. Subjects were tested for field-dependence/field-independence and for Comprehension/Operation/Versatile learning styles. Statistically significant differences in both searching behaviour and search outcomes were obtained by those with different learning styles, with and without postings information. These results are presented and implications for training are discussed.

PROTOTYPING A DISTRIBUTED INFORMATION-RETRIEVAL SYSTEM THAT USES STATISTICAL RANKING

Centralized systems continue to dominate the information retrieval market, with increased competition from CD-ROM based systems. As more large organizations begin to implement office automation systems, however, many will find that neither of these types of retrieval systems will satisfy their requirements, especially those requirements involving easy integration into other systems and heavy usage by casual end users. A prototype distributed information retrieval system was designed and built using a distributed architecture and using statistical ranking techniques to help provide better service for the end user. The distributed architecture was shown to be a feasible alternative to centralized or CD-ROM information retrieval, and user testing of the ranking methodology showed both widespread user enthusiasm for this retrieval technique and very fast response times (on the order of one second for 300 megabytes of data).

Computers with graphics screens and pointing devices such as the ‘mouse’ provide the opportunity for highly interactive user interfaces. This paper describes some novel software for displaying documents on graphics screens: the software provides a fast and simple way for users to peruse documents and to examine the parts that interest them. One application of the software is as a front end to a document retrieval system, since it provides a way for users to identify quickly the records that are of relevance to them and to provide feedback between the user and the underlying retrieval system.

It points out gaps in holdings as well as areas of overlap with other libraries. Collaborative practice of science construction in a computer-based multimedia environment

This paper discusses a case study of nine-pairs working collaboratively in a multimedia CDROM science environment. The main goal of the study was to investigate the ways in which the collaborative use of a multimedia-based encyclopaedia can foster science learning. By focusing on pupils' discursive, cognitive and collaborative activities, the study highlights pupils' information handling and knowledge construction in the multimedia context. Also the pupils' developing understanding of the science concepts dealt with in the tasks are considered. The research data consist of video and audio recordings, interviews, questionnaires and field notes collected from one 6th grade primary classroom. The results show that the pupils' activities during task-processing were highly procedural and product-oriented. The nature of the activity was also reflected in the pupils' poster displays indicating rather surface-level and incoherent understanding of the science concepts. The pupils were also found to have inefficient skills in accessing and retrieving information from the multimedia software. Although the findings are strongly linked with the nature of the collaborative task designed around the multimedia context and with the sociocultural background of the pupils, the study illuminates common problems related to the use of multimedia-based CD-ROMs in learning and points out aspects which need to be considered in order to make collaborative learning more effective in multimedia environments. Narratives of new media in Scottish households: The evolution of a framework of inquiry

The authors describe a study of the social dynamics of new media in Scottish households. The evolving project drew on dialogues with multiple household members elicited in group conversations. This approach to interviews captured different and conflicting points of view, a feature shared with certain social approaches to systems design. Analysis of the interview transcripts revealed that there are recurrent narratives and behavioral genres across households (and across sample groups), and that these reflect tactics, stratagems, and plans by means of which respondents navigate social space. The authors' approach contrasts with prevailing 'needs and uses" models in information science, in offering a methodological framework based on group narrative and genre analysis that contributes to a theory of social informatics in the household.
