Purpose Despite continuous research efforts, the literature is still inconclusive about the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and financial performance. With an aim to address this problem, this study aims to analyze the impact of CSR on financial performance in the Indian context. Design/methodology/approach Using a panel of top 137 companies from CNX-500 for 10 years (2008-2017), the impact of CSR on three indicators of financial performance, namely, Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE) and Net Profit Margin (NPM), is evaluated using the panel data regression analysis. The technique of content analysis is used to collect data on CSR from the annual reports of selected companies. Findings The study finds that the impact of CSR on financial performance may be neutral (with ROA and NPM) or negative (with ROE). The negative influence of CSR on ROE of firms supports the theory by Friedman (1970) that the only responsibility of business is to maximize profits and returns for its shareholders. Originality/value After amendments in Companies Act, 2013, there is limited literature addressing this scientific inquiry in the Indian context. The study period (2008-2017) includes CSR disclosures from both periods, before reforms and after reforms, which adds to the uniqueness of this research study. In addition, this study uses a research instrument consisting of a total of 178 CSR activities divided across 46 themes for collecting data from annual reports of the companies. The utilization of such a comprehensive research instrument, for the study, also adds to its peculiarity.

The purpose of this research was to see how the NBE bill purchase requirement affects Ethiopian private commercial Banks liquidity. This study categorizes the independent factors into bank specific factors and macroeconomic factors. The bank specific factors include capital adequacy, net interest margin, credit risk, bank size and Loan Growth while the macroeconomic factors include National bank Bill. The paneldata used for the sample of ten private commercial banks in Ethiopia from 2011 to 2016 year and estimate using Radom Effect Model (REM), data presented by using descriptive statistics and the balanced correlation and regressionanalysis for liquidity ratios conducted. The study shows that R-squared statistics and the adjusted-R squared statistics of the model are 80.18% and 76.88% respectively. This indicates that the changes in the independent variables (capital adequacy, credit risk, net interest margin, loan growth, and exposure to NBE bill) collectively explain 76.88% of the changes in the dependent variable (liquidity) and the remaining 23.12% of changes is explained by other factors which are not included in the model. Thus these variables collectively, are good explanatory variables of the liquidity of commercial banks Ethiopia.

The Food Security Index (consists of 19 indicators) was developed to assess the impact of environmental determinants on the state of food security. The formation of the integral index was carried out using principal component analysis. The proportions of the inclusion of each of the 19 indicators are based on the eigenvalues of the 1st principal component that explains 48.37% of the variation. Identification of the environmental factors influence on the Food Security Index was carried out using panel data regression analysis (random-effect GLS regression) for the sample of 28 post socialistic countries for the period 2000-2016. Empirical results reveal a statistically significant positive effect of most ecological determinants of sustainable agro-management on food security. While the impact of growth in coal use for electricity and fossil fuels is insignificant. However, the increase in the consumption of electricity and growth of unproductive energy losses negatively affects the food security.

Liquidity is one of the major concerns for banks and thus achieving the optimum level of liquidity is crucial. The main objective of this study was to identify the determinants of liquidity of private commercial banks in Ethiopia. In order to achieve the research objectives, data was collected from a sample of six private commercial banks in Ethiopia over the period from 2000 to 2015. Bank specific determinants bank size, capital adequacy; deposit growth, market concentration, on- performing loan and National Bank bill were analyzed by using the balanced panel fixed effect regression model. Bank's liquidity is measured in liquid asset to total asset. The findings of the study revealed that, National Bank bill and non-performing loan has negative and statistically significant impact on liquidity; while market concentration have positive and statistically significant impact on liquidity of Ethiopian private commercial banks. However, bank size, capital adequacy and deposit growth have no statistically significant effect on the liquidly of Ethiopian private commercial banks. The result of the study shows that higher level of market concentration among private commercial banks and due to excessive lending, the possibility of defaulting loans were increased. The study recommends that private commercial banks should plan their loan portfolio to reduce risk and government should control the competition to have more competitive edge in the industry.

Purpose: To examine the role of agricultural education and extension in influencing the adoption of best practice with regard to herd-level mastitis management. Design/Methodology/Approach: Somatic cell count (SCC) is an indicator of herd health with regard to mastitis and is negatively related to productivity and profitability. paneldataregression methods are utilised here to quantify the role of agricultural education and extension in reducing cell count and in influencing farmer best practice with regard to herd health. The impact of education and extension on farmer uptake of milk recording is of particular interest. data utilised is farm-level Farm Accountancy data Network (FADN) data for Ireland over a five-year period (2008-2012). Findings: Farmer uptake of formal agricultural training and liaison with agricultural extension services are shown to significantly improve mastitis herd health. Collectively, education, extension and milk recording results in an overall SCC reduction of 25% for the average herd. Farmers who undertook agricultural training were ten times more likely to monitor milk quality through milk recording compared to those who had not. Additionally, those farmers in contact with an extension service and also participated in a dairy discussion group were seven times more likely to practice milk recording. Practical Implications: The importance of farmer behaviour in the optimum management of herd health has been validated, as has the role of agricultural education and extension in influencing the uptake of best practice by farmers. Originality/Value: To date little research has been conducted using nationally representative herdlevel data on the role of agricultural education and extension in improving animal health best practice.
