A partial element equivalent circuit-metamodel combination for fast tolerance analysis of electromagnetic systems

In this letter, we propose a combination of the partial element equivalent circuit method with metamodelling in order to achieve fast tolerance analysis of electromagnetic systems. The proposed model combination can be interpreted as a multifidelity modeling approach. This technique is inspired by the multilevel Monte Carlo method and provides great benefits in terms of computational resources.

The partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method is a well recognized integral-equation (IE) technique to solve Maxwell's equations. Similarly to the method of moments (MoM), the electromagnetic (EM) interactions between currents and between charges are described in terms of integrals. In contrast to the standard MoM, the PEEC method keeps the electric and magnetic coupling phenomena separate, which leads to different interaction integrals to be computed. These integrals admit simplified solutions for the case of the static free-space Green's function and orthogonal geometries but their applicability is limited to electrically small problems only. When the full-wave free-space Green's function is considered, the integrals are typically computed in the frequency domain (FD) by resorting to Gaussian quadrature schemes. The accuracy and efficiency of such schemes is a delicate issue. Therefore, recent works have investigated the possibility of applying the Cagniard-DeHoop (CdH) technique to calculate the interaction integrals for zero-thickness elementary domains. In this paper, we close the loop and shall apply the CdH technique to calculate the partial-inductance between two elementary bricks as prescribed by the PEEC technique exactly in the time domain (TD). The analytical approach is demonstrated on the interaction between two bricks as it occurs in the modeling of the magnetic field coupling between volumetric currents. The accuracy of the proposed approach is (successfully) tested for two representative cases.

Over the last twenty years, the evolution of communications has extended the systems' operating frequency range to the tens of GHz. In this framework, time domain integral equation-based (TDIE) methods for antenna modeling have gained increasing interest. Among them, the partial elements equivalent circuit (PEEC) method turns out to be attractive for its capability to provide compact circuit models. Similarly to other integral equation-based methods, like the method of moments (MoM) in the time domain (TD), the PEEC method can suffer from late-time instabilities. This work shows that a rigorous computation of the time-dependent partial elements leads to an improved TD formulation of the PEEC method that exhibits better behavior at high frequencies. This is the fundamental premise for having more stable results, preventing the late-time instabilities from appearing in the time domain.

Steady state solution of NFC model with nonlinear load using PEEC

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show that the computation of time-periodic signals for coupled antenna-circuit problems can be substantially accelerated by means of the single shooting method. This allows an efficient analysis of nonlinearly loaded coupled loop antennas for near field communication (NFC) applications. Design/methodology/approach For the modelling of electrically small coupled field-circuit problems, the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method shows to be very efficient. For analysing the circuit-like description of the coupled problem, this paper developed a generalised modified nodal analysis (MNA) and applied it to specific NFC problems. Findings It is shown that the periodic steady state (PSS) solution of the resulting differential-algebraic system can be computed very time efficiently by the single shooting method. A speedup of roughly 114 to conventional transient approaches can be achieved. Practical implications The proposed approach appears to be an efficient alternative for the computation of time PSS solutions for nonlinear circuit problems coupled with discretised conductive structures, where the homogeneous solution is not of interest. Originality/value The present paper explores the implementation and application of the shooting method for nonlinearly loaded coupled antenna-circuit problems based on the PEEC method and shows the efficiency of this approach.

Time-domain solutions of Maxwell's equations through integral equation methods are occasionally affected by inaccuracies and late-time instabilities which may restrict their use. In this work, we show that, in the framework of the partial element equivalent circuit method, a more rigorous computation of the elementary electromagnetic interactions, in the form of partial elements, guarantees more accurate results which result in more stable time domain models.

Previous work has shown that real-time electromagnetic models can be used to enable an augmented reality-based visualisation of the magnetic field around a single wire over a ground plane. However, as model complexity is increased, the memory usage and simulation times increase considerably, to the point that it would be impossible to use in a real-time visualisation. In this paper, previous efforts are substantially improved by incorporating the Fast Multipole formulation of the partial element equivalent circuit method alongside the PRIMA model order reduction algorithm. A significantly larger model with 11156 ODEs has been simulated in real-time for smooth augmented reality visualisations. Experimental measurements are used to validate the accuracy of the simulation models used.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are an emerging transmission technology for application to wireless communications. Their accurate modeling is crucial for an effective design. In this work, a time domain modeling is proposed that comprises two steps: first the impulse response of the system is computed using the partial element equivalent circuit method thus including all the couplings among the elements of the RIS, then the communication channel is studied through a convolution-based solver in the time domain.

An innovative method is presented that takes a real-time video capture of a circuit and renders the electromagnetic field around it. A real-time electromagnetic simulation incorporating the PRIMA model-order-reduction algorithm is implemented in the Unity game engine. This model takes measurable quantities such as terminal current and predicts magnetic field and current distributions which are rendered onto the video stream in real-time. The system dynamically simulates a model with 5430 ODEs in real-time for smooth augmented reality visualisations of frequency components up to 10 kHz.

Near Field Communication (NFC) techniques are widely used within everyday activities, e.g., contactless payment systems or authentication. Regardless of the application typically the requirements on the antenna structure are manifold. Frequently limitations in the available space make the antenna design quite challenging especially if other conductive structures are close to the NFC antenna. In the present paper we propose to synthesize the geometry of proximity integrated circuit card (PICC) antennas according to class 6 in the presence of nearby metallic structures. The optimization relies on the differential evolution strategy. The computation of the forward problem is based on the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method.

Wireless communication technologies such as Near Field Communication (NFC) found its way into our everyday life. The antenna structures used in such systems have to comply with several standards to achieve all requirements defined for the specific application. However, in practice there are scenarios for such antennas which are not considered in standards or design guides, but mainly influence the antenna behavior. In the present paper the synthesis of an antenna used for NFC-cards in a contactless payment system under multi-card condition is presented. The optimization relies on the differential evolution (DE) strategy. The computation of the forward problem is based on the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method.
