Wind power prediction, especially short-term forecasting is very significant for the security, stability and economy of power grid. Besides, it plays an important role in a micro-grid for load balancing and capacity planning. Precise prediction of wind power of micro-grid is a complex problem due to its strong randomness and little training data. Compared with traditional methods, Support Vector Machine (SVM) based on Structure Risk Minimization principle, plays a better performance on nonlinear and small sample problems. The method of SVM for short-term wind power prediction is proposed in this paper. An improved pattern search algorithm, which takes use of Lagrange interpolation to obtain the initial points, is used to optimize the parameters of SVM prediction model. The simulation results indicate that the method proposed in this paper can realize short-term wind speed prediction effectively. This paper presents some promising patents on prediction of wind power.

In this study the optimal operation of micro-CHP systems producing electricity and heat for a single-family house situated in Italy is addressed considering the effects of heat dissipation relative to thermal storage systems. Three different prime movers have been analyzed separately, and for each of them the operation scheduling that maximizes the revenues for the energy cogeneration with respect to the separate generation has been evaluated by means of an optimization algorithm.

This paper is aimed at presenting two methods on the basis of pattern search and genetic algorithms to detect and estimate damage in plates using the modal data of a damaged plate. The proposed methods determine the damages of plate structures using optimization of an objective function by pattern search and genetic algorithms. These methods have been applied to two numerical examples, namely four-fixed supported and cantilever plates with and without noise in the modal data and containing one or several damages. The obtained results clearly reveal that the proposed methods can be viewed as a powerful and reliable method for structural damage detection in plates using the modal data.

A Stackelberg single-period supply chain inventory model with weighted possibilistic mean values under fuzzy environment

This paper considers a single-period product inventory control in a distributed supply chain, which is composed of one manufacturer and one retailer and operates in the environment of uncertain market demand. A Stackelberg model with fuzzy demand is first developed, with using a L-R fuzzy number with a general membership function to depict the fuzzy market demand, and through adopting the weighted possibilistic mean value method to rank the retailer and the manufacturer's fuzzy profits, the risk preference of decision maker is also taken into consideration in the model. A special case where the market demand is assumed to be a triangular fuzzy number is further considered, and Genetic algorithm and pattern search algorithm are adopted to obtain the optimal solutions of the Stackelberg model. At last, numerical examples are used to illustrate the proposed model and sensitivity analyses are provided to get managerial implications. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Fiber optic active alignment method based on a pattern search algorithm

Automation of fiber optic alignment is critical to reduce the cost of fiber optic devices packaging and ensure the quality of the products. The conventional fiber optic alignment method based on a hill-climbing algorithm is usually time consuming and it often fails to search the optimal alignment position. The reason is that the hill-climbing algorithm is a 1-D method, while multiple degrees of freedom (DOF) adjustments are needed in fiber optic alignment processes. The hill-climbing algorithm will be subject to noise because of intercoupling among axes. Thus, application of the pattern search algorithm in fiber optic alignment automation is developed in this work. The pattern search algorithm can adjust misalignments on multiple axial directions simultaneously. The intercoupling problem can be solved, and then the potential risk of missing the real peak can be avoided. Comparison of the simulation and experimental results between the pattern search and the hill-climbing algorithm is presented. Simulation results indicate that the pattern search algorithm converges nine times faster than the hill-climbing algorithm;it converges to the maximum coupling efficiency within eight iterations for the five degrees of freedom alignment between the laser diode and the single mode fiber. The experimental results demonstrate that the average time for locating the optimal coupling position in the x-y plane using the pattern search algorithm is reduced compared to the conventional hill-climbing algorithm;and the global convergence of the pattern search algorithm is much better than that of the hill-climbing algorithm. GMRVV_m-SVR model for financial time series forecasting

The complex model GMRVV(m)-SVR has been adopted to predict financial time series with such characteristics as small sample size, poor information, non-stationary, high noise and non-linearity. In order to construct GMRVV(m)-SVR, the m-root grey model with revised verge value (GMRVV(m)) has been introduced and modified by support vector regression based on the calculation of the residual error sequence between predicted values and original data. Due to the recent data points providing more information than distant data points, more importance has been attached to the punishment parameter C of recent data points in support vector regression. Simultaneously, the parameter epsilon in epsilon-insensitive loss function has been determined according to smoothing overshooting. pattern search (PS) algorithm has been carried out to tune free parameters. A real experimental result shows that the complex model can achieve comparative accurate prediction as well as smoothing overshooting in financial time series prediction. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The electromechanical coupled dynamic model of the stator of the bar-type ultrasonic motor is derived based on the finite element method. The dynamical behavior of the stator is analyzed via this model and the theoretical result agrees with the experimental result of the stator of the prototype motor very well. Both the structural design principles and the approaches to meet the requirements for the mode of the stator are discussed. Based on the pattern search algorithm, an optimal model to meet the design requirements is established. The numerical simulation results show that this optimal model is effective for the structural design of the stator. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Essential characteristics of foreign suppliers are identified that should be considered in the supplier selection process to control supply chain disruption risk in the manufacturer's assembly operation. Since that the tangible and intangible characteristics are integrated in the supplier-ranking procedure and the multi-criteria evaluation system is introduced while the weight of each criteria may not be known in advance, in this paper, the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation(FCE) is employed to settle the prompt break skip illogicality of the membership degree of supplier' performance to a reliability level, and the pattern search algorithm (PSA) is imposed to figure out the significant weights to make full use of existing well-known benchmark supplier selected by consultants and manufacturer's executives in group-decision rather than completely subjective preferring determination by persons. A case study is presented in which a manufacturer ranks its current foreign supplier against two other potentials based on criterions of supply reliability. The outcome illustrates the practicality of the pattern search weighted FCE method's application in the selection strategy of foreign business partners.

Real-time P-H curve CNC interpolators for high speed cornering

In this paper, real-time Pythagorean hodograph (P-H) curve CNC interpolators are used for high speed corner machining. There are large contouring errors around sharp corners when low-bandwidth servo controllers (such as P-PI control) are used. In order to decrease the amount of the cornering errors, an improved interpolation method is proposed. The first deceleration phase of motion and the over-corner P-H curve constructed for regions with sharp corners are devised by quadratic and constant velocity interpolation algorithms, respectively. The geometric parameters of the over-corner P-H curve and the feed rate along the modified tool path are computed by pattern search algorithm in order to reduce the maximum cornering error. The proposed interpolation algorithm is implemented for symmetrical and unsymmetrical corners. The results of simulation, such as the cornering error and the total cornering time, are compared with previously published methods. It has been observed that the developed over-corner P-H approach can substantially reduce the amount of cornering error.
