Design of Channel Coded Heterogeneous Modulation physical layer network coding

In a two-way relay channel network (TWRC), the integration of channel coding into symmetric physical layer network coding (PNC) has been well studied, where both sources use exactly the same channel coding and modulation schemes and the relay decodes and reencodes the codewords obtained from the superimposed signals. How to integrate the channel coding into heterogeneous modulation PNC (HePNC), where the sources apply different modulations, is an open issue. In this paper, we propose a channel coded HePNC (CoHePNC) scheme under asymmetric TWRC. For repeat-accumulate (RA) codes applied at the sources, a full-state sum-product decoding algorithm is proposed which enables the relay to decode the superimposed signals from the sources to the raw decoding results firstly, and then re-encode and obtain the network-coded codewords by mapping the raw decoding results according to the proposed bit-level mapping functions. We further optimized the bit-level mapping functions according to the two source-relay channel conditions. Extensive simulation results demonstrated that the proposed CoHePNC outperforms the existing channel coded PNC schemes in terms of the relay decoding error rate and the end-to-end bit error rate under asymmetric TWRC scenarios.

In this paper, we build a physical layer network coding (PLNC) system with adaptive pre-equalization and decode-forward transform. First, adaptive equalizers are designed at the transmitters (Alice and Bob) to compensate the distortion of channels, where pre-equalization and post-equalization share the same equalizer coefficients. The coefficients are adjusted adaptively with channels by zero forcing (ZF) criterions. The decode-forward (DF) mode is adopted at Relay to improve the system performance furtherly. Simulation results show that the superiority of the joint employment of adaptive pre-equalization and the DF mode.

In this paper, we study bidirectional communications in multi-hop underwater acoustic networks, where two nodes exchange information with the help of a number of intermediate nodes. We propose an approach, called hybrid PNC, that employs two different PNC communication sessions hybridly to explore the benefits of the long propagation delay. Compared with the existing approaches, our approach can achieve nearly optimal bidirectional communication throughputs with a shorter latency, and allow flexible choices of design parameters.

Two wireless nodes outside each others radio range can communicate via a node in between, known as a relay node. A relay node may be a simple repeater or a fully functional entity depending upon the deployment scenario. In a two-way relay communication (TWRC), physical-layer network coding (PNC) exploits the superimposed nature of electromagnetic waves at the relay node to improve the throughput performance. Synchronization of information from two end users is critical when exchanging information via a relay node. Traditionally in PNC, modulation constellations sent from the two end users are chosen to be the same. In this paper, we investigate the performance of a PNC-based TWRC system in a Rayleigh fading scenario when the modulation constellation of one end user is rotated with respect to the modulation constellation at the other end user. The analysis shows that the rotated-QPSK gives distinct decision regions when the modulation constellation of QPSK and rotated-QPSK are superimposed, unlike the traditional (QPSK)(QPSK) transmission. Simulation results for the symbol error rate (SER) at the relay node shows the loss in performance of (QPSK)-(rotated-QPSK) scheme compared to the (QPSK)(QPSK) scheme due to phase rotation.

Secret Data Transmission in Wireless Sensor network with physical layer network coding

In this paper, the physical layer network coding is applied into wireless sensor network for secret data transmission. The source node will send the gathered data to the sink node with help of multiple relay nodes. By applying the physical layer network coding, the received signal at the relay nodes is guaranteed to be a summed signal which cannot be separated. Thus, the attack from untrusted relays as well as external eavesdroppers can be prevented. Two types of coding algorithm has been discussed, one for BPSK coding and another for nested lattice coding. Analysis is also conduct for the proposed protocol. In the view of transmission, the proposed protocol can achieve the same time slots cost as the non -security protocol. In the view of security, the proposed protocol can successfully against the attacks identical with cryptography approach, however less hardware and computational complexity will be consumed for the proposed protocol.

Simplified Maximum Likelihood Detection with Unitary Precoding for XOR physical layer network coding

This paper proposes novel simplified maximum likelihood detection for XOR physical layer network coding (XOR-PNC) in bi-directional wireless relay systems with Quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK). The proposed detection applies unitary precoding to achieve superior performance without computationally prohibitive exhaustive search. The performance of the XOR employing the proposed simplified MLD with the precoding is analyzed in relay systems with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The performance of the XOR-PNC with the proposed techniques is also evaluated by computer simulation. The XOR-PNC with the proposed techniques achieves about 7 dB better performance than the amplify-and-forward physical layer network coding in the 5-path fading channel at BER= 10(-4). It is also shown that the XOR-PNC with the proposed techniques achieves better performance than that without precoding.

Nonlinear Equalization Approaches for physical layer network coding

We consider a two-way relaying system employing physical layer network coding in channels suffering from frequency-selective fading. We study decision-feedback equalization (DFE), a technique based on delayed decision-feedback sequence estimation (DDFSE), and Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) approaches for mitigating the distortions introduced by the channel. For DFE, we introduce transmit filtering schemes that generate identical overall source-to-relay channel impulse responses for both source nodes, while achieving the maximum signal-to-noise ratio after equalization for the zero-forcing and the minimum mean-squared error criterion, respectively. The advocated DDFSE approach also relies on transmit filtering at the source nodes. For the THP scheme, we derive the optimal precoding filters that guarantee an intersymbol interference free source-to-relay transmission. In order to obtain a two-way relaying system, which uses the same equalization techniques in both transmission directions, we design a THP-based compromise precoding scheme for the relay-to-destination transmission. The performance of the proposed techniques is compared with that of benchmark schemes with simpler filtering/precoding, where identical overall source-to-relay channel impulse responses are enforced by straightforward but suboptimum choices for the transmit filters. Our results reveal that the developed schemes enable significant gains compared with the benchmark schemes.

This paper proposes a new relaying technique, hierarchical physical layer network coding (H-PNC), aimed at increasing the spectrum and energy efficiency in multi-hop wireless networks by supporting two bi-directional traffic flows simultaneously. H-PNC is applicable to the scenario in which two source nodes exchange data with the help of a relay, and the relay also needs to exchange data with one source node in an asymmetric two-way relay channel network, where the channel conditions of two source-relay links are asymmetric. H-PNC arranges transmissions in two stages, the multiple access (MA) stage and the broadcast (BC) stage. In the MA stage, the source node with the better channel to the relay can superimpose the symbol targeting to the relay on the symbol targeting to the other source node. In the BC stage, the relay can superimpose the symbol targeting to the source node with the better channel on the broadcast symbol. Thus, one more bidirectional information exchange is achieved beyond traditional PNC. Designs and optimizations of three H-PNC schemes are presented, and the error performance of QPSK-BPSK H-PNC is derived. Extensive simulations have been conducted to evaluate the system performance. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrated that H-PNC achieves a substantial performance gain.

To overcome the problem of constellation points ambiguity in physical layer network coding (PLNC), this paper proposes a new QAM-based PLNC de-noising mapping scheme. In this scheme, the relay node rearranges the M-QAM constellation mapping, and merges the points of constellation according to a certain rule. Comparing with traditional scheme, this design reduces the number of constellation points nearly a half, which increases the Euclidean distance between adjacent points in the constellation, thus improves the BER performance. In addition, the relay node only needs demodulation - remapping - modulation, which significantly reduces the processing complexity. Simulation results show the effectiveness of our scheme.
