The generation of oscillations in a biological conductance-based single-neuron model and three isolated network-based models is studied using computer simulation. The synchronization of oscillations in a linear chain of locally coupled neural oscillators is investigated. Simulation results for linear chains employing four oscillator models are presented and their speed of synchronization is compared. A two-dimensional oscillator network that attains feature-linking and pattern segmentation through temporal correlations among neural signals is presented. The network is simulated numerically for three oscillator models and the results are compared.

Quantifying gait parameters and ambulatory monitoring of changes in these parameters have become increasingly important in epidemiological and clinical studies. Using high-density accelerometry measurements, we propose adaptive empirical pattern transformation (ADEPT), a fast, scalable, and accurate method for segmentation of individual walking strides. ADEPT computes the covariance between a scaled and translated pattern function and the data, an idea similar to the continuous wavelet transform. The difference is that ADEPT uses a data-based pattern function, allows multiple pattern functions, can use other distances instead of the covariance, and the pattern function is not required to satisfy the wavelet admissibility condition. Compared to many existing approaches, ADEPT is designed to work with data collected at various body locations and is invariant to the direction of accelerometer axes relative to body orientation. The method is applied to and validated on accelerometry data collected during a 450-m outdoor walk of 32 study participants wearing accelerometers on the wrist, hip, and both ankles. Additionally, all scripts and data needed to reproduce presented results are included in supplementary material available at Biostatistics online.

A comparison of time-use behavior in metropolitan areas using pattern recognition techniques

A better understanding of the connection of urban forms and travel behavior is critical to the operation of the existing and the design of the future transportation infrastructure. A comprehensive analysis of travel behavior across different regions would capture the underlying dependency among time-use behavior, the built environment, and the demographics of travelers. This paper introduces a method to measure the similarity of activity chains in different regions based on pattern segmentation and recognition. Travel behavior of residents of five different urban regions in the United States are compared: New York City, Los Angeles County, Chicago, San Francisco, and Atlanta. A total of 80,894 activity patterns is analyzed to address three goals: (1) to find a set of representative activity patterns for the residents of each region;(2) to analyze the dissimilarities/similarities in the activity patterns within and between the regions;and (3) to develop econometric models to assess and compare the role of demographic attributes on time use behavior. The outcome of the analysis supports and highlights the differences between study areas.

Investigating local orientation methods to segment microstructure with 3D solid texture

This study investigates local orientation-based approaches to the complex problem of pattern segmentation in three-dimensional (3D) texture image. The current problem focuses on the extraction of so-called lamellar colonies in titanium alloy, which, from the materials science and engineering point of view, are microstructural features that play a fundamental role on crack propagation and bifurcation during mechanical loading. Methods based on local orientation estimation extend the notion of using local gradient to reveal variation of semi-planar pattern orientation in the 3D image. The study introduces a computational approach that accelerates the calculation of the eigenvectors from the local matrices of inertia of all voxels composing the 3D image. Then different paths are proposed to segment colonies or inter-colony boundaries, i.e. polar orientation map and minimum scalar product map, in order to delimitate regions of similar orientations. The investigated segmentation methods have been compared with other methods that are mainly based on the popular solution of filter banks. Tests, which have been performed on both synthetic and real 3D images, show that the proposed local orientation-based methods better delineate object boundaries than the counterparts.

This paper presents a method for segmenting binary patterns into seven mutually exclusive categories: core, islet, loop, bridge, perforation, edge, and branch. This is achieved by applying a series of morphological transformations such as erosions, geodesic dilations, reconstruction by dilation, anchored skeletonisation, etc. The proposed method depends on a single parameter only and can be used for characterising binary patterns with emphasis on connections between their parts as measured at varying analysis scales. This is illustrated on two examples related to land cover maps and circuit board defect detection. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Separating figures, mathematical formulas and Japanese text from free handwriting in mixed online documents

This paper describes a method for separating online handwritten patterns into Japanese text, figures and mathematical formulas. Today, Tablet PCs and electronic whiteboards provide much larger writing area for pen interfaces unlike PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants), through which users can easily input text, write mathematical formulas and draw figures on the screen. The fact that these objects can be written by a single pen (marker) without switching the device, mode, software or whatever else, and without any writing restrictions such as grids or boxes is one of the most important benefits of the pen interfaces. However, the task of segmenting these objects is challenging. To address this issue, we have applied a probabilistic model employing stroke features, stroke crossings and stroke densities. Further, we partially apply the approach of segmentation by recognition. Although the current recognizer for formulas is not a true recognizer, we have achieved about 81% correct segmentation for all the strokes when applied to our newly prepared database of mixed patterns. This method has been compared with a neural-network. The results show that our method is generally better but less effective in distinguishing figures from other components.

A Heuristic-adaptive procedure for segmentation of time patterns

This paper treats segmentation of time patterns as a heuristic search problem. segmentation is formulated in terms of image restoration. An observed pattern, which is the stochastically deformed image of a pure image consisting of a number of regimes, is to be segmented to recover the regimed structure. Standard statistical decision methods are not very useful here because of the computational difficulties involved. The search process described here consists of application of a sequence of heuristic-adaptive operators. Each operator is designed to detect certain flaws in previous segmentations and make modifications accordingly. The search path thus generated ends in a loop from among which the final solution is chosen by an evaluating function. Results of experiments with simulated data are presented and discussed. © 1975 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

Femtosecond laser-induced periodic oxidization of titanium film: Structural colors both in reflection and transmission mode

This study reported on the fabrication of nanoripples via femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface oxidation on titanium film, which can work both for the structural colors in reflection mode and transmission mode. The periods and heights of nanoripples were obtained under different pulse energies and scanning speeds. To obtain the structural colors in the transmission mode, the height of the nanoripples was above 175 nm. The experimental results showed that the spectral changes in the reflection mode and transmission mode were consistent, which conformed to the principle of grating diffraction. Moreover, it could be seen that the colors were very sensitive to the angles. The ripples orientation affected the intensity of the color, while the viewing angle and the incident angle affected the type of the color. According to the spectral characteristics of structural colors, the display and encryption of information were realized. On this basis, we used the method of pattern segmentation to achieve the encryption and decryption of information on the condition that the overall pattern was not missing. This study provided a new idea to realize the color display, information security, and anti-counterfeiting on both sides of the sample.

Machine vision methodology for inkjet printing drop sequence generation and validation

Inkjet printing technology for printed microelectronics suffers from a number of non-idealities due to unwanted ink flow on the substrate. This can be mitigated and pattern fidelity can be improved by using an optimized drop placement sequence in contrast to the standard raster-scanning approach. However, it is challenging to auto-generate such printing sequences for complex printed patterns. Here, the generation and evaluation of the printing sequence are turned into a computer-vision problem. The desired printed pattern is taken as an input image and converted into a printing sequence using contour, symmetric, and matrix sequencing and corner compensation. After printing, pattern defects are detected by automated image processing to evaluate the printed pattern against the designed ground truth image and to determine the best possible algorithm for printing sequence generation for different pattern types. The machine vision-based experimental approach identifies the best solutions for solving the printing and defect optimization problem in terms of precision, recall, and accuracy. This methodology will enable the automated design of electronic circuits for applications such as wearable sensors, low-cost radio-frequency identification tags, or flexible displays.
