An Eddy-Current Testing Method for Measuring the Thickness of Metallic Plates

Thickness measurements of metallic plates are mandatory in many industrial scenarios. Methods based on eddy-current testing (ECT) are ideal for fast and accurate online contactless thickness measurements, making them very attractive in the Industry 4.0 scenario. This contribution is focused on a specific and robust ECT technique proposed in the past by the scientific community. The main limitation is its applicability to thin materials only, where the thickness of the material is much smaller than the overall size of the ECT probe. Extending the range of applicability to thicker materials introduces a progressive and severe degradation of the measurement accuracy. In this article, we analyze the theoretical foundation of this method with an entirely original approach based on the celebrated Buckingham p theorem. In doing this, we draw the complete theoretical picture of the method, providing a simple, clear, and rigorous view of its performance and intrinsic limitations. Moreover, we propose two solutions, one analytical and the other iterative, to accurately estimate the thickness of the materials from thin to thick values. Finally, a numerical analysis combined with an experimental campaign confirms the effectiveness of the proposed solutions, making the method suitable for industrial and other applications.

A foreground digital calibration algorithm for time-interleaved ADCs with low computational complexity

In front of the offset, gain, timing, and bandwidth mismatch errors, time-interleaved analog-to-digital convert-ers (TIADCs) are usually calibrated to achieve satisfying performance. In this paper, we propose a new digital calibration approach for TIADCs, including the direction-distance search algorithm and multiplier-free gradient descent method. Compared to state-of-the-art multiplication-less techniques, this approach significantly reduces time complexity by minimizing search space dimension, subtracting the number of searches, and varying iteration step size. Notably, no multiplier is needed in the mismatch estimation, resulting in a much lower computational complexity than in previous work. For a 12-bit 4-channel TIADC, simulation results show that the signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio is improved from 25 dB to 65 dB within the duration of 1600 samples. The proposed calibration circuit is synthesized targeting standard 28-nm technology, occupying the area of 0.014 mm2 and dissipating the power of 19 mW at 2.8 GHz clock frequency.

This paper is dedicated to the fundamental research of the mechanical model of a 1/4-vehicle semi-active suspension system with time-delayed state feedback control during wheel vertical displacement. The strategy combining the "equivalent harmonic excitation" optimization algorithm with the particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed in this paper. Through the optimization and solution of time-delayed feedback control parameters of the 1/4 vehicle semi-active suspension system, the dynamic response of the vehicle suspension system before and after parameter optimization is studied. The research results indicate that, compared to passive control, time-delayed feedback control of wheel vertical displacement can significantly improve the smoothness, handling stability, and safety of vehicle operation.

Accurate forecasting of natural gas consumption (NGC) plays an important role in energy supply, energy trading, economic effects and environmental sustainability. NGC forecasts can be used to adjust production and supply plans to improve gas efficiency and reduce carbon emissions and supply chain waste. This paper reviews the research progress on NGC in the past decade, analyzes the typical characteristics of different forecasting strategies, and highlights 163 studies in terms of the technical aspects of feature processing methods, data decomposition methods, forecasting models and optimization algorithms. It also systematically elaborates the application of statistical models, machine learning models, grey models, logistic regression and their combinations in predictive models. Bibliometric methods are also utilized to dissect research hotspots and summarize cutting-edge trends in the field. It is worth mentioning that in the terms of hybrid model structures, the application and performance of various model structures are described and evaluated. In this paper, the future development is discussed from spatiotemporal characteristics, studying reasonable data decomposition layers and fusion models, considering potential data privacy issues, and developing artificial intelligence-supporting models and interpretable frameworks. This paper is expected to provide a multi-technology reference for natural gas forecasting and help researchers to select and develop more accurate forecasting techniques and strategies.

A new optimization algorithm for the design of aperiodic multilayer mirror for 17.1 nm and 30.4 nm

A new algorithm, Genetic/Tabu hybrid algorithm (GTHA) to optimize the aperiodic multilayer mirrors which combines the advantages of genetic algorithm (GAs) with tabu search (TS) algorithm is proposed in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) range. Aperiodic multilayers are designed using GTHA for the selection of Fe-IX and He-II emission lines contrasting to the traditional periodic multilayers for a single wavelength. Materials of Mo and Si are selected for their high stability and fairly high reflectivity. High reflectance of 48.62% for the Fe-IX line (lambda=17.1nm) and reflectance of 20.57% for the He-II line (lambda=30.4nm) are reached by the new algorithm. Comparisons between aperiodic multilayers found by GTHA and the ones optimized using GAs indicate the effectiveness and reliability of the new hybrid algorithm. The aperiodic designs are compared with the periodic ones as well. And the aperiodic multilayers found by GTHA also have the better performance than periodic ones. The practicability of the aperiodic design optimized by GHTA is verified by the sensitivity analyses to thicknesses errors, which indicated it more feasible to fabricate the aperiodic multilayers in practice.

The implementation of the Laplace equation in a slope stability analysis: the streamline method

The Laplace equation satisfies the principle of the minimum potential energy, which means that groundwater flows through soil in an optimized path of minimal energy under a given condition. The essential idea of the proposed method is to convert a pure optimization problem into a boundary value problem by solving an anisotropic Laplace equation. A virtual seepage field is constructed to compute streamlines based on a dedicated permeability tensor. The permeability tensor is deduced according to the slope stress state. The magnitude of the tensor is determined by the stress failure ratio (SFR), and the major principal direction of the tensor is determined by the orientation of the maximum SFR. The boundary conditions can be applied as the entry and exit method used widely in the limit equilibrium method. The most critical slip surface is the streamline with the minimal safety factor. The proposed method is based on an elastic finite element stress and a confined virtual seepage field. Neither iterations nor assumptions about the slip surface shape and the interslice force are required in the proposed method. The major advantage of the proposed method is the optimization dimension reduction. This approach converts a 2D slope stability optimization problem into a 1D problem and greatly increases the efficiency of critical slip surface searching.

Wind speed fluctuations and load demand variations represent the big challenges against wind energy conversion systems (WECS). Besides, the inefficient measuring devices and the environmental impacts (e.g. temperature, humidity, and noise signals) affect the system equipment, leading to increased system uncertainty issues. In addition, the time delay due to the communication channels can make a gap between the transmitted control signal and the WECS that causes instability for the WECS operation. To tackle these issues, this paper proposes an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) as an effective control technique for blade pitch control of the WECS instead of the conventional controllers. However, the ANFIS requires a suitable dataset for training and testing to adjust its membership functions in order to provide effective performance. In this regard, this paper also suggests an effective strategy to prepare a sufficient dataset for training and testing of the ANFIS controller. Specifically, a new optimization algorithm named the mayfly optimization algorithm (MOA) is developed to find the optimal parameters of the proportional integral derivative (PID) controller to find the optimal dataset for training and testing of the ANFIS controller. To demonstrate the advantages of the proposed technique, it is compared with different three algorithms in the literature. Another contribution is that a new time-domain named figure of demerit is established to confirm the minimization of settling time and the maximum overshoot in a simultaneous manner. A lot of test scenarios are performed to confirm the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed ANFIS based technique. The robustness of the proposed method is verified based on the frequency domain conditions that are driven from Hermite-Biehler theorem. Novel IAPSO-LSTM neural network for risk analysis and early warning of food safety

Ensuring food quality and safety is essential after ensuring the quantity of food. Therefore, an improved adaptive particle swarm optimization algorithm (IAPSO) for optimizing the long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network (IAPSO-LSTM) is proposed to develop a food safety risk early warning model in this paper. The proposed IAPSO algorithm is verified by comparing with the traditional PSO (TPSO), the classic PSO (CPSO), the adaptive PSO (APSO) and the deterministic and adaptive PSO (DAPSO) based on five common benchmark functions in terms of the convergence speed and precision. Results show that the IAPSO algorithm has the best convergence speed and precision. Then, the analytic hierarchy process based on the sum product is used to obtain the risk value of food safety detection data, which is used as the desired output of the LSTM. And the root mean square error of the predicted risk value and the real food risk value is used as the objective function of the IAPSO algorithm to optimize the hyperparameters of the LSTM. Finally, the food safety risk early warning model based on the IAPSO-LSTM is evaluated using the composite seasoning detection data from a food testing agency in Guizhou Province, China. The proposed model effectively identifies high-risk factors affecting the risk value, with sodium cyclamate being the primary high-risk factor. The overall performance of the IAPSO-LSTM model is superior to that of the TPSO-based LSTM, the CPSO-based LSTM, the APSO-based LSTM, the DAPSO-based LSTM and the IAPSO-BP, with the prediction error of 0.474, R2 value of 0.998 and the absolute error less than 5. Moreover, the proposed model can help the relevant government departments effectively warn the potential food safety risks to ensure the food safety.

A collection of sensor nodes called a wireless sensor network is used to track and document the physical parameters of the surrounding area. The design of network clustering approaches has a big problem when it comes to extending the lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and improving energy usage by making sure Both the processing speed and the batteries have a lengthy lifespan. This study presents a framework for machine learning-based channel property variation tracking and learning that is based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-Long Short-Term Memory (Convolutional-LSTM) network. Our hybrid technique improves sensor connectivity and lowers power consumption, Wireless sensor network longevity is increased. These algorithms are evaluated in a wireless sensor network: Harris Hawks Optimisation (HHO), Coyote Optimisation algorithm (COY), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Genetic algorithm (GA). As for nodes analysis and energy consumption, the article concludes demonstrates the CNN-LSTM technique under consideration outperforms other algorithms. The learning authentication system's robustness and detection performance are thoroughly examined, and exhaustive simulations and testing reveal a notable improvement in the detection accuracy in time-varying scenarios.

Investigation on the Integration of Low-Cost NIR Spectrometers in Mill Flour Industries for Protein, Moisture and Ash Content Estimation

The flour milling industry-a vital component of global food production-is undergoing a transformative phase driven by the integration of smart devices and advanced technologies. This transition promises improved efficiency, quality and sustainability in flour production. The accurate estimation of protein, moisture and ash content in wheat grains and flour is of paramount importance due to their direct impact on product quality and compliance with industry standards. This paper explores the application of Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy as a non-destructive, efficient and cost-effective method for measuring the aforementioned essential parameters in wheat and flour by investigating the effectiveness of a low-cost handle NIR spectrometer. Furthermore, a novel approach using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) is proposed to estimate the protein, moisture and ash content in grain seeds and flour, marking the first known application of FCMs in this context. Our study includes an experimental setup that assesses different types of wheat seeds and flour samples and evaluates three NIR pre-processing techniques to enhance the parameter estimation accuracy. The results indicate that low-cost NIR equipment can contribute to the estimation of the studied parameters.
