The results of a previous study (Deruelle & de Schonen, 1991) suggested that in 4- to 10-month-old infants, the right hemisphere (RH) is unable to process a very schematic face component by component, whereas the left hemisphere (LH) is able to process components in this way. These results suggested that the LH may have an advantage in processing of ''good form'' patterns, and the RH may have an advantage in processing the location of the components forming patterns of this kind. The aim of this study was to test this assumption. Thirty-two 4- to 10-month-old infants were tested in a pattern recognition task with a separate visual field presentation technique. The results confirmed that different visual pattern processing modes are present early in life, and that they are controlled asymmetrically.

We use an excitable medium for dynamic pattern processing. For this purpose the autowave structures arising from the light-sensitive Belouzov-Zhabotinsky reaction could serve as attractors. The dynamics is simulated as a non-linear network with local interaction in terms of cellular automata. With the help of a set of threshold electrodes the actual state is projected into a space of bytes. At the end of the adaptation procedure for the parameters we achieved the ability of this system for pattern recognition. Dynamic and statis pattern processing are compared with respect to information capacity and adaptation time.

Multiple functions of GABA_A and GABA_B receptors during pattern processing in the zebrafish olfactory bulb

gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic synapses are thought to play pivotal roles in the processing of activity patterns in the olfactory bulb (OB), but their functions have been difficult to study during odor responses in the intact system. We pharmacologically manipulated GABA(A) and GABA(B) receptors in the OB of zebrafish and analysed the effects on odor responses of the output neurons, the mitral cells (MCs), by electrophysiological recordings and temporally deconvolved two-photon Ca(2+) imaging. The blockade of GABA(B) receptors enhanced presynaptic Ca(2+) influx into afferent axon terminals, and changed the amplitude and time course of a subset of MC responses, indicating that GABA(B) receptors have a modulatory influence on OB output activity. The blockade of GABA(A) receptors induced epileptiform firing, enhanced excitatory responses and abolished fast oscillations in the local field potential. Moreover, the topological reorganization and decorrelation of MC activity patterns during the initial phase of the response was perturbed. These results indicate that GABA(A) receptor-containing circuits participate in the balance of excitation and inhibition, the regulation of total OB output activity, the synchronization of odor-dependent neuronal ensembles, and the reorganization of odor-encoding activity patterns. GABA(A) and GABA(B) receptors are therefore differentially involved in multiple functions of neuronal circuits in the OB.

A MULTILEVEL APPROACH TO pattern processing

This paper presents a methodology for describing multilevel pattern processing systems. It is suggested that any pattern processor can be adequately described in terms of multiple hierarchies of two types of fundamental mechanism: (1) a process which performs the pattern recognition functions of analysis and synthesis and (2) a process which performs the syntactic functions of parsing and generation. A computer implementation of these principles is outlined which enables a range of systems to be configured. Examples of speech and non-speech pattern processing are presented.

Ultrasonic wave propagation simulation serves in this paper as a conceptual approach to nondestructive testing of inherent material properties. The suggested method attempts to identify possible defects and to reduce the uncertainty of the system and thus contribute to the safety. The nontraditional Cellular Automata computational scheme was adopted for both the wave propagation solution and pattern processing.

We want to reconstruct equivalent sources on a âreconstruction surfaceâ?Î£R that encloses a volume Î© where the equipment under test (EUT) lies; the EUT encompasses the antenna(s) and possible neighboring scatterers, as need in the application of interest. We employ the equivalence theorem to represent the fields outside the reconstruction surface Î£R and on it. Note that it is typically desirable or necessary to place this surface not on metals (even when the antenna is metallic), and the employed technique must account for this more general case. These equivalent sources are next computed under the stipulation that they radiate the same fields as measured on a given measurement surface Î£M. The formulation is based on a new approach presented in, which employs two integral equations instead of the usual single equation. It has been shown that unlike the standard approach in the literature (e.g.) this approach yields Love's currents on the surface (that is, fields) and has an added stability that, under proper application, does not require external (low-pass) regularization.

A newly developed character recognition method is proposed that can be applied to low quality printed documents. In this method, the cooperation of pattern processing with neural networks and symbolic processing with knowledge of language is adopted. If errors occur at one part;another part detects it and sends the error information to all parts. After successive iterations until no error is detected, a recognition result is obtained. A character recognition of 98.4 percent is obtained with this method. This rate is 2.8 percent higher than the result of a conventional method with no information exchange among processing parts.

Recent physiological findings are reviewed and synthesized into a model of shape processing and object recognition. Gestalt laws (e.g. good continuation, closure) and 'non-accidental' image properties (e.g. colinear terminating lines) are resolved in prestriate visual cortex (areas V2 and V3) to support the extraction of 2D shape boundaries. processing of shape continues along a ventral route through inferior temporal (IT) cortex where a vast catalogue of 2D shape primitives is established. Each catalogue entry is size-specific (+/- 0.5 log scale unit) and orientation-specific (+/- 45), but can generalize over position (+/- 150 degree2). Several shape components are used to activate representations of the approximate appearance of one object type at one view, orientation and size. Subsequent generalization, first over orientation and size, then over view, and finally over object sub-component, is achieved in the anterior temporal cortex by combining descriptions of the same object from different orientations and views, through associative learning. This scheme provides a route to 3D object recognition through 2D shape description and reduces the problem of perceptual invariance to a series of independent analyses with an associative link established between the outputs. The system relies on parallel processing with computations performed in a series of hierarchical steps with relatively simple operations at each stage.

Deep Learning-Based Approach for Detecting Trajectory Modifications of Cassini-Huygens Spacecraft

There were necessary trajectory modifications of Cassini spacecraft during its last 14 years movement cycle of the interplanetary research project. In the scale 1.3 hour of signal propagation time and 1.4-billion-kilometer size of Earth-Cassini channel, complex event detection in the orbit modifications requires special investigation and analysis of the collected big data. The technologies for space exploration warrant a high standard of nuanced and detailed research. The Cassini mission has accumulated quite huge volumes of science records. This generated a curiosity derives mainly from a need to use machine learning to analyze deep space missions. For energy saving considerations, the communication between the Earth and Cassini was executed in non-periodic mode. This paper provides a sophisticated in-depth learning approach for detecting Cassini spacecraft trajectory modifications in post-processing mode. The proposed model utilizes the ability of Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks for drawing out useful data and learning the time series inner data pattern, along with the forcefulness of LSTM layers for distinguishing dependencies among the long-short term. Our research study exploited the statistical rates, Matthews correlation coefficient, and F1 score to evaluate our models. We carried out multiple tests and evaluated the provided approach against several advanced models. The preparatory analysis showed that exploiting the LSTM layer provides a notable boost in rising the detection process performance. The proposed model achieved a number of 232 trajectory modification detections with 99.98% accuracy among the last 13.35 years of the Cassini spacecraft life.

New algorithm for efficient pattern recall using a static threshold with the Steinbuch Lernmatrix

An associative memory is a binary relationship between inputs and outputs, which is stored in an M matrix. The fundamental purpose of an associative memory is to recover correct output patterns from input patterns, which can be altered by additive, subtractive or combined noise. The Steinbuch Lernmatrix was the first associative memory developed in 1961, and is used as a pattern recognition classifier. However, a misclassification problem is presented when crossbar saturation occurs. A new algorithm that corrects the misclassification in the Lernmatrix is proposed in this work. The results of crossbar saturation with fundamental patterns demonstrate a better performance of pattern recalling using the new algorithm. Experiments with real data show a more efficient classifier when the algorithm is introduced in the original Lernmatrix. Therefore, the thresholded Lernmatrix memory emerges as a suitable and alternative classifier to be used in the developing pattern processing field.
