Since the early 90s, when it was first released, Java has become one of the most widespread programming languages. discrete event simulation and also parallel discrete event simulation have attracted more and more projects which are Java-based. This paper presents a brief survey on the tools and facilities that make Java such an attractive option for parallel simulation developers. Nevertheless, several drawbacks and lacks of the language are also exposed.

The master/worker (MW) paradigm can be used to implement parallel discrete event simulations (PDES) on metacomputing systems. MW PDES applications incur overheads not found in conventional PDES executions executing on tightly coupled machines. We introduce four techniques for reducing these overheads on public resource and desktop grid infrastructures Work unit caching, pipelined state updates, expedited message delivery, and adaptive work unit scheduling mechanisms are described that provide significant reduction in overall overhead when used in tandem. We present performance results showing that an optimized MW PDES system can exhibit performance comparable to a traditional PDES system for a queueing network and a particle physics simulation.

The time management(TM) is concerned with ensuring that the execution of the parallel discrete event simulation is properly synchronized. This is particularly important for simulations, not only to ensure that events are processed in a correct order, but also to ensure that repeated executions of a simulation with the same inputs produce exactly the same results. The goal of the synchronization mechanism was to ensure that each LP processes events in time-stamp order. This requirement was referred to as the local causality constraint (LCC). This paper begins with introduction of synchronization mechanisms, and then comparatively discusses conservative algorithms and optimistic algorithms. Finally we emphatically provide and describe the implementation of a new optimized algorithm, termed as the flexible cycle algorithm, which solve the fatal problems of conservative or optimistic algorithms, resulting in the best of both methods.

In view of the present without formal verification method of the parallel event simulation model based on Entity Interaction Graph (EIG). This paper proposes an EIG model checking method based on CTL. This method transform EIG model into Kripke structure, and then use Computation Temporal Logic (CTL) describe the property of EIG model, finally input the Kripke structure and the specification described by CTL to the NuSMV. As a result, the verification of EIG model is realized by this way. Experimental results show that this method can effectively verify the correctness of EIC model and lay a foundation for the establishment of reliable parallel discrete event simulation.

Today large-scale simulation applications are becoming common in research and industry. A significant fraction of them run on multi-core clusters. Current parallel simulation kernels use multi-process and multi-thread to exploit inter-node parallelism and intra-node parallelism on multi-core clusters. We exploit task-base parallelism in parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) kernels, which is more fine-grained than thread-level and process-level parallelism. In our system, every simulation event is wrapped to a task. Work-stealing task scheduling scheme is applied to achieve dynamic load balancing among the multi-cores, and a graph partitioning approach is applied in partitioning simulation entities among the cluster nodes. Experimental results show that our PDES kernel outperforms existing PDES kernels by fully exploiting task parallelism.

We simulate model for evolution of local virtual time profile in conservative parallel discrete event the simulation (PDES) algorithm with long-range communication links. The main findings of simulation are that i) growth exponent depends logarithmically on the concentration p of long-range links;ii) utilisation of processing elements time decreases slowly with p. Thismeans that the conservative PDES with long-range communication links is fully scalable.

It has long been said that neuromorphic computing will yield enormous energy improvements on machine learning based computations and will be part of the next computing revolution. Yet, how likely is it that these goals are met once hardware-level constraints have been accounted for? In this paper, we benchmark the performance of a spintronics hardware platform designed for handling neuromorphic tasks. Spintronics devices that use the spin of electrons as the information state variable have the potential to emulate neuro-synaptic dynamics in hardware. Unlike their CMOS counterparts, spintronics-based neurons and synapses can be realized within a compact form-factor, while operating at ultra-low energy-delay point. To explore the benefits of spintronics-based hardware on realistic neuromorphic workloads, we developed a parallel discrete-event simulation model called Doryta, which is further integrated with a materials-To-systems benchmarking framework. The benchmarking framework allows us to obtain quantitative metrics on the throughput and energy of spintronics-based neuromorphic computing and compare these against standard CMOS-based approaches. Although spintronics hardware offers significant energy and latency advantages, we find that for larger neuromorphic circuits, the performance is evidently limited by the interconnection networks rather than the spintronics-based neurons and synapses. Thus, it becomes imperative to identify interconnect materials that would natively offer low latency and consume less energy than the current copper-based interconnects. Through Doryta we are also able to show the power of neuromorphic computing by simulating Conway's Game of Life. We show that Doryta obtains over 400 × speedup using 1,280 CPU cores when tested on a convolutional, sparse, neural architecture. © 2022 ACM.

In a previous paper, a quantitative criterion has been proposed for efficient execution of the Null Message Protocol, the best- known conservative parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) protocol. The criterion is based on a novel concept of the coupling factor, and allows one to use intuitive and easy-to-measure input parameters. The criterion can be used to assess simulation models 'potential for parallel execution as well as the maximum partitioning that may still potentially yield good performance. This paper deals with experimental verification of the proposed rule that a large coupling factor is a necessary precondition for getting a good speed-up with conservative parallel simulation. A closed queueing network is used as simulation model, and it is run on up to 24 CPU cores. It is shown that the criterion provides a quick and convenient way to determine whether a simulation model has a potential for speed-up before actually investing work in the parallelization.

Modeling Large-Scale Slim Fly Networks Using parallel discrete-event simulation

As supercomputers approach exascale performance, the increased number of processors translates to an increased demand on the underlying network interconnect. The slim fly network topology, a new low-diameter, low-latency, and low-cost interconnection network, is gaining interest as one possible solution for next-generation supercomputing interconnect systems. In this article, we present a high-fidelity slim fly packet-level model leveraging the Rensselaer Optimistic simulation System (ROSS) and Co-Design of Exascale Storage (CODES) frameworks. We validate the model with published work before scaling the network size up to an unprecedented 1 million compute nodes and confirming that the slim fly observes peak network throughput at extreme scale. In addition to synthetic workloads, we evaluate large-scale slim fly models with real communication workloads from applications in the Design Forward program with over 110,000 MPI processes. We show strong scaling of the slim fly model on an Intel cluster achieving a peak network packet transfer rate of 2.3 million packets per second and processing over 7 billion discrete events using 128 MPI tasks. Enabled by the strong performance capabilities of the model, we perform a detailed application trace and routing protocol performance study. Through analysis of metrics such as packet latency, hop count, and congestion, we find that the slim fly network is able to leverage simple minimal routing and achieve the same performance as more complex adaptive routing for tested DOE benchmark applications.

Model interoperability enables independently developed models to interoperate with each other and has been a key technology in distributed simulations such as HLA-supported simulations. parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) also uses object models to represent real world entities thus it can also benefit from adopting a model interoperability mechanism. The work in this paper developed a model interoperability layer in the PDES environment by conforming to its event-object paradigm. The model interoperability layer uses a proxy-based approach to enable object models in a PDES to "publish" and "subscribe" their attributes similar to mechanisms in HLA. Especially, this design is optimized for executing in cluster-like environment. Preliminary performance tests show that the optimization improves Data Distribution Management performance up to 12 times in a cluster environment compared with unoptimized design.
