Topological redundancies in modern wireless infrastructures provide opportunities to enhance reliability and latency performances through multiple data paths, however, existing standards for wireless access networks cannot fully utilize such an added degree of freedom. packet-level coding, which proactively adds redundancy to the transmitted data at the packet level, can efficiently utilize the added bandwidth from all data paths and enhance reliability with low latency. Thus it is a good candidate to supplement single-link/physical layer techniques (e.g., channel coding) and provide a better chance of realizing new reliability- and delay-critical services, such as URLLC. In this paper we study the problem of how to optimally design the coding rate and packet distribution rule over multiple data paths to transmit a set of data packets under stringent reliability and delay constraints, so that radio resource cost is minimized. Since such problems are often NP-hard and obtaining optimal solutions usually requires very high-complexity exhaustive search, we propose novel heuristic algorithms that use the path resources in the order of their cost-effectiveness scores to approximately solve this problem. Numerical simulations show that our proposed algorithms can drastically reduce the computational complexity while still able to achieve near-optimal performance.

Modern wireless infrastructures provide multiple options for a transmitter to utilize multiple independent data paths. Examples include simultaneous connections via multiple radio access technologies (multi-RAT), dual/multi-connectivity and carrier aggregation in 5G, Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) network, etc. Such network redundancies can be utilized to provide enhanced reliability and/or delay performances over the wireless media, e.g., to support ultra-reliable low-latency (URLLC) services. However, traditional reliability enhancement techniques fall short of making efficient use of such multi-path transmission environments. packet-level coding, in this case, can be a better candidate to support URLLC since it provides enhanced reliability with higher spectral efficiency and low latency by proactively adding coded redundancy, which also enables the effective treatment of all paths as a single data pipe. As the multi-path scenarios are oftentimes heterogeneous in terms of supported data rate, packet-level reliability, transmission delay, etc., how to optimally design the coding parameters to achieve URLLC requirements becomes an issue. In this paper we study the problem of minimizing the transmission delay while meeting the required reliability target in the multi-path environment. We assume the packets arrive in bursts and linear packet-level coding is used to enhance reliability. We propose a fast bisection algorithm to determine the optimal code rate and path traffic distribution rule for the encoded packets, which provably achieves the minimum delay with the required reliability under very general conditions.

In the real-time communication service over fifth-generation (5G) wireless network, e.g., FaceTime video call, the data packet loss and jitter, which increase the end-to-end packet delay and result in video stuck or glitching, influence the quality of experience (QoE) severely. In order to reduce packet delay and loss, an easily-configured enhancement scheme, called packet-level coding transmission optimization (PCTO), is proposed for user equipment, e.g., smart phone. In the proposed scheme, the data packets are firstly encoded by packet-level coding (PC) module in which some redundant packets are generated. Secondly, we differentiate the transmission priority for each packet by transmission optimization (TO) module, in which two principles are enforced. The first principle is that the transmission priority of data packet is higher than the redundant packet in order to overcome congestion cycle. The second principle is that the remaining uplink resource is allocated to code blocks uniformly. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces 80% packet loss and 22% average delay at least and mean opinion score (MOS) can be improved by 33%. It can also be well adapted to different network conditions compared with existing schemes. Furthermore, the proposed scheme is compatible with the existing 5G standard. The procedures for configuring PCTO for an existing 5G network are also presented.

Hyperspectral imaging is a key remote sensing technology. The explosive growth in hyperspectral image data volume (several TBs per orbit) and instrument data rates (in the range of 20 Gbps), compete with limited available on-board storage resources and downlink bandwidth, making hyperspectral image data compression a mission critical on-board data processing task. In order to provide continuous and reliable data transfer from the on-board systems to the ground stations, channel coding is being applied at the end of the data processing pipeline to guarantee reliable communications even at low signal-to-noise ratio regimes. Moreover, erasure correcting codes working on information packets rather than bits or symbols, can provide downlink reliability in future RF and optical links especially when Automatic Repeat Queuing (ARQ) strategies are either problematic or impossible due to specific service delay constraints and intermittent connectivity. Committed to the vision for "Space Technology Designed in Greece", in this special session paper, we provide an overview of cutting-edge technology high-performance hardware accelerators developed in the NKUA Digital Systems and Computer Architecture Laboratory (DSCAL), applicable to next-generation payloads for earth observation, optical/RF communication and connectivity, including CCSDS hyperspectral image compression and channel-coding at bit-level and packet-level.

A new packet-combining (PC) scheme based on packet-level coding is proposed. Through feedback, the receiver controls the transmitting node to encode (XOR) source packets. Efficient methods to combat even-errors among erroneous packets are investigated. Also proposed is a reduced-complexity decoder. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme can significantly outperform the ARQ scheme or PC without coding.

Digital modulation and coding for satellite optical feeder links with pre-distortion adaptive optics

In this paper, a packet-level forward error correction coding technique and pre-distortion adaptive optics technology are applied to a digital transmission scheme for optical feeder links in a geostationary Earth orbit satellite communication system. The architectures of the gateway and the satellite are defined, including the building blocks of the interface between the radio frequency front-end and the optical front-end, as well as the digital signal processor. The system is designed to cater for Terabit/s high-throughput satellite applications. The performance of the digital transmission scheme is evaluated in the forward and return links. The turbulent atmospheric optical channel is modeled for different optical ground station altitudes. It is shown that fade mitigation techniques such as packet-level forward error correction coding and pre-distortion adaptive optics in the forward link, as well as large-aperture optical ground station telescope in the return link, are essential to close the link budget of a Terabit/s satellite communication system. The architectures of the gateway and the satellite are defined, including the building blocks of the interface between the radio frequency (RF) front-end and the optical front-end, as well as the digital signal processor. The system is designed to cater for Terabit/s high-throughput satellite (HTS) applications. In addition, the turbulent atmospheric optical channel is modeled for different elevation setups and optical ground station (OGS) altitudes in untracked and tracked beam scenarios. The performance of the digital transmission scheme is evaluated in the forward and return link channels. It is shown that fade mitigation techniques such as packet-level FEC coding in the forward link, as well as beam tracking, and large-aperture OGS telescope in the return link are essential to close the link budget of a Terabit/s satellite transmission link.

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are shown to tightly approach the performance of idealized maximum distance separable (MDS) codes over memoryless erasure channels, under maximum likelihood (ML) decoding. This is possible down to low error rates and even for small and moderate block sizes. The decoding complexity of ML decoding is kept low thanks to a class of decoding algorithms, which exploit the sparseness of the parity-check matrix to reduce the complexity of Gaussian elimination. ML decoding of LDPC codes is reviewed at first. A performance comparison among various classes of LDPC codes is then carried out, including a comparison with fixed-rate Raptor codes for the same parameters. The results confirm that a judicious LDPC code design allows achieving a near-optimum performance over the erasure channel, with very low error floors. Furthermore, it is shown that LDPC and Raptor codes, under ML decoding, provide almost identical performance in terms of decoding failure probability vs. overhead.
