Simultaneously optimizing the structure and operating parameters of distillation columns based on rigorous ratebased models is critical for various process intensification technologies to achieve their intended purpose in realworld distillation columns. However, efficiently optimizing a distillation column based on rate-based models while considering the column hydraulics is far from practical. The biggest obstacle in using rigorous models for distillation columns in an equation-oriented environment is ensuring a robust solution for large-scale, strongly coupled nonlinear models, along with the simultaneous optimization of integer and continuous variables. In this study, a new optimization framework was introduced. It incorporated a pseudo-transient simulation method to ensure convergence of the simulation in equation-oriented environment. Additionally, an efficient relaxation method transformed the mixed integer nonlinear programming problem into a nonlinear programming problem, facilitating simultaneous optimization of both the integer variable representing column structure and the continuous variables governing column operation. Three examples, including a complex intensified catalytic distillation column, were optimized to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed framework. Specifically, its advantages in terms of mathematical optimality and industrial feasibility were illustrated.

In this work, we present a new method for the design of heat flux manipulating devices, with emphasis on their manufacturability. The design is obtained as solution of a nonlinear optimization problem where the objective function represents the given heat flux manipulation task, and the design variables define the material distribution in the device. In order to facilitate the fabrication of the device, the material at a given point is chosen between two materials with highly different conductivity. By this way, the whole device can be seen, in the large scale, as a metamaterial having a specific anisotropic effective conductivity. As an application example, we designed a heat flux inverter which was so simple that it could be hand-made. The performance of this device for heat flux inversion was experimentally tested, proving that it was more efficient than a more complex device designed using the classical transformation thermodynamics approach.

While dividing wall columns can be considered an established technology and success story of distillation process intensification, the application of the technology is still limited in relation to the vast number of existing distillation columns. This can at least to some extent be traced back to potential controllability issues and the complexity of the process design. While the first issue is especially related to internal vapor splits, which require an accurate design and consideration of column hydrodynamics, the latter issue becomes more severe with an increasing number of products and column sections, for which the number of degrees of freedom and design alternatives increase exponentially. While modified design concepts for dividing wall columns that allow for an external control of vapor splits have been proposed, similar to four-product dividing wall columns, there is still a lack of computationally efficient tools for the design and optimization of these energy-efficient thermally coupled distillation processes. The current article presents an optimization-based approach for the design of such complex and integrated distillation processes, enabling a case-specific economic assessment and benchmarking. The application is demonstrated for different case studies, including the separation of an azeotropic quaternary system in a multi-dividing wall column.

Interaction, specification refinement, and tradeoff exploration in optimization-based design of engineering systems

The classical nonlinear programming problem formulation is often too rigid to adequately describe an engineering design problem. Recently a design methodology was developed, based on a problem formulation featuring three types of specifications: hard constraints, soft constraints and objectives. The corresponding mathematical problem is a sequence of constrained 'minimax' optimization problems. Such minimax problems highlight the competition between various specifications and facilitate tradeoff exploration. Accordingly, the new methodology emphasizes designer's intuition and man-machine interaction. In this paper, we demonstrate the crucial role of interaction in an engineering design context. As meaningful interaction is greatly facilitated if suitable sensitivity information is available, we then investigate ways of computing such information and of graphically conveying it to the user. © 1986.

Electrifying distillation- optimization-based evaluation of internally heat-integrated distillation columns

Improving the energy efficiency of distillation processes is essential for reducing the chemical industry's substantial energy demand and environmental footprint. The use of mechanical heat pumps with compressors is an important asset in this transformation process, as it not only enables the recovery of heat rejected at low temperature, reducing external energy requirements, but also facilitates the electrification of chemical processes and distillation in specific. The necessary temperature lift dictates the required compression rate for the compressor and is therefore of considerable importance for the applicability of mechanical heat pumps. By operating the rectifying and stripping sections of a column at different pressures and enabling heat exchange between the respective sections, temperature lift and compression ratio can be reduced for the so-called Internally Heat- Integrated Distillation Columns compared to mechanical vapor recompression. In order to enable a quick problem specific evaluation of the possible benefits of this concept we propose two novel superstructure models for optimal design, that allow for heat exchange between stages at the same height or arbitrary stages in the rectifying and stripping section, provided a minimum temperature difference is maintained. The respective optimization problems are solved as a series of successively relaxed mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems in GAMS. An automatic stepwise initialization and optimization strategy provides a computationally efficient approach for the determination of optimized designs.

Financial optimization and design of hybrid ground-coupled heat pump systems

A strategy to optimize the net present value of a hybrid ground-coupled heat pump system is presented. The method relies on a spectral-based simulation tool that predicts the heat pump performance on an hourly basis and on a optimization algorithm. The approach considers the project financial parameters, the hourly thermal load of the building, the pumping energy, the control strategy, the design fluid temperature of the heat pumps, the ground thermal properties, the footprint available for the ground heat exchanger, the local construction and equipment costs as well as complex electricity rates such as demand charges and energy. The proposed method gives the optimal number and location of the vertical boreholes, the number of required heat pumps and their operating temperature limits as well as the optimal energy savings generated by the ground-coupled heat pump system. Results indicate that fine tuning some design parameters such as the number of boreholes and installed heat pumps or the temperature limit in heating mode can significantly improve the financial performance of a project. Additionally, results confirm that use of hybrid systems could reduce significantly the electrical consumption and peak electrical load of a building. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Co-design optimization of a Novel Multi-identity Drone Helicopter (MICOPTER)

Delivery drones have always faced challenges when it comes to reliably deliver packages. This paper introduces a novel concept of a hybrid drone called "MICOPTER" to alleviate this issue. Being able to fly in three modes of aircraft, helicopter, and gyrocopter, the proposed model of the multi-identity helicopter comprises a 2DOF tilting mechanism of rotors and a folding wing system leading to better performance and controllability. To scrutinize the idea, MICOPTER is compared to other types of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in terms of different performance parameters. The performance goal of the MICOPTER is the realization of a predetermined standard delivery drone mission based on Amazon Prime Air. According to the relevant literature, the corresponding conceptual design equations are formulated and the traditional matching diagram method is utilized to attain the initial design point. Afterward, a multidisciplinary-feasible design matrix is provided as well as multi-objective optimization to strive for optimal feasible configurations while maximizing cruise velocity and range. Furthermore, the configuration and performance of some of the feasible design points on the final Pareto frontier are compared with the traditional design. Finally, by simulating a typical flight profile and using robust non-linear backstepping control, the controllability of the proposed configuration is investigated. The controller performance is assessed considering its stability and tracking 8-shape trajectory. Results indicate the MICOPTER capabilities as a novel configuration in both terms of design performance and controllability.

In this context, the use of irregular array architectures provides a viable solution. This paper reviews and highlights some of the most recent advances in this field, including clustered, thinned, sparse, and time-modulated arrays, and their proposed design methodologies.

Toward an Empirical Practice in Offline Fully Automatic design of Robot Swarms

Due to the lack of systematic empirical analyses and comparisons of ideas and methods, a clearly established state of the art is still missing in the optimization-based design of robot swarms. In this article, we propose an experimental protocol for the comparison of fully automatic design methods. This protocol is characterized by two notable elements: 1) a way to define benchmarks for the evaluation and comparison of design methods and 2) a sampling strategy that minimizes the variance when estimating their expected performance. To define generally applicable benchmarks, we introduce the notion of mission generator: a tool to generate missions that mimic those a design method will eventually have to solve. To minimize the variance of the performance estimation, we show that, under some common assumptions, one should adopt the sampling strategy that maximizes the number of missions considered-a formal proof is provided as the supplementary material. We illustrate the experimental protocol by comparing the performance of two offline fully automatic design methods that were presented in previous publications.
