There are many different ways to write parallel programs. We illustrate a variety of relevant language paradigms by presenting implementations of the Game of Life, a simple simulation motivated by living organisms. Featured paradigms include shared memory, GPU acceleration, message passing, and Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS).

The Japanese-french FP3C (Framework and programming for Post-Petascale Computing) Project ANR/JST-2010- JTIC-003 aims at studying the software technologies, languages and programming models on the road to exascale computing. The ability to efficiency exploit these future systems is challenging because of their ultra large-scale and highly hierarchical architecture with computational nodes including many-core processors and accelerators. We give an overview of some of the main issues explored within the project.

One promising approach to teaching parallel programming is to use high-level parallel programming languages, which handle some of the more mundane details of parallel programming and allow both instructors and students to focus on the main ideas. How does one go about selecting the language to use? We present short descriptions of a variety of languages (Chapel, Cilk, CUDA, Habanero Java, Hadoop, OpenACC, OpenMP and Scala), including our assessment of their strengths and weaknesses, plus some general considerations to keep in mind when teaching parallel programming.

A number of deterministic parallel programming models with strong safety guarantees are emerging, but similar support for non-deterministic algorithms, such as branch and bound search, remains an open question. We present a language together with a type and effect system that supports nondeterministic computations with a deterministic-by-default guarantee: nondeterminism must be explicitly requested via special parallel constructs (marked nd), and any deterministic construct that does not execute any nd construct has deterministic input-output behavior. Moreover, deterministic parallel constructs are always equivalent to a sequential composition of their constituent tasks, even if they enclose, or are enclosed by, nd constructs. Finally, in the execution of nd constructs, interference may occur only between pairs of accesses guarded by atomic statements, so then;are no data races, either between atomic statements and unguarded accesses (strong isolation) or between pairs of unguarded access (stronger than strong isolation alone). We enforce the guarantees at compile time with modular checking using novel,extensions to a previously described effect system. Our effect system extensions also enable the compiler to remove unnecessary transactional synchronization. We provide a static semantics, dynamic semantics, and a complete proof of soundness for the language;both with, and without the barrier removal feature. An experimental evaluation shows that our language can achieve good scalability for realistic parallel algorithms, and that the barrier removal techniques provide significant performance gains.

Towards a more efficient implementation of OpenMP for clusters via translation to global arrays

This paper discusses a novel approach to implementing OpenMP on clusters, Traditional approaches to do so rely on Software Distributed Shared Memory systems to handle shared data. We discuss these and then introduce an alternative approach that translates OpenMP to Global Arrays (GA), explaining the basic strategy. GA requires a data distribution. We do not expect the user to supply this, rather, we show how we perform data distribution and work distribution according to the user-supplied OpenMP static loop schedules. An inspector executor strategy is employed for irregular applications in order to gather information on accesses to potentially non-local data, group non-local data transfers and overlap communications with local computations. Furthermore, a new directive INVARIANT is proposed to provide information about the dynamic scope of data access patterns. This directive can help us generate efficient codes for irregular applications using the inspector executor approach, We also illustrate how to deal with some hard cases containing reshaping and strided accesses during the translation. Our experiments show promising results for the corresponding regular and irregular GA codes. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper introduces and discusses programming models for parallel processing and recent trends in the area of parallel programming. The paper discusses different parallel programming languages and tools that reflect various parallel computation models. These language differ in expressiveness, portability and performance. Software design and implementation largely varies by using different languages that make the programmer task easy or complex. We describe here the design goals and the main issues of parallel programming models and languages belonging to the following categories: shared-space based languages, message-based languages, parallel toolkits, data-parallel languages, parallel declarative languages, parallel object-oriented languages, and parallel composition-based languages. Tools and languages such as HPF, Linda, Java, OpenMP, PVM, MPI, parallel C+ +, Sisal, Orca, Mentat, SkieCL, BSP and others are described in some detail. Their main features for design and implementation of high performance applications are discussed. Finally, we outline directions of research and development in the parallel programming area with a special attention to novel approaches based on high-level programming structures that make transparent to the users the architectural details of parallel computing machines.

The paper presents a new parallel language, mpC, designed specially for programming high-performance computations on heterogeneous networks of computers, as well as its supportive programming environment. The main idea underlying mpC is that an mpC application explicitly defines an abstract network and distributes data, computations and communications over the network, The mpC programming environment uses, at run time, this information as well as information on any real executing network in order to map the application to the real network in such a way that ensures the efficient execution of the application on this real network. Experience of using mpC for solving both regular and irregular real-life problems on networks of heterogeneous computers is also presented. Copyright (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Finding, expressing and managing parallelism in programs executed on clusters of workstations

The goal of this paper to identify and discuss the basic issues of and solutions to parallel processing on clusters of workstations (COWs). Firstly, identification and expressing parallelism in application programs are discussed. The following approaches to finding and expressing parallelism are characterized: parallel programming languages, parallel programming tools, sequential programming supported by distributed shared memory (DSM), and parallelising compilers. Secondly, efficient management of available parallelism is discussed. As parallel execution requires an efficient management of processes and computational resources, a parallel execution environment proposed here is to be built based on a distributed operating system. This system, in order to allow parallel programs to achieve high performance and transparency, should provide services such as global scheduling, process migration, local and remote process creation, computation coordination, group communication and distributed shared memory.
