Vibration-Based Delamination Detection in Composite Structures Employing Mixed Unified Particle Swarm optimization

The present paper introduces mixed unified particle swarm optimization (MUPSO) algorithm to detect and quantify the delamination damages in composite beams and plates using vibration responses. MUPSO is a combination of conventional continuous unified particle swarm optimization (UPSO) and a binary version of UPSO, which is proposed in this paper. The first few modes have been used to detect delamination damages through a two-stage method. In the first stage, rough locations of damages have been determined from a mode-shape curvature-based damage index using the gapped smoothing method. In the second stage, the mixed UPSO approach is used to get an accurate lengthwise location of the delamination along with the delamination interface. While the continuous part of the mixed UPSO has been used to obtain the lengthwise location of the damages, the binary part of the mixed UPSO has been used to determine the interface of the damage. The present method has quantified each damage scenario consisting of single and multiple interface delaminations with acceptable accuracy. The algorithm is also found to be performed satisfactorily under a noisy environment. The results obtained from experimental investigation are also presented. Overall, the present two-stage method has shown very good potential in the field of damage detection of composite structures.

Long-wave antennas are extensively employed in extra long-distance communications and navigation, ocean surveillance, and radio broadcasting, owing to their superior propagation characteristics at low frequencies. Long-wave signals, characterized by strong penetrating power and extended propagation ranges, are well-suited for remote communications and signal transmission in unique environments. As information and communication technologies continue to evolve, the design and optimization of long-wave antennas have emerged as a focal research area. This article systematically reviews the fundamental principles, common types, design methodologies, and recent research advancements of long-wave antennas, aiming to offer a comprehensive reference framework to facilitate further advancements and applications in long-wave antenna technology.

Hydrogen refueling stations that produce hydrogen on-site from renewable sources are an interesting solution to guarantee green hydrogen with zero CO2 emissions. The main limit in developing these stations is the hydrogen production cost, which depends on the plant size (hydrogen production capacity) and on the availability of renewable energy sources. In this study, a techno-economic evaluation of an on-site Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) based on a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) plant integrated with an electrolysis unit is performed. In particular, an optimization problem based on an economic objective function that includes installation and operation costs is formulated in order to choose the size of the HRS components that minimize the unitary cost of hydrogen production through the plant's lifetime. © 2024 IEEE.

This study addresses the critical issue of vehicle path planning in the context of an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) by harnessing the power of Genetic algorithm (GA) optimization. As transportation systems face escalating challenges, the use of intelligent solutions becomes imperative. The rise of big data has catalyzed the development of intelligent transportation systems, where the use of advanced technologies enables improved efficiency and safety. Intelligent vehicle path planning, a cornerstone of ITS, is explored in depth in this study. A comprehensive review of related literature underscores the importance of path planning algorithms and highlights recent advances and breakthroughs. The proposed model integrates GA with quantum technology to improve search efficiency and solution quality. Through careful experimentation and analysis, the effectiveness of the GA optimization process is demonstrated, showing its ability to navigate complex road networks while minimizing travel time and risk. This paper embarks on a rigorous and comprehensive exploration of widely adopted optimization techniques, specifically focusing on their performance when applied to the notoriously challenging Rosenbrock function. As a benchmark problem known for its deceptive curvature and narrow valleys, the Rosenbrock function provides a fertile ground for examining the nuances and intricacies of algorithmic behavior. The study delves into a diverse array of optimization methods, including traditional Gradient Descent, its stochastic variant (SGD), and the more sophisticated Gradient Descent with Momentum. The investigation further extends to adaptive methods like RMSprop, AdaGrad, and the highly regarded Adam optimizer. By meticulously analyzing and visualizing the optimization paths, convergence rates, and gradient norms, this paper uncovers critical insights into the strengths and limitations of each technique. The global climate crisis is placing higher demands on the performance of wind turbines. One of the promising methods to enhance the wind turbine performance is to increase the rotor diameter by having larger blades. However, the blade length is always constrained by its fatigue life due to vibratory loads or aeroelastic instabilities. To overcome this limitation, in this study a Nonlinear Energy Sink (NES) device is proposed to be integrated inside the blade to reduce the plunge and twist vibrations of the blade. NES devices are ineffective until an energy threshold of the primary system is exceeded at which point, they become highly effective at damping nonlinear structures. In this paper, this energy threshold correlates to the onset of flutter instability. One of the limitations of using a passive NES is that it could enhance the vibration of the system considerably in regions prior to flutter occurring if it is optimised for unstable damping. For this reason, this paper proposes the usage of a tuneable NES as an active vibration absorber that is capable of tuning to the optimum parameters of a given wind condition. A genetic algorithm has been used to demonstrate the effectiveness of tuning the NES to the optimum conditions for each flow speed. The Tuned NES (TNES) is shown to have an average amplitude reduction of about 19% across the range of flow speeds compared to 9% for the passive design with fixed optimum parameters.

Energy-aware redundancy-aware clustering in wireless sensor networks using Spined Loach Searching optimization

Wireless sensor networks play dominant role in data communication in many engineering applications and faces lot of challenges in its implementation. Energy conservation is also significantly required in these systems as the sensor nodes are battery operated. Hence, the energy efficient-based technique needs to be implemented in data transmission. The most widely used methods are clustering-based data transmission and energy efficient routing detection. In clustering, the proper selection of cluster head (CH) node is important to ensure energy balancing. The CH node should have more residual energy as it does many transmissions in the network. Moreover, the location of CH node should be nearer to all member nodes in the cluster. The clustering process must also perform the job of avoiding unnecessary transmissions. By considering these factors, the CH node can be optimally selected using Spined Loach Searching optimization algorithm. The food searching behavior and environmental suitability for spiny loach fish living are deliberated to develop this bio-inspired algorithm. In addition, the redundant transmissions inside the clusters can be reduced by employing a new technique called Least Difference Threshold Based Similarity Grouping. This work improves energy efficiency comparing with the conventional low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy protocol, and it is evaluated by setting the network in simulation environment. The network lifetime is increased;energy consumption, delay of transmission and the message cost are reduced.

Simulation of Chlorophyll a Concentration in Donghu Lake Assisted by Environmental Factors Based on Optimized SVM and Data Assimilation

Lake eutrophication is a global water environmental problem and has become a research focus nowadays. Chlorophyll a concentration is an important index in terms of evaluating lake eutrophication. The aim of this study was to build an effective and universal empirical model for simulation of chlorophyll a concentration in Donghu Lake. On the basis of the relationship between chlorophyll a concentration and dissolved oxygen (DO), water temperature (T), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP), models for simulating chlorophyll a concentration were built by using simulated annealing (SA), genetic algorithm (GA), artificial bee colony (ABC), and particle swarm optimization (PSO) to optimize parameters of support vector machine (SVM). Moreover, a collaborative mode (Col-SVM model) was built by introducing data assimilation, and meanwhile, accuracy and universality of the model were studied. Modeling results showed that the application of optimization algorithms and data assimilation improved the performance of modeling based on SVM. Model simulation results demonstrated that the Col-SVM model has high accuracy, decent stability, and good simulation effect;the root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE), bias, and mean relative error (MRE) between simulated values and observed values were 10.07 mu g/L, 0.31, 0.96, -0.050, and 0.15, respectively. In addition, model universality analysis results revealed that the Col-SVM model has good universality and can be used to simulate the chlorophyll a concentration of Donghu Lake at different times. Overall, we have built an effective and universal simulation model of chlorophyll a concentration that provides a new idea and method for chlorophyll a concentration modeling.

Verification of Image-Based Neural Network Controllers Using Generative Models

Although neural networks are effective tools for processing information from image-based sensors to produce control actions, their complex nature limits their use in safety-critical systems. For this reason, recent work has focused on combining techniques in formal methods and reachability analysis to obtain guarantees on the closed-loop performance of neural network controllers. However, these techniques do not scale to the high-dimensional and complicated input space of image-based neural network controllers. This work proposes a method to address these challenges by training a generative adversarial network to map states to plausible input images. Concatenating the generator network with the control network results in a network with a low-dimensional input space, which allows for the use of existing closed-loop verification tools to obtain formal guarantees on the performance of image-based controllers. This approach is applied to provide safety guarantees for an image-based neural network controller for an autonomous aircraft taxi problem. The resulting guarantees are with respect to the set of input images modeled by the generator network, and so a recall metric is provided to evaluate how well the generator captures the space of plausible images.

The traditional genetic algorithm in path planning has slow convergence speed, easy to premature and poor path quality. An improved genetic algorithm for path planning is proposed to improve both the crossover operator and the variation operator of the algorithm, and the heuristic crossover operator with adaptive strategy adjusted variation operator is designed to obtain the optimal solution. Path planning algorithm based on viewable view with improved genetic algorithm. The objective function of effectiveness is constructed and the optimal scheduling model of electronic warfare resources is established, and then the optimal scheduling plan of resources using the improved genetic algorithm model is utilized. The coordinates of the main point of the image are closer to the reference value, which can better alleviate the phenomenon of premature convergence and stagnation and improve the calibration accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.
