An Efficient Time Synchronization Scheme for Broadband Two-Way Relaying networks Based on physical-layer network coding

We present an efficient time synchronization scheme for broadband two-way relaying networks based on two-phase physical layer network coding. Especially, a preamble structure is proposed in this letter for the synchronization. The synchronization approach exploits the preamble in frequency domain and time domain to effectively separate the mixed signals, and jointly estimate timing-offsets and channel parameters, respectively. Numerical results confirm that the suggested method is superior to the conventional scheme, and is very suitable for the synchronization in broadband two-way relaying networks based on two-phase physical layer network coding.

In this paper, we focus on energy efficient routing in wireless ad hoc networks. We exploit modulo combining of continuous-time signals arriving at a receiving node from a number of synchronized transmitting nodes and introduce a cooperative physical layer network coding (CPLNC) scheme. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in saving energy, we incorporate CPLNC in two major energy-efficient routing algorithms. In the resulting modified algorithms, we derive threshold distances that enable the current node to intelligently decide whether it should use CPLNC or point to point transmission for the next hop. Simulation results confirm that the energy saving gains of the proposed new algorithms significantly outperform that of the baseline energy-efficient routing algorithms.

In this study, free space optical communication has been studied for different atmospheric conditions. Spatial modulation (SM) has been used to improve the performance of two-way relay cooperative communication. The proposed system employs decode and forward (DF) relaying technique along with physical layer network coding, hence it has been named as optical SM based DF two-way relay. It enables full-duplex communication thereby enhancing the system efficiency. The transmit optical source index as well as the information are exchanged between the two bidirectional nodes. Performance analysis of the system has been carried out in terms of lower and upper bounds of outage probability and average data rate for N-gamma cascaded fading channels. The analytical results have been validated by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The variation of the performance due to change in different parameters has also been reported in this study.

An information exchange problem between two source nodes over a network relay hub is considered where the downlink wireless broadcast channels from the hub to each node are asymmetrical, with different received SNRs. Conventional XOR network coding uses a single downlink FEC with a code rate that protects the node with the smaller received SNR, thereby penalizing the achievable information throughput to the node with larger received SNR. This paper presents an alternative physical network coding scheme that allows different downlink FECs from the hub to each node with different code rates and different data encoding lengths to achieve optimum capacity and information throughput results.

A group of nearby wireless end devices such as mobile phones can benefit a fast service to satisfy their required packets by cooperating to exchange their packets after receiving collectively from a common base station. This problem can be formulated as a coding and transmission scheme and solved by the linear network coding. We propose a balanced coding and transmission (BCT) scheme that assigns suitable clients to find and transmit linear combinations of the received packets. The goals of our scheme are to minimize the total number of transmissions, to maintain fairness on the number of transmissions among the participants in the cooperative group and to maintain the limited energy resources until all members satisfy their needs. Moreover, we also introduce transmission scheme with physical layer network coding (BCTS/PNC) for the same problem to further reduce the required transmission time slots and accomplish the data exchange process in short time. We present the performance of the schemes and discussion in terms of the fairness, the number of transmissions and the completion time by testing with various simulation parameters and scenarios.

This paper analyzes the performance of the physical layer network coding (PLNC) approach based on Decode-and-Forward (DF) and operating in multipath fading channel. In actual channel affected by multipath fading the DF method has poor performance since the relay node cannot properly perform data decoding. In addition the decoding at the relay requires the knowledge of the channels involved in the communication with a consequent signaling overhead. In order to overcome these problems this paper proposes an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) system where the pre-emphasis approach is considered jointly with an efficient method of subcarrier suppression named Blind Subcarrier Suppression (BSS). Simulations results show that BSS achieves high throughput with a Bit Error Probability (BER) near to that of a classical OFDM system in multipath channel.

In this paper we present a cooperative medium access control (MAC) protocol that is designed for a physical layer that can decode interfering transmissions in distributed wireless networks. The proposed protocol pro-actively enforces two independent packet transmissions to interfere in a controlled and cooperative manner with the help of a relay. To enable distributed, uncoordinated, and adaptive operation of the protocol, a relay selection mechanism is introduced so that the optimal relay is selected dynamically and depending on the channel conditions. The most important advantage of the protocol is that interfering transmissions can originate from completely independent unicast transmissions from two senders. We present simulation results that validate the efficacy of our proposed scheme in terms of throughput and delay.

In this paper, we propose a joint design of MIMO-PNC (multiple-input multiple-output physical layer network coding) and channel decoding in two way relay channels. The paper shows that if we adopt the same repeat Accumulate (RA) channel code at the two end nodes, there would be a compatible decoder at the relay which can transform the received superimposed packet to the network coding form of the two packets efficiently. Specifically, we redesign the belief propagation decoding algorithm of the RA code for traditional point-to-point channel to suit the need of the MIMO PNC channel. The simulation results show that our new scheme outperforms the previously proposed schemes which combined MIMO NC with channel coding/decoding significantly in terms of BER with little added complexity.

Analysis of Channel Estimation Error in physical layer network coding

This article investigates the effect of erroneous channel estimation on performance of physical layer network coding over fading channels. In this scenario, the relay maps the superimposed noisy modulated data, received from the two end terminals, to network coded combination of the source packets. We consider channel estimation error to be Gaussian distributed and formulate the network coding error by the distance between real and estimated points in the channel coefficients plane. Using this model, we present a statistical lower bound on variance of estimation error that can be tolerated by the relay terminal without imposing a network coding error on the system.

Optimal energy-efficient scheme for two-way relay channel using physical layer network coding

Systems are always designed and optimized based on full traffic load in the current literatures. However, practical systems are seldom operating at full load, even at peak traffic hours. Instead of maximizing system rate to achieve the full load, an optimal energy-efficient scheme to minimize the transmit power with required rates is investigated in this article. The considered scenario is a two-way relay channel using amplify-and-forward protocol of physical layer network coding, where two end nodes exchange messages via multiple relay nodes within two timeslots. A joint power allocation and relay selection scheme is designed to achieve the minimum transmit power. Through convex optimization theory, we firstly prove that single relay selection scheme is the most energy-efficient way for physical layer network coding. The closed-form expressions of power allocation are also given. Numerical simulations demonstrate the performance of the designed scheme as well as the comparison among different schemes.
