Persistence of objects is the basis for implementing object-oriented database programming languages. We have developed XDPC++, a persistent OOPL based on C++. XDPC++ keeps strictly the type orthogonality and completeness principles. This paper gives a brief explanation of our design ideas for XDPC++. Some relevant implementation techniques are also outlined.

A model for compound type changes encountered in schema evolution

Schema evolution is a problem that is faced by long-lived data. When a schema changes, existing persistent data can become inaccessible unless the database system provides mechanisms to access data created with previous versions of the schema. Most existing systems that support schema evolution focus on changes local to individual types within the schema, thereby limiting the changes that the database maintainer can perform. We have developed a model of type changes incorporating changes local to individual types as well as compound changes involving multiple types. The model describes both type changes and their impact on data by defining derivation rules to initialize new data based on the existing data. The derivation rules can describe local and nonlocal changes to types to capture the intent of a large class of type change operations. We have built a system called Tess (Type Evolution Software System) that uses this model to recognize type changes by comparing schemas and then produces a transformer that can update data in a database to correspond to a newer version of the schema.

OBJECT MANAGEMENT IN A persistent SMALLTALK SYSTEM

The main goal of the Alltalk project is to provide transparent database support to the Smalltalk programmer. As a first step towards this goal, the current version of Alltalk extends Smalltalk-80 by providing persistence to Smalltalk objects without adding a database sublanguage, new language syntax, classes or methods. This paper describes the implementation of object management in Alltalk, including database layout, database access methods, in-memory object management and high-level interface from the interpreter. It also discusses how the object manager is integrated in a unique way with the operations of the Alltalk garbage collector and interpreter.

Multiple implementations for a set of objects

When a set of objects is shared among several applications, multiple implementations for the set are required in order to suit each application as much as possible. Furthermore, if a set of objects could have multiple implementations, the following issues arise: (1) how to select the best implementation when processing queries on the set, and (2) how to propagate updates on an implementation of the set to the others. In this paper we propose a mechanism of multiple implementations for a set, and also give a solution for the latter issue. In the proposal a set can be of multiple types, and each of the types corresponds to an implementation already contained within the set. Update propagation can be achieved by a rewriting technique at compilation time. We also present a performance study in which the feasibility and effectiveness of our proposal were examined.

The EXODUS database toolkit, and in particular the E persistent programming language, have been used in two substantial database system implementation efforts by the authors, the Ariel database rule system and the Triton nested relation DBMS. An important advantage of using a persistent programming language for database system implementation is that it is easy to implement special-purpose persistent objects used by the DBMS such as catalogs, rule indexes, and nested relational structures. Support for transactions built into a persistent programming language greatly reduces the effort required to implement a database system. A disadvantage observed is that it is not possible to map the type system of the DBMS to the type system of the underlying programming language while still retaining good performance for ad hoc queries. Also, software engineering difficulties arise when a persistent language makes a distinction between database types and main-memory types.

Orthogonally persistent object systems

persistent Application Systems (PASs) are of increasing social and economic importance. They have the potential to be long-lived, concurrently accessed, and consist of large bodies of data and programs. Typical examples of PASs are CAD/CAM systems, office automation, CASE tools, software engineering environments, and patient-care support systems in hospitals. Orthogonally persistent object systems are intended to provide improved support for the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of PASs. Persistence abstraction allows the creation and manipulation of data in a manner, that is independent of its lifetime, thereby integrating the database view of information with the programming language view. This yields a number of advantages in terms of orthogonal design and programmer productivity which are beneficial for PASs. Design principles have been proposed for persistent systems. By following these principles, languages that provide persistence as a basic abstraction have been developed. In this paper, the motivation for orthogonal persistence is reviewed along with the above mentioned design principles. The concepts for integrating programming languages and databases through the persistence abstraction, and their benefits, are given. The technology to support persistence, the achievements, and future directions of persistence research are then discussed. © 1995 VLDB Endowment.

DESIGN OF THE MNEME persistent OBJECT STORE

The Mneme project is an investigation of techniques for integrating programming language and database features to provide better support for cooperative, information-intensive tasks such as computer-aided software engineering. The project strategy is to implement efficient, distributed, persistent programming languages. We report here on the Mneme persistent object store, a funda- mental component of the project, discussing its design and initial prototype. Mneme stores objects in a simple and general format, preserving object identity and object interrelationships. Specific goals for the store include portability, extensibility (especially with respect to object management policies), and performance. The model of memory that the store aims at is a single, cooperatively-shared heap, distributed across a collection of networked computers. The initial prototype is intended mainly to explore performance issues and to support object-oriented persistent programming languages. We include performance measurements from the prototype as well as more qualitative results.
