The technical evolution of wireless communication technology and the need for accurately modeling these increasingly complex systems causes a steady growth in the complexity of simulation models. At the same time, multi-core systems have become the de facto standard hardware platform. Unfortunately, wireless systems pose a particular challenge for parallel execution due to a tight coupling of network entities in space and time. Moreover, model developers are often domain experts with no in-depth understanding of parallel and distributed simulation. In combination, both aspects severely limit the performance and the efficiency of existing parallelization techniques. We address these challenges by presenting parallel expanded event simulation, a novel modeling paradigm that extends discrete events with durations that span a period in simulated time. The resulting expanded events form the basis for a conservative synchronization scheme that considers overlapping expanded events eligible for parallel processing. We then put these concepts into practice by implementing HORIZON, a parallel expanded event simulation framework specifically tailored to the characteristics of multi-core systems. Our evaluation shows that HORIZON achieves considerable speedups in synthetic as well as real-world simulation models and considerably outperforms the current state-of-the-art in distributed simulation.

This paper documents the origins and development of the parallel and distributed simulation field, especially as it relates to parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) technology. My focus is on the people and ideas that contributed to the creation and evolution of PDES technology over the past five decades. Much of this paper reviews the research conducted in academia and research laboratories that were the driving forces behind the development of PDES technology as well as subsequent efforts in government and industry to bring the technology to modeling and simulation practitioners. The origins of PDES technology lie in a fundamental technical issue called the synchronization problem. This problem is discussed, as well as the two main solution approaches that were created. The development of these approaches and their evolution to form the time management services of the High Level Architecture (HLA) standard are described, as well as the community of researchers and practitioners that formed in establishing this field. Commercialization efforts are discussed followed by a brief discussion of areas requiring further research. The importance of the Society for Modeling and simulation International (SCS) and its flagship journal, simulation, in the development of the field are discussed. Throughout this discussion, I provide my personal observations and take away lessons concerning the development of the field.

A checkpointing-recovery scheme for Time Warp parallel simulation

This paper presents a checkpointing-recovery scheme for Time Warp parallel simulation. The scheme relies on a checkpointing protocol, namely mixed state saving, embedding both sparse and incremental state saving modes, and on a state recovery procedure embedding both forward and backward recovery modes. This scheme is a generalization of many previous solutions, which can be obtained as particular instances of it by selecting appropriate values for the checkpointing protocol parameters. We also present two regulating algorithms to adaptively tune the checkpointing protocol parameters, in order to make the protocol reacting to variable rollback behavior. A synthetic benchmark in several different configurations has been used for evaluating and comparing our scheme with previous solutions. The obtained data show that our solution allows faster execution and, in addition, keeps quite low the amount of memory used for recording state information;this allows the scheme to not adversely affect performance when memory is a critical resource. Scaled Static Analysis and IP Reuse for Out-of-Order parallel SystemC simulation

To preserve the SystemC semantics under parallel discrete event simulation, a compiler based approach statically analyzes race conditions in the design model. However, there are severe restrictions: the source code for the input design must be available in one file, which does not scale. This disables the use of intellectual property (IP) and hierarchical file structures. This paper scales the static analysis design flow to support separate files and IP reuse by introducing partial segment graph and partial port mapping abstractions and prevent IP security leakage. Experiments demonstrate the effective design flow and sustained speedup with parallel IPs.

The parallel and distributed simulation field has evolved and grown from its origins in the 1970s and 1980s and remains an active field of research to this day. A brief overview of research in the field is presented. Future research topics are explored including areas such as problem-driven simulation of large-scale systems and complex networks, exploitation of graphical processing unit hardware and cloud computing environments, predictive online simulation for system management and optimization, power and energy consumption in mobile platforms and data centers, and composition of heterogeneous simulations.

Partitioning WCN models for parallel simulation of radio resource management

parallel simulation techniques have been proposed as a possible solution to execution time and memory constraints often found in detailed simulations of Wireless Cellular Networks. However, partitioning represents a major challenge for models that encompass elements of radio propagation phenomena. This paper discusses the partitionings problem with respect to parallel discrete event simulation and we formulate an approach to study partitioning of a WCN model that includes radio propagation. Various options for a model of moderate size and where interference is calculated over the whole system are evaluated through experimentation and some limited mathematical analysis. Results indicate that radio spectrum based partitioning is preferable to geographically based partitionings for this model in many realistic scenarios. It is also noted that characteristics of the model differ sufficiently from other previously studied spatially explicit problems to reduce or even annihilate the effectiveness of some commonly used partitioning techniques.

A formal specification and verification framework for Time Warp-based parallel simulation

This paper describes a formal framework developed using the Prototype Verification System (PVS) to model and verify distributed simulation kernels based on the Time Warp paradigm. The intent is to provide a common formal base from which domain specific simulators can be modeled, verified, and developed. PVS constructs are developed to represent basic Time Warp constructs. Correctness conditions for Time Warp simulation are identified describing causal ordering of event processing and correct rollback processing. The PVS theorem prover and type-check condition system are then used to verify all correctness conditions. In addition, the paper discusses the framework's reusability and extensibility properties in support of specification and verification of Time Warp extensions and optimizations.

Large-scale dynamic transportation network simulation: A space-time-event parallel computing approach

This paper describes a computationally efficient parallel-computing framework for mesoscopic transportation simulation on large-scale networks. By introducing an overall data structure for mesoscopic dynamic transportation simulation, we discuss a set of implementation issues for enabling flexible parallel computing on a multi-core shared memory architecture. First, we embed an event-based simulation logic to implement a simplified kinematic wave model and reduce simulation overhead. Second, we present a spacetime -event computing framework to decompose simulation steps to reduce communication overhead in parallel execution and an OpenMP-based space-time-processor implementation method that is used to automate task partition tasks. According to the spatial and temporal attributes, various types of simulation events are mapped to independent logical processes that can concurrently execute their procedures while maintaining good load balance. We propose a synchronous space-parallel simulation strategy to dynamically assign the logical processes to different threads. The proposed method is then applied to simulate large-scale, real-world networks to examine the computational efficiency under different numbers of CPU threads. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the implemented parallel computing algorithm can significantly improve the computational efficiency and it can reach up to a speedup of 10 on a workstation with 32 computing threads. parallel simulation of parallel programs for large datasets has been shown to offer significant reduction in the execution time of many discrete event models. This paper describes the design and implementation of MPI-SIM, a library for the execution driven parallel simulation of task and data parallel programs. MPI-SIM can he used to predict the performance of existing programs written using MPI for message-passing, or written in UC, a data parallel language, compiled to use message-passing. The simulation models can be executed sequentially or in parallel. parallel execution of the models are synchronized using a set of asynchronous conservative protocols. This paper demonstrates how protocol performance is improved by the use of application-level, runtime analysis. The analysis targets the communication patterns of the application. We show the application-level analysis for message passing and data parallel languages. We present the validation and performance results for the simulator for a set of applications that include the NAS parallel Benchmark suite. The application-level optimization described in this paper yielded significant performance improvements in the simulation of parallel programs, and in some cases completely eliminated the synchronizations in the parallel execution of the simulation model.

SWiMNet: A scalable parallel simulation testbed for wireless and mobile networks

We present a framework, called SWiMNet, for parallel simulation of wireless and mobile PCS networks, which allows realistic and detailed modeling of mobility, call traffic, and PCS network deployment. SWiMNet is based upon event precomputation and a combination of optimistic and conservative synchronization mechanisms. event precomputation is the result of model independence within the global PCS network. Low percentage of blocked calls typical for PCS networks is exploited in the channel allocation simulation of precomputed events by means of an optimistic approach. Various experiments were conducted to study the performance and scalability of SWiMNet using a realistic mobility model and executed on a cluster of workstations. Experimental results indicate that our parallel simulation model yields good speedup, and significantly reduces the execution time compared to a sequential implementation. Finally, an analytical study of our PCS simulation model is also presented and compared with the experimental results. Our model is found to be consistent with the analytical study.
