This work aims to design a hydraulic hybrid vehicle model with a series transmission architecture. The hydraulic hybrid transmission uses hydro-pneumatic accumulators to store energy instead of batteries or capacitors and, although less well known, can offer several advantages compared to hybrid-electric systems. In the implemented model, a pump is connected to an engine and supplies hydraulic power to a hydraulic motor, linked to the vehicle wheels axle. Regenerative braking is enabled with the hydraulic motor, working as a pump, and returning fluid power to the accumulator. optimization tools were used to select the dimensions of the components and to determine the values of the control variables for activating the pump/accumulator. The model implemented had its consumption reduced by about 50 % in relation to the reference values, and the accumulator volume was reduced about 11 % concerning the calculated analytical values.

A Review of Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Construction Scheduling Supported with optimization tools

This article reviews the accomplishments of studies in which optimization tools were used to develop energy-efficient and sustainable construction schedules. With the increase in global awareness of environmental issues, the construction industry has been forced to explore innovative techniques to make the building process more energy-efficient and sustainable. Project managers can use optimization tools in their scheduling procedures to address these issues in the early stages of the project. Therefore, this paper examines different optimization-based construction scheduling methods and their impact on schedule energy efficiency and the three key sustainability goals: economic viability, social equity, and environmental protection. Such a review has not yet been conducted to the best of our knowledge. This research aims to fill the gap and contribute to understanding advanced optimization tools that can pave the way to energy-efficient and sustainable scheduling practices. After a brief introduction, the background of optimization-based construction scheduling techniques that aim to improve construction management and incorporate these aspects into the decision-making process is explained. Then, these approaches are addressed in detail. It is determined for each study whether it adopted energy efficiency goals and which sustainability dimensions it considered within the proposed optimization model. The results of this study indicate a wide heuristic algorithms application for complex scheduling problems. Meanwhile, mathematical programming is still quite unexplored, especially methods that utilize algebraic modeling languages. This study provides a foundation for further research by addressing the current reach in development and possible knowledge gaps that could be researched in future studies. Studies show that movable shading systems have lots of benefits for building performance. Minimizing energy consumption and maximizing daylight usage are natural expectations when using these systems. To find optimal solutions for these systems, different methods have been used. Today, optimization methods are used to solve this problem. In the literature, there are few studies about optimization of movable shading systems. This paper aims to identify different movable shading systems, optimization types, and computational optimization tools that are used. Research findings and future projections based on the reviewed papers are summarized.

Improving building thermal energy performance is essential to reducing energy consumption, minimizing carbon emissions, and enhancing occupants' thermal comfort. For this purpose, there is an increasing research interest in this field of building energy performance. This review aims to present a precise and systematic overview of the sensitivity analysis in optimizing the thermal energy performance of buildings. The investigation covers various aspects, including sensitivity analysis techniques, key measures and variables, objectives and criteria, software tools, optimization methods, climate zones, building typology, and climate change effects. The findings reveal that sensitivity analysis is a powerful technique for optimizing energy performance and identifying adaptive strategies such as dynamic shading, reflective coatings, and efficient HVAC set points to address climate change. Most of the study also highlights that the temperature set point is the key influential parameter in both heating-dominant and cooling-dominant climate zones. This review offers critical insights on advancing sustainable building design, informing policy, and guiding future research in energy-efficient building solutions.

Systematic conservation planning (SCP) involves the cost-effective placement and application of management actions to achieve biodiversity conservation objectives. Given the political momentum for greater global nature protection, restoration, and improved management of natural resources articulated in the targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework, assessing the state-of-the-art of SCP is timely. Recent advances in SCP include faster and more exact algorithms and software, inclusion of ecosystem services and multiple facets of biodiversity (e.g., genetic actions, and increased SCP accessibility through online tools. To promote the adoption of SCP by decision-makers, we provide recommendations for bridging the gap between SCP science and practice, such as standardizing the communication of planning uncertainty and capacity-building training courses.

An Application Of Genetic Algorithm For Optimizing Demand Side Management Problem In Distribution Network Systems

The demand side management (DSM) is one of the most vital techniques which electric utilities have applied to control their electricity demand by incentivizing customers to modify their energy consumption patterns during peak hours or reduce their overall energy consumption. This paper studied the application of genetic algorithm (GA) to optimize the DSM problem to bring economic efficiency to electric customers. The objective function of the optimal problem was the maximum loading factor or the minimum energy cost. In addition, the equality and inequality constraints of DSM techniques were also set so that the GA can be applied to find the optimal solution for customers. The optimization toolbox in the Matlab software was applied to establish the mathematical model of the optimization problem. The test system including a synthetic load and three large-capacity boilers was carried out to validate the method. The optimal simulation results of the proposed method indicated clearly that the loading profiles of the loads in the test system were flexibly adjusted to maximize the loading factor as well as to minimize the energy cost of the whole system.

Utilization of process network synthesis and machine learning as decision-making tools for municipal solid waste management

This paper introduces the utilization of two different optimization models as a decision-making tool for municipal solid waste management. This study aims to provide a framework of decision-making in managing municipal solid waste in Malaysia and demonstrating the function model's potential for a decision-making tool. Process network synthesis is used as a first optimization model to generate feasible pathways for municipal solid waste conversion technologies. A standard data mining technique using machine learning was applied for a simple case study of municipal solid waste management. Data were divided with a ratio of 90:10 for training and testing data and further analysis using different model functions. The model functions involved are linear regression, multilayer perceptron neural network, and sequential minimal optimization regression. The linear regression function provides a better correlation coefficient than other models, 0.5894. The correlation coefficient for testing data slightly increases. The multilayer perceptron model improved its correlation coefficient when inputting the testing dataset. The multilayer perceptron model's correlation coefficient reached 0.7169 compared to the linear regression function. Therefore, this case study used the multilayer perceptron model as a basis. Results showed that both integrations of optimization models could be successfully used as a basis in waste management decision-making tools with good performance. The decision-making tool provides a faster and efficient way for the user and stakeholder to manage municipal solid waste. Developing a decision-making tool framework for municipal solid waste management can help achieve better municipal solid waste management.

The reliance on optimization techniques for robust assessments of environmental and energy-saving solutions has been largely driven by the increasing need to comply with international energy policies. However, numerous challenges arise from inherently conflicting objectives for a sustainable built environment, that is, maximizing thermal comfort, and indoor air quality, while minimizing energy consumption, forming a multi-objective optimization problem. Consequently, studies seeking multi-faceted optimality in the design and/or operation of low-energy buildings have exponentially increased over the past few years. This research critically reviews the latest multi-objective optimization studies that present energy consumption, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality as competing targets. By examining 82 records between 2013 and 2022, key discussions focused on commonly investigated objective functions, design variables, and performance metrics. The review also investigates the latest research trends, optimization techniques, algorithms, and tools, and identifies gaps in knowledge and potential future research directions. The review results showed that most studies used a holistic approach that targeted all three objective functions, with the largest portion performed on office and residential buildings. The most commonly investigated design variables are system-related variables, whereas buildingrelated and occupant-related variables are often overlooked. Coupling simulation tools and optimization algorithms is the most widely utilized optimization approach, with genetic algorithms being the most employed. These findings suggest a promising area for future research on methodological optimization approaches, which are expected to be significantly transformed with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies.

Much advancement has been made in wind power due to modem technological developments. The wind energy technology is the world's fastest-growing energy option. More power can be generated from wind energy by the use of new design and techniques of wind energy machines The geographical areas with suitable wind speed are more favorable and preferred for wind power deployment over other sources of energy generation. Today's wind turbines are mainly the horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) and vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs). HAWTs are commercially available in various sizes starting from a few kilowatts to multi-megawatts and are suitable for almost all applications, including both onshore and offshore deployment. On the other hand, VAWTs finds their places in small and residential wind applications. The objective of the present work is to review the technological development, available sizes, efficiencies, structural types, and structural stability of VAWTs. Structural stability and efficiencies of the VAWTS are found to be dependent on the structural shape and size.

Finding the gaps and methodology of passive features of building envelope optimization and its requirement for office buildings in India

Developing countries, such as India, face the challenge of increased energy consumption in buildings. One of the reasons for high energy consumption is the large glazed facades of buildings that cause overheating. The energy consumption problem can be solved by optimizing passive design features of the building envelope at an early design stage according to the climate of that building location. This study determined the gaps in the building envelope optimization of office buildings in India and its requirement. Moreover, it reviewed variables of the building envelope design, current trends for simulation and optimization methodologies, criteria for selection of simulation, and optimization tools. More than 100 studies were reviewed, particularly studies performed in India on related topics. The results are based on statistical charts generated using the reviews. The results include the methodology for the research and development of a base case model, selection of building design variables, and simulation and optimizations tools.
