CDROM technology: World scenario and Indian experience

CDROM technology has been available for ten years and has become very popular in the last five. This paper presents an overview of the world scenario of CDROM technology and highlights its future. It then discusses the CDROM industry in India and lists the various Indian CDROM products that are of recent origin. The paper concludes that India could adopt this technology, which has vast potential for publishing Indian databases and needs to rationalise its CDROM procurement. The introduction of compulsory computer education in Indian schools augurs well for the CDROM market.

Following a brief introduction to the history of online and online training, this article surveys current training from the point of view of the trainers, the trainees and the media. The final section deals in depth with computer-assisted instruction for online searching with examples drawn from a number of available packages. Some of the techniques, such as self-testing and search simulations, as well as the advantages of this method of instruction are discussed.

The National CD-ROM Sampler is a collection of significant Extension material collected from across the United States, and was a project requested by the National Agricultural Library (NAL) and the Extension Service/United States Department of Agriculture (ES/USDA0 to investigate and evaluate the use of CD-ROM technology as a means for storing and distributing Extension-related information. This article recounts the experiences of the Interactive Design and Development (IDD) staff in producing the Sampler. The WHDB (Welthandels Datenbank - World Trade database) of the BWK (Austrian Federal Economic Chamber) is a specialised information service which provides Austrian firms, companies and governmental institutions with information and data about worldwide commodity trade statistics. Its second function is to be a leading source for introducing new information media into the department. such as developing a company profile CD-ROM. Only a few parameters are of crucial significance in describing a request for information in the field of import and export statistics. Nevertheless the process of choosing the right source to satisfy the user's demand is often rather tricky and very dependent on experience and skill. In the process of reorganising this information service from a rigid, programmed, host-oriented inhouse data service of the early 1980s to a customer-oriented information service for the 1990s, using online and CD-ROM sources, a number of investigations were made to locate the relevant sources and to evaluate their significance for this service. As a result, a survey of sources of statistical import and export data will be presented. Another result is the perception that attributes like accuracy, precision and individual tuning have priority over offering large amounts of data, automation and sophisticated statistical methods. We concluded with a model of a combined system using internal sources for automatic explorations and external sources for accuracy and flexibility. After one year of intense work with the chosen external sources, a critical revision of some of the assumptions and conclusions was made, leading to a system of using only external sources (online and CD-ROM) for data acquisition, freeing the local computers for subsequent processing, organisation and preparation of this retrieved data.
