Wind power prediction, especially short-term forecasting is very significant for the security, stability and economy of power grid. Besides, it plays an important role in a micro-grid for load balancing and capacity planning. Precise prediction of wind power of micro-grid is a complex problem due to its strong randomness and little training data. Compared with traditional methods, Support Vector Machine (SVM) based on Structure Risk Minimization principle, plays a better performance on nonlinear and small sample problems. The method of SVM for short-term wind power prediction is proposed in this paper. An improved pattern search algorithm, which takes use of Lagrange interpolation to obtain the initial points, is used to optimize the parameters of SVM prediction model. The simulation results indicate that the method proposed in this paper can realize short-term wind speed prediction effectively. This paper presents some promising patents on prediction of wind power.

In this paper, we present a day-ahead optimal scheduling for reactive power of PV inverters and tap position of on-load tap changer (OLTC) in distribution network. We used a pattern search optimization algorithm based on the forecasted load demand and PVs active power generation. While the objective is to minimize the node voltage deviation and network losses, the maximum number of tap operation is maintained in a predefined limit. A modified IEEE 34 node test feeder is used to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed scheduling approach. A stochastic analysis is presented to show the performance of the proposed optimal scheduling in the presence of forecast errors of the PV generation and load demand.

The electromechanical coupled dynamic model of the stator of the bar-type ultrasonic motor is derived based on the finite element method. The dynamical behavior of the stator is analyzed via this model and the theoretical result agrees with the experimental result-of the stator of the prototype motor very well. Both the structural design principles and the approaches to meet the requirements for the mode of the stator are discussed. Based on the pattern search algorithm, an optimal model to meet the design requirements is established. The numerical simulation results show that this optimal model is effective for the structural design of the stator.

In this study the optimal operation of micro-CHP systems producing electricity and heat for a single-family house situated in Italy is addressed considering the effects of heat dissipation relative to thermal storage systems. Three different prime movers have been analyzed separately, and for each of them the operation scheduling that maximizes the revenues for the energy cogeneration with respect to the separate generation has been evaluated by means of an optimization algorithm.

This study addresses the challenges in accurately estimating photovoltaic (PV) parameters for solar energy applications by enhancing parameter extraction processes to improve the efficiency of PV models. An information gap in PV solar cell and module parameters provided by vendors obstructs accurate simulation. Traditional numerical techniques face limitations in accurately solving complex nonlinear optimization problems. As a solution, metaheuristic algorithms, specifically the mountain gazelle optimizer, are proposed. To overcome limitations of the mountain gazelle optimizer, a pattern search algorithm is integrated for a more robust global and local search. Rigorous testing demonstrates superior performance in achieving lower best values and tighter standard deviations compared to existing algorithms, making it a promising and efficient optimizer for accurate parameter estimation in various solar cell and module models, including the R.T.C. France silicon solar cell and Photowatt-PWP201 PV module. The proposed optimizer excels in estimating parameters for both single diode, double diode, and PV module models, outperforming state-of-the-art algorithms and showcasing its potential for reliable and precise optimization in solar cell modeling applications.

In this study, the ideal cycles with finite heat capacity rates is investigated theoretically to maximize power generation using a sequential Carnot cycle model. Although the Carnot efficiency is important, it is limited to evaluating only in terms of heat source/sink temperatures. For the actual heat engine, maximization of power generation is more important than cycle thermal efficiency when utilizing low-grade heat sources such as a waste heat. In this study, power generation optimization is numerically simulated under the fixed conditions of heat source temperatures, heat source flow rate and heat sink temperature. Effect by two design variables, compressor exit temperature and evaporator size ratio, were evaluated during cycle optimization. The optimization was performed using the pattern search algorithm (PSA) under a given thermal capacitance rate ratios and size of heat exchanger (UA) conditions. As a result, designing compressor exit temperature for maximizing the heat received from heat sources does not always maximize the power, but the higher the UA makes the optimum temperature lower, and the power output higher. These idealistic approaches can be useful in designing of cycle where the power maximization is crucial.

Computer simulation of cardiac electrophysiology is now considered a powerful tool for exploring the causes of cardiac arrhythmias Cardiac electric propagation has been studied using the monodomain model to describe wave propagation of action potential in the heart. The governing nonlinear reaction-diffusion partial differential equation is solved with the semi-implicit (implicit-explicit) method that does not have the stability limit of the explicit time-stepping scheme. Both first order and second order semi-implicit techniques for temporal discretization are considered in this paper. Second order finite difference technique is used to discretize the spatial derivatives. An explicit finite difference scheme with 512X512 nodes and 0.1 us time step is used as the benchmark for error calculation. APPSPACK, a parallel pattern search optimization software, is used to obtain the optimal semi-implicit parameters that give the lowest root-meansquare error. Results are presented for the semi-implicit techniques with or without the operator split or protective zone method. They demonstrate that the optimized second order semi-implicit method gives the best overall performance.

Flame detection by heat from the infrared spectrum: Optimization and sensitivity analysis

Accurate detection of unwanted fires at their early stage is crucial for efficient mitigation and loss prevention. Moreover, the detection strategy must avoid false alarms and the associated disruptions in workplaces. Thermal radiation-based flame detection is the fastest detection method and is commonly used in critical industrial spaces, such as air hangars and petroleum manufacturing and storage. The main challenge is distinguishing the radiation of flames from other sources, e.g., hot objects or the Sun. The principles of radiation-based flame detection have been known for a long time, but open data and worked-out feasibility studies are rare. This work takes advantage of the recent advances in experimental and numerical methods of characterizing the infrared spectra. Combining high-resolution spectra from flames and blackbody emitters with virtual low-pass filters allows us to simulate the response of a hypothetical sensor. To maximize the difference between flame and blackbody responses, we use a pattern search algorithm to find optimal filtering wavelengths for two different detection strategies based on three or four optical low-pass filters. The optimal wavelengths are reported along with the sensitivity of the detection signal to the filter non-ideality. Our results give guidelines for design of efficient and highly selective flame-radiation-based fire detection sensors.

Novel load frequency control scheme for hybrid power systems employing interline power flow controller and redox flow battery

This article proposes a novel load frequency control (LFC) scheme for hybrid power systems (HPS) in the presence of Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC) and redox flow battery (RFB). Due to the vagueness nature of solar energy and wind energy sources present in the HPS, the LFC problem is a critical task in HPS. For this study, a fuzzy proportional integral derivative (FPID) controller with hybrid salp swarm algorithm and pattern search algorithm (hSSA-PS) is used to optimize the controller parameter of the HPS system under random and stochastic environments. The usefulness of the proposed hSSA-PS algorithm is established over salp swarm algorithm (SSA), genetic algorithm (GA) and Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms. The performance of the system under study is evaluated with/without the presence of IPFC and RFB. It is observed that system performance is improved with the presence of an IPFC controller and RFB. The robustness of the proposed controller is justified by conducting sensitivity analysis. It is noticed that in presence of the proposed FPID controller the reduction in ITAE/IAE/ISE values is 92.18%, 90.84 and 98.52% as compared to PID controller and 31.42%, 86.90% and 90% as compared to PID controller in the occurrence of IPFC and RFB under stochastic environment. The robustness of the proposed controller is justified by conducting a sensitivity analysis. Also, the outperformance of the suggested controller is contrasted with some advanced controllers reported in some recent papers.

We propose an algorithm which combines multi-directional search (MDS) with nonsmooth techniques such as bundling to solve several difficult synthesis problems in automatic control. Applications include static and fixed-order output feedback controller design, simultaneous stabilization, H2/H ∞ synthesis to cite just a few. We show in which way direct search techniques may be safeguarded by nonsmooth oracles in order to maintain convergence certificates in the presence of nonsmoothness. Our numerical testing includes numerous benchmark examples. For instance, our algorithm needs 0.41 seconds to compute a static output feedback stabilizing controller for the Boeing 767 flutter benchmark problem (E.J. Davison, 1990), a system with 55 states.
