Distributed real-time control and data acquisition of free-electron laser beams

Implementation of a feedback control scheme and its associated user-interface and data acquisition modules in a distributed real-time computing environment are described. The distributed system consists of an ethernet network interconnecting real-time processor modules to host workstations and other embedded controllers. The goal of the feedback control scheme is to maintain positions of the electron beam in the middle of the vacuum chamber in the presence of electromagnetic interference and noise. Technical details of implementing the data acquisition and control scheme and their integration with the existing control system modules are presented, along with experimental results.

Travelling-wave modelling of the modulation dynamic performance of wavelength-tunable laser diodes using the integrated VPI and PICS3D software

The modulation dynamic performance of a three-section bulk InGaAsP/InP tunable laser diode (TLD) operating at 1550-nm under direct intensity modulation during discontinuous tuning is investigated with the travelling-wave approach, using commercial software tools VPI and PICS3D. The authors demonstrate a strong effect of the gain spectra shape on the modulation response of the TLDs. Two models have been developed for simulation of the modulation response which incorporate real gain spectra of TLDs obtained either from experiment or ab-initio calculations: (i) the VPI + PICS3D integrated model, and (ii) the fitted parabolic shape gain model. The results obtained for both models are in good agreement. A significant similar to 3 times increase of the relaxation oscillation frequency and the corresponding modulation bandwidth was observed under blue wavelength tuning of the TLD over a 21-nm range from the initial 1550-nm lasing wavelength. The authors show that the main physical reason for this increase is a dispersion of the differential gain which increases about 4 to 5 times when the lasing wavelength decreases over the above tuning range. The reported enhancement of the modulation response of TLDs is important for their practical applications.

Application of machine learning for signal recognition in distributed fibre optic acoustic sensing technology

Coherent Rayleigh scattering-based distributed fibre optic sensing technology enables real-time acquisition of vibration and acoustic information along the optical fibres. However, the complexity of monitoring environments often leads to false alarms and missed detections during the process of information source identification with distributed acoustic sensing (DAS). Therefore, it becomes crucial to effectively extract meaningful signal features and perform accurate pattern recognition in the presence of external noise disturbance. The authors provide a comprehensive review of signal feature extraction and pattern recognition techniques applied in DAS technology. After introducing the fundamentals of DAS, specific applications are considered, and the following techniques have been analysed and compared: feature extraction algorithms based on wavelet decomposition, feature extraction schemes utilising other decomposition models, traditional recognition classifiers, and neural network-based recognition classifiers using deep learning. The advantages and limitations of each scheme are discussed, along with their potential applications in various scenarios. The aim is to provide insights into the latest technologies in signal processing and pattern recognition for DAS, fostering further advancements in this field. Simphony: An Open-Source Photonic Integrated Circuit Simulation Framework

We present Simphony, a free and open-source software toolbox for abstracting and simulating photonic integrated circuits, implemented in Python. The toolbox is both fast and easily extensible;plugins can be written to provide compatibility with existing layout tools, and device libraries can be easily created without a deep knowledge of programming. We include several examples of photonic circuit simulations with novel features and demonstrate a speedup of more than 20x over a leading commercially available software tool.

Time-domain travelling-wave algorithms on the analysis of distributed feedback lasers

Simple and straightforward modifications are proposed to improve the performance of the existing time-domain travelling-wave algorithm in solving the coupled-wave equations. The conditions of convergence of the modified time-domain travelling-wave algorithms are also derived. It can be shown that the algorithm realised by a two-dimensional second-order approximation has the fastest computational speed. It is also accurate enough to model the static and dynamic behaviour of different types of distributed feedback semiconductor lasers with large coupling coefficient.

Smart environments require a huge number of sensors and actuators that interact and transfer information from the physical world to a virtual reality. In the paper, we discuss approaches to computer-aided simulation of distributed microsystems. Our focus is on micro-opto-electromechanical systems (MOEMS) that are based on a combination of optical, mechanical and electrical effects. Technological uncertainties result in the change of MOEMS output characteristics and can result in incorrect data transfer from the physical world to a virtual reality. We discuss our experimental results for distributed MOEMS. Finally, we make conclusions about supporting collaboration in smart environments with distributed MOEMS.

Reliable and accurate camera calibration usually requires an expert intuition to reliably constrain all of the parameters in the camera model. Existing toolboxes ask users to capture images of a calibration target in positions of their choosing, after which the maximum-likelihood calibration is computed using all images in a batch optimization. We introduce a new interactive methodology that uses the current calibration state to suggest the position of the target in the next image and to verify that the final model parameters meet the accuracy requirements specified by the user. Suggesting target positions relies on the ability to score candidate suggestions and their effect on the calibration. We describe two methods for scoring target positions: one that computes the stability of the focal length estimates for initializing the calibration, and another that subsequently quantifies the model uncertainty in pixel space. We demonstrate that our resulting system, AprilCal, consistently yields more accurate camera calibrations than standard tools using results from a set of human trials. We also demonstrate that our approach is applicable for a variety of lenses.
