We report here on a graph editor, ParaGraph, that supports massively parallel programming. It provides a flexible mechanism for the concise specification of families of annotated graphs, addressing the problems of user annotation and scale independent graph manipulation. ParaGraph currently serves as the basis for tools supporting communication abstractions in program specification and debugging. Its foundation in an extended form of aggregate rewriting graph grammars makes its adaptation to other parallel programming environments straightforward.

Enhanced monitoring in the GRADE programming environment by using OMIS

To provide high-level graphical support for developing message passing programs, an integrated programming environment (GRADE) is being developed. GRADE provides tools to construct, execute, debug, monitor and visualise message-passing based parallel programs. The paper describes the integration of GRADE and an OMIS compliant monitor system. OMIS is a recent specification of a universal on-line monitoring interface for parallel and distributed programs. The integration provides GRADE with a more flexible monitoring support and makes possible the simultaneous usage of debugging and visualisation tools. The paper specifically addresses the requirements imposed by GRADE on the on-line event tracing mechanisms, as well as their implementation and performance. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. OREGAMI - TOOLS FOR MAPPING parallel COMPUTATIONS TO parallel ARCHITECTURES

The OREGAMI project involves the design, implementation, and testing of algorithms for mapping parallel computations to message-passing parallel architectures. OREGAMI addresses the mapping problem by exploiting regularity and by allowing the user to guide and evaluate mapping decisions made by OREGAMI's efficient combinatorial mapping algorithms. OREGAMI's approach to mapping is based on a new graph theoretic model of parallel computation called the Temporal Communication Graph. The OREGAMI software tools include three components: (I ) LaRCS is a graph description language which allows the user to describe regularity in the communication topology as well as the temporal communication behavior (the pattern of message-passing over time). (2) MAPPER is our library of mapping algorithms which utilize information provided by LaRCS to perform contraction, embedding, and routing. (3) METRICS is an interactive graphics tool for display and analysis of mappings. This paper gives an overview of the OREGAMI project, the software tools, and OREGAMI's mapping algorithms.

EDPEPPS: an integrated environment for the parallel development life-cycle

This paper describes an environment for performance-oriented design of portable parallel software. The environment consists of a graphical design tool for building parallel algorithms, a state-of-the-art simulation engine, a CPU characterisation tool, a distributed debugging tool and a visualisation/replay tool. The environment is used to model a virtual machine composed of a cluster of heterogeneous workstations interconnected by a local area network. The simulation model used is modular and its components are interchangeable which allows easy re-configuration of the platform. The model is validated using experiments on two parallel Givens linear solver algorithms with average errors of about 8%. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The Parlab at Berkeley, UPCRC-Illinois, and the pervasive parallel laboratory at stanford are studying how to make parallel programming succeed given industry's recent shift to multicore computing. all three centers assume that future microprocessors will have hundreds of cores and are working on applications, programming environments, and architectures that will meet this challenge. this article briefly surveys the similarities and difference in their research.

An experiment in tool integration:: The DDBG parallel and distributed debugger

This paper discusses the development of a debugging tool for parallel programs showing how the requirements posed by high-level tools for parallel program development have influenced the design of the debugging system since its early stages of development. We concentrate our attention upon the interfacing of the debugger with other tools of a parallel software engineering environment, namely a graphical programming language and a testing and debugging tool. This is illustrated with the results of our experimentation with the design and implementation of DDBG, a debugger for the PVM environment. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Global arrays: A nonuniform memory access programming model for high-performance computers

Portability efficiency, and ease of coding are all important considerations in choosing the programming model for a scalable parallel application. The message-passing programming model is widely used because of its portability, yet some applications are too complex to code in it while also trying to maintain a balanced computation load and avoid redundant computations. The shared-memory programming model simplifies coding, but it is not portable and often provides little control over interprocessor data transfer costs. This paper describes an approach, called Global Arrays (GAs), that combines the better features of both other models, leading to both simple coding and efficient execution. The key concept of GAs is that they provide a portable interface through which each process in a MIMD parallel program can asynchronously access logical blocks of physically distributed matrices, with no need for explicit cooperation by other processes. We have implemented the GA library on a variety of computer systems, including the Intel Delta and Paragon, the IBM SP-1 and SP-2 (all message passers), the Kendall Square Research KSR-1/2 and the Convex SPP-1200 (nonuniform access shared-memory machines), the GRAY T3D (a globally addressable distributed-memory computer), and networks of UNIX workstations. We discuss the design and implementation of these libraries, report their performance, illustrate the use of GAs in the context of computational chemistry applications, and describe the use of a GA performance Visualization tool.

SkIE: A heterogeneous environment for HPC applications

Technological directions for innovative HPC software environments are discussed in this paper. We focus on industrial user requirements of heterogeneous multidisciplinary applications, performance portability, rapid prototyping and software reuse, integration and interoperability of standard tools. The Various issues are demonstrated with reference to the PQE2000 project and its programming environment Skeleton-based Integrated Environment (SkIE), SkIE includes a coordination language, SkIECL, allowing the designers to express, in a primitive and structured way, efficient combinations of data parallelism and task parallelism. The goal is achieving fast development and good efficiency for applications in different areas. Modules developed with standard languages and tools are encapsulated into SkIECL structures to form the global application. Performance models associated to the coordination language allow powerful optimizations to be introduced both at run time and at compile time without the direct intervention of the programmer. The paper also discusses the features of the SkIE environment related to debugging, performance analysis tools, visualization and graphical user interface. A discussion of the results achieved in some applications developed using the environment concludes the paper. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A programming language which supports the adequate specification of both parallel and sequential aspects of a program establishes the optimal basis for a parallel programming methodology. parallel languages that are entirely based on textual representations are not the best choice for describing paralellism. The main drawbacks stem from the fact that the sequential order of textual representations hides the parallel structure of a program. We propose a new programming methodology and language (called Meander), integrating textual and graphical descriptions, which is much better suited for parallel programming. parallel aspects are formulated by means of a specification graph which is annotated by sequential code. Program design, coding and visualization can then be performed in one single formalism which is suitable for all phases.

From design patterns to parallel architectural skeletons

The concept of design patterns has been extensively studied and applied in the context of object-oriented software design. Similar ideas are being explored in other areas of computing as well. Over the past several years, researchers have been experimenting with the feasibility of employing design-patterns related concepts in the parallel computing domain. In the past, several pattern-based systems have been developed with the intention to facilitate faster parallel application development through the use of preimplemented and reusable components that are based on frequently used parallel computing design patterns. However, most of these systems face several serious limitations such as limited flexibility, zero extensibility, and the ad hoe nature of their components. Lack of flexibility in a parallel programming system limits a programmer to using only the high-level components provided by the system. Lack of extensibility here refers to the fact that most of the existing pattern-based parallel programming systems come with a set of prebuilt patterns integrated into the system. However, the system provides no obvious way of increasing the repertoire of patterns when need arises. Also, most of these systems do not offer any generic view of a parallel computing pattern, a fact which may be at the root of several of their shortcomings. This research proposes a generic (i.e., pattern- and application-independent) model for realizing and using parallel design patterns. The term "parallel architectural skeleton" is used to represent the set of generic attributes associated with a pattern. The parallel Architectural Skeleton Model (PASM) is based on the message-passing paradigm, which makes it suitable for a LAN of workstations and PCs. The model is flexible as it allows the intermixing of high-level patterns with low-level message-passing primitives.
