This paper describes how we use n-body simulations as an interesting and visually compelling way to teach efficient, parallel, and distributed programming. Our first course focuses on bachelor students introducing them to algorithmic complexities and their implications in real-world problems and state-of-the-art tools like Git, remote development, or C++, by simulating the collision of two galaxies. This project teaches the mapping of mathematical functions into code, efficient implementations, and the pitfalls around complexity and scaling. Our second course targets master students introducing them to intra- and inter-node parallelization. Here, the students simulate our solar system using OpenMP and MPI. The master students further deepen their knowledge of parallelization and scientific computing by choosing custom projects like simulating water molecules or implementing an interactive live visualization using *** courses are structured such that they can easily be adapted by other instructors. Bag of little bootstraps for massive and distributed longitudinal data

Linear mixed models are widely used for analyzing longitudinal datasets, and the inference for variance component parameters relies on the bootstrap method. However, health systems and technology companies routinely generate massive longitudinal datasets that make the traditional bootstrap method infeasible. To solve this problem, we extend the highly scalable bag of little bootstraps method for independent data to longitudinal data and develop a highly efficient Julia package ***. Simulation experiments and real data analysis demonstrate the favorable statistical performance and computational advantages of our method compared to the traditional bootstrap method. For the statistical inference of variance components, it achieves 200 times speedup on the scale of 1 million subjects (20 million total observations), and is the only currently available tool that can handle more than 10 million subjects (200 million total observations) using desktop computers.

For interconnection network losing processors, it is considerable to calculate the number of vertices in the maximal component in the surviving network. Moreover, the component connectivity is a significant indicator for reliability of a network in the presence of failing processors. In this article, we first prove that when a set M of at most 3n - 7 processors is deleted from an n -star graph, the surviving graph has a large component of size greater or equal to n! - vertical bar M vertical bar - 3 . We then prove that when a set M of at most 4n - 9 processors is deleted from an n -star graph, the surviving graph has a large component of size greater or equal to n!-vertical bar M vertical bar-5 . Finally, we also calculate the r -component connectivity of the n -star graph for 2 <= r <= 5 .

We investigate constructive interference (CI)-based symbol-level precoding (SLP) in large-scale systems with massive connectivity of users to minimize the transmit power subject to the instantaneous signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) and CI constraints. By converting the considered problem into a novel separable formulation, we reveal the existence of separability in SLP, which is therefore well-suited for decomposition. The proximal Jacobian alternating direction method of multipliers (PJ-ADMM) framework is adopted to decompose the reformulated problem into multiple subproblems, which can be solved in parallel with closed-form solutions. We further linearize the second-order terms by approximation, which leads to a parallelizable first-order fast solution to SLP. Our derivations are validated by simulation results, which also show that our algorithm can provide optimal performance with substantially lower computational complexity than state-of-the-art algorithms.

Using parallel & distributed computing for real-time solving of vehicle routing problems with stochastic demands

This paper focuses on the Vehicle Routing Problem with Stochastic Demands (VRPSD) and discusses how parallel and distributed computing Systems can be employed to efficiently solve the VRPSD. Our approach deals with uncertainty in the customer demands by considering safety stocks, i.e. when designing the routes, part of the vehicle capacity is reserved to deal with potential emergency situations caused by unexpected demands. Thus, for a given VRPSD instance, our algorithm considers different levels of safety stocks. For each of these levels, a different scenario is defined. Then, the algorithm solves each scenario by integrating Monte Carlo simulation inside a heuristic-randomization process. This way, expected variable costs due to route failures can be naturally estimated even when customers' demands follow a non-normal probability distribution. Use of parallelization strategies is then considered to run multiple instances of the algorithm in a concurrent way. The resulting concurrent solutions are then compared and the one with the minimum total costs is selected. Two numerical experiments allow analyzing the algorithm's performance under different parallelization schemas.
