Most previous researches on the rate analysis of the power allocation (PA) schemes in two-way decode-and-forward (DF) relay systems typically focus on maximizing the instantaneous objective rates. However, the ergodic rate analysis of the optimized rates is not well considered. In this paper, we investigate the ergodic rates of the PA schemes in a two-way DF relay system, where the physical-layer network coding (PNC) protocol is adopted. Specifically, under a total power constraint, we consider three heuristic PA schemes, in which the optimization objectives are: 1) maximizing the sum rate;2) maximizing the sum rate with an additional rate fairness constraint;and 3) maximizing the minor rate of the two directions of the system. The cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of the equivalent system SNR are approximately obtained and the analytical expressions for the calculations of the ergodic rates are theoretically derived. Numerical results show that the derived analytical rates are converged to the simulated results in high SNR regions.

High speed transmission of information suffers inevitably by intersymbol interference (ISI) induced by multipath propagation over frequency selective channels. ISI has been a major obstacle preventing the successful implementation of physical layer network coding (PLNC) systems in these environments. Another major obstacle is the high computational complexity of existing algorithms dealing with ISI, which is a determining factor in the design of relay nodes. In this paper, we propose a novel and computationally efficient decision feedback equalizer structure that is utilized at the end node and in conjunction with a simple amplify and forward (AF) technique employed at the relay. We derive the optimal equations for the decision feedback equalizer (DFE) coefficients and evaluate the end-to-end bit error rate performance in frequency selective channels, and provide both analytical and numerical simulation results that demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach under realistic channel conditions. The obtained results show that E2E performance is dominated by the channel with most severe frequency selectivity.

We propose a collision recovery scheme for symbol-synchronous slotted ALOHA based on physical layer network coding over extended Galois fields. Information is extracted from colliding bursts allowing to achieve higher maximum throughput with respect to previously proposed collision recovery schemes. An energy efficiency analysis is also performed, and it is shown that by adjusting the transmission probability, high energy efficiency can be achieved. A performance evaluation is carried out using the proposed algorithms, revealing remarkable performance in terms of normalized throughput. Copyright (C) 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Maximum Throughput Gain of Compute-and-Forward for Multiple Unicast

Compute-and-Forward (CF), also known as reliable physical layer network coding, is a technique that provides the possibility of exploiting the features of broadcast and superposition in wireless networks. It has been shown that the throughput for multiple unicast traffic can be significantly boosted by CF. In this letter, the limit of such improvement is investigated by comparing the performance of CF with the traditional routing-based transmission schemes. For networks characterized by local interference and half-duplex constraints, it is proven that the throughput gain of CF over traditional routing, expressed by an improvement factor, is upper bounded by 3K, whereK is the number of unicast sessions. Furthermore, a class of networks is presented for which an improvement by a factor of K/2 is feasible by applying CF. Hence, the throughput gain of CF is at most on the order of K for any network, and a gain in that order is indeed achievable for some networks.

In this paper, compute-and-forward physical layer network coding (PNC) scheme is investigated for wireless two-way relay channel. The achievable rates are reviewed both for AWGN channel and fading channel. New transmit schemes by using channel inversion precoding are proposed over fading channel to achieve much higher rates. It is revealed that with the proposed channel aware precoding scheme, the performance of compute-and-forward improves enormously. For two-way relay channel, compute-and-forward can achieve the maximum degree of freedom (DoF) of 2 without the limitation of Diophantine tradeoff, which indicates that compute-and-forward is the most suitable relaying scheme for two-way relay channel.

In this paper, the performance of single relay selection (SRS) scheme which used in an amplify-and-forward relay network over Rayleigh fading channels is analyzed. In this scheme, each of the two source nodes has an important effect in selecting the best relay node and one of the relay node with the minimum bit error rate (BER) is selected. Then this relay node is used for cooperation between two source nodes. The upper and lower bounds for signal to noise ratio (SNR) and the BER for single relay selection scheme are presented. For improving the system performance, optimal power allocation (OPA) between the sources and the relay node is considered based on decreasing the BER. Simulation results are provided to complement the theoretical analysis.

In this paper, average bit error rate (BER) of physical layer network coding (PLNC) based half duplex Cognitive Radio Relay (CRR) system in multi-source multi-destination scenario is analyzed in overlay and underlay modes. Two source and two destination nodes are considered in the system model. With the help of Decode and Forward (DF) relay, two source nodes send data to both the destination nodes in two time slots. The DF relay decodes the data symbols from the two source nodes and transmits the PLNC encoded symbol to both the destination nodes in the second time slot. Analytical expressions are derived for average BER of the proposed PLNC based CRR system in overlay and underlay mode. The performance of the proposed system is compared with non-PLNC based system.

In this paper we propose a cooperative protocol and a symbol decoding algorithm that target improved performance in the presence of inter-cell interference (ICI) in wireless cellular networks. Our scheme uses the wireless signals that interfere at relay nodes located at the cell edge instead of discarding them. The relays are non-regenerative and apply a space-time code (STC) to the interfered signal. Subsequently, the relays broadcast the coded signals. At the destinations the interfered and ST-coded signals are decoded in two stages. First by decoding the STC, and then by applying successive interference cancellation (SIC). Simulation results for Rayleigh fading channel reveal significant throughput benefits even in the low SNR regime. We also present results for a small-scale LTE-based cellular scenario and we compare our scheme against the Coordinated MultiPoint (CoMP) transmission mode of LTE-A that is based on beamforming.

In this paper, we consider Doppler compensation for time varying underwater acoustic channels. The underlying system model comprises two sources, Si and S2, communicating with each other through a relay, R. The transmission process goes through two phases. In the first phase, the two sources transmit simultaneously and the relay receives. In the second phase, the relay processes the received signals and broadcasts the combined signal to the destinations, i.e., sources. The underlying channels are considered to be time varying frequency selective channels, where the only source of time variation is the relative motion between the transceivers. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is used as a means to combat frequency selectivity. Two cases are considered, namely, when R uses multiple resampling (MR) preprocessing to reduce the effect of intercarrier interference (ICI) resulting from the time variation, and when R uses single resampling (SR) preprocessing. In both cases, in the second phase of transmission, each source performs MR preprocessing and after subtracting its own signal ICI equalization is performed to further reduce the effect of residual ICI. Simulation results show that performing MR at R outperforms the case when SR is used at R, however, this comes at the expense of more hardware complexity.

In this paper, outage performance of physical layer network coding (PLNC) based half duplex Cognitive Radio Relay (CRR) system with two source and destination nodes is analyzed in overlay and underlay spectrum sharing schemes. Using Decode and Forward (DF) relay, two source nodes send data to both the destination nodes in two time slots when there is large fading and path loss between one of the source and destination nodes. The DF relay decodes the data symbols from the two source nodes and transmits the PLNC encoded symbol to both the destination nodes in the second time slot. Analytical expressions are derived for end-to-end outage probability for the proposed PLNC based CRR system and non-PLNC based system. Practical simulations are carried out to validate the analytical expressions.
