In this paper, cooperative physical layer network coding (CPLNC) is introduced as an energy efficient transmission strategy for future wireless networks. Implementation framework for CPLNC is presented and its performance is analyzed in Rayleigh fading channels. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in saving energy, we incorporate CPLNC in two major energy-efficient routing algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in reducing energy consumption.

In this paper we present a scheme for multiple-packet reception (MPR) that allows the concurrent packet transmission from several asynchronous users and is based on a new algorithm for successive interference cancellation (SIC). Transmitted signals are superimposed at the destination nodes and also at a relay node. The system model allows for the transmitted packets to be superimposed asynchronously with an arbitrary pattern at each node that receives them. For the final version of the proposed scheme we present a joint MPR and channel decoding algorithm.

Compressed Video Streaming in Cooperative Wireless networks with Interfering Transmissions

In this paper, we present a video streaming system for wireless networks that employs utility optimization of pre-compressed video at the application layer, together with a novel cooperative wireless physical layer (PHY) that allows interfering transmissions. Our system model considers multiple and independent unicast or multicast transmissions between network nodes while a number of them serve as relays. For this new PHY the average transmission rate that each sender-destination pair can achieve is estimated first. Next, we show that the utility optimization problem can be simplified due to the features of the proposed PHY. Subsequently, we devise a utility optimization algorithm that is executed independently at each sender and it derives the optimal video packets that should be sent in the wireless link given the calculated rate constraint. Simulation results demonstrate that for unicast video streaming scenarios and with the utility optimization framework, allowing packets to interfere is a better choice than employing a typical cooperative PHY. For the case of multicast video delivery the performance of the proposed scheme is significantly improved for good channel conditions while the improvement is minimized in the low channel SNR regime when compared to the unicast scenario.

Pairwise Check Decoding for LDPC Coded Two-Way Relay Block Fading Channels

Partial decoding has the potential to achieve a larger capacity region than full decoding in two-way relay (TWR) channels. Existing partial decoding realizations are however designed for Gaussian channels and with a static physical layer network coding (PLNC). In this paper, we propose a new solution for joint network coding and channel decoding at the relay, called pairwise check decoding (PCD), for low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded TWR system over block fading channels. The main idea is to form a check relationship table (check-relation-tab) for the superimposed LDPC coded packet pair in the multiple access (MA) phase in conjunction with an adaptive PLNC mapping in the broadcast (BC) phase. Using PCD, we then present a partial decoding method, two-stage closest-neighbor clustering with PCD (TS-CNC-PCD), with the aim of minimizing the worst pairwise error probability. Moreover, we propose the minimum correlation optimization (MCO) for selecting the better check-relation-tabs. Simulation results confirm that the proposed TS-CNC-PCD offers a sizable gain over the conventional XOR with belief propagation (BP) in fading channels.

A Cooperative network coding Strategy for the Interference Relay Channel

In this paper, we study an interference relay network with a satellite as relay. We propose a cooperative strategy based on physical layer network coding and superposition modulation decoding for uni-directional communications among users. The performance of our solution in terms of throughput is evaluated through capacity analysis and simulations that include practical constraints such as the lack of synchronization in time and frequency. We obtain a significant throughput gain compared to the classical time sharing case.

Coordinating Interfering Transmissions in Cooperative Wireless LANs

In this paper we present a cooperative medium access control (MAC) protocol that is designed for a physical layer that can decode interfering transmissions in distributed wireless networks. The proposed protocol pro-actively enforces two independent packet transmissions to interfere in a controlled and cooperative manner. The protocol ensures that when a node desires to transmit a unicast packet, regardless of the destination, it coordinates with minimal overhead with relay nodes in order to concurrently transmit over the wireless channel with a third node. The relay is responsible for allowing packets from the two selected nodes to interfere only when the desired packets can be decoded at the appropriate destinations and increase the sum-rate of the cooperative transmission. In case this is not feasible, classic cooperative or direct transmission is adopted. To enable distributed, uncoordinated, and adaptive operation of the protocol, a relay selection mechanism is introduced so that the optimal relay is selected dynamically and depending on the channel conditions. The most important advantage of the protocol is that interfering transmissions can originate from completely independent unicast transmissions from two senders. We present simulation results that validate the efficacy of our proposed scheme in terms of throughput and delay.

We present a suboptimal multicast strategy to facilitate the communication in the two-way relay (TWR) channel with multiple antennas using physical layer network coding (PNC). We study the sum-rate of the TWR channel and find an upper bound. Such a system enjoys the benefits of having fewer time slots due to the use of PNC and the additional spatial degree of freedom created by multiple antennas. The same number of antennas is assumed in the relay and two terminals, which makes the multicast problem much more complicated. With the assumption of channel reciprocity and the CSI at the transmitters, we design a suboptimal codebook for the multicast and a criterion for the uplink data rates selection to optimize the sum-rate. The analysis shows that the data rate achieved via this suboptimal multicast scheme is very close to the optimal multicast capacity. We also observe in the optimization process that maximizing the uplink data rates may not increase the sum-rate and instead, they should be adjusted according to the downlink data rate in order to maximize the sum-rate of the TWR channel.

This paper studies the error propagation phenomenon for a multi-way relay channel based on binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation and network coding in the physical layer. Though physical layer network coding enhances the throughput of a multi-way relay system by reducing number of time slots, its error performance can be highly degraded since decision about a user's message depends on previous decisions. In this paper, the error probability of a multi-way relay system is examined through both analytical and numerical methods. We show that the system performance is significantly controlled by signal power and number of users accessing the single relay. Based on numerical analysis, the critical number of users to limit the error rate within an acceptable upper bound is found.

This work considers two-way relay channels (TWRC), where two terminals transmit simultaneously to each other with the help of a relay node. For single antenna systems, we propose several new transmission schemes for both amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol and decode-and-forward (DF) protocol where the channel state information. is not required. These new schemes are the counterpart of the traditional non-coherent detection or differential detection in point-to-point communications. Differential modulation design for TWRC is challenging because the received signal is a mixture of the signals from both source terminals. We derive maximum likelihood (ML) detectors for both AF and DF protocols, where the latter can be considered as performing differential network coding at the physical layer. As the exact ML detector is prohibitively complex, we propose several suboptimal alternatives including decision feedback detectors and prediction-based detectors. All these strategies work well as evidenced by the simulation results. The proposed protocols are especially useful when the required average data rate is high. In addition, we extend the protocols to the multiple-antenna case and provide the design criterion of the differential unitary space time modulation (DUSTM) for TWRC.

Collision Recovery in Distributed Wireless networks with Opportunistic Cooperation

In this letter we focus on the problem of recovering information from collided packets in distributed wireless networks that are based on the IEEE 802.11 standard. We propose a cooperative protocol that employs the concept of physical layer network coding for this purpose. With the proposed protocol relay nodes opportunistically forward locally collided packets to the destinations. Subsequently, the destination nodes recover the desired packet by employing a detection algorithm that combines the directly-collided and forwarded-collided signals.
