Improving the performance and power efficiency of a single processor has been fraught with various challenges stemming from the end of the classical technology scaling. Thus, the importance of efficiently running applications on a parallel/distributed computer system has continued to increase. In developing and optimizing such a parallel/distributed computer system, it is critical to study the impact of the complex interplay amongst processor, node, and network architectures on performance and power efficiency in detail. This necessitates a flexible, detailed and open-source full-system simulation infrastructure. However, our community lacks such an infrastructure. In this paper, we present pd-gem5, a gem5-based infrastructure that can model and simulate a parallel/distributed computer system using multiple simulation hosts. Our experiment shows that pd-gem5 running on six simulation hosts speeds up the simulation of a 24-node computer system up to 3.2x compared with running on a single simulation host.

This work centres on a control framework for general multi-agent systems, which separates the design of agents behaviours (the application layer) from crosscutting control concerns (the control layer) regulating message exchange and processing. The goal is to support modelling and execution of a multi-agent system whose evolution is transparently governed by a pluggable control structure. A library of different control structures, including pure-concurrent and time-sensitive (real-time and simulation) strategies, was developed. The paper describes the developed control framework and focusses on the achievement of control strategies compliant with agent mobility and resource availability. The control design rests on a minimal actor computational model extended with actions, which are independent computational tasks able to execute in parallel. The approach enables model continuity, that is, the same model is used from analysis by simulation to implementation and real-time execution. The framework is prototyped on top of the JADE agent infrastructure. Usability and effectiveness of the resultant approach are demonstrated by a case study based on a complex closed queue network of services. This paper proposes a control framework for modelling and executing parallel/distributed multi-agent systems. The goal is to clearly separate agent behaviours (the application layer) from crosscutting control concerns (the control layer) which in general are orthogonal to a specific application and transparently affect and regulate its evolution. Different control strategies, ranging from pure concurrent to time sensitive (real-time or simulation) can be considered and applied as a plug-in to a multi-agent system. In this work the control framework is tailored to the JADE agent infrastructure, using a minimal actor computational model. JADE was chosen because it is widely used and open source, it adheres to FIPA communication standards which in turn favour application interoperability, it is based on Java. JADE, however, lacks of any built-in solution for developing time sensitive applications. This paper describes the proposed control framework in JADE and focusses on the achievement of control strategies compliant with agent mobility and resource availability. All of this favours model continuity, i.e. a seamless transformation from model analysis by simulation to model implementation and real time execution. A case study concerning a closed queue network is used for demonstrating the practical aspects of the approach. Finally, an indication of ongoing and future work is provided in the conclusions.

There are significant opportunities for the development of parallel/distributed simulation algorithms in the context of parametric study of discrete event systems. In such studies, simulation of multiple (often a large number of) parametric variants is required in order to, for example, identify significant parameters (factor screening), determine directions for response improvement (gradient estimation), find optimal parameter settings (response optimization), or construct a model of the response (meta-modelling). The computational burden in this case is to a large extent due to the large number of alternatives that need to be simulated. An effective strategy in this context is to concurrently simulate a number of parametric variants: the structural similarity of the variants often allows for significant amount of sharing of the simulation work, and the code for concurrent simulation of the variants can often be implemented in a parallel/distributed environment. In this paper, we describe two methods of parallel/distributed/concurrent simulation called the Standard Clock (SC) and the General Shared Clock (GSC) simulation. Both approaches rely on an event-reservation approach: by contrast to most discrete-event simulation approaches that are based on an event-scheduling approach, in the SC and GSC simulation, the occurrence instances of all events are reserved on the time axis. These instances may or may not be used. This event-reservation approach frees the dock mechanism of the simulation from needing feedback from the state-update mechanism. Due to this autonomy of the clock mechanism, a single clock can be used to drive a number (possibly large) of variants concurrently and in parallel. The autonomy of the clock mechanism is also the key to the different implementation strategies we adopt. To illustrate, we describe the simulation of parametric versions of wireless communication networks on message passing and shared memory environments.
