Full Duplex Relay Based Cognitive Radio System with physical layer network coding

In this paper, a full duplex relay (FDR) based cognitive radio (CR) system is proposed with two secondary source nodes and two secondary destination nodes. The concept of physical layer network coding (PLNC) is applied on decode and forward (DF) FDR to ensure that both source nodes can transmit data to both destination nodes. Further, the availability of multiple spectrum bands enables CR system to decode source symbols at destination nodes. The major advantage of the proposed system with FDR and PLNC is that it requires only one time slot to send the data from both the source nodes to both the destination nodes. If FDR is replaced with half duplex relay (HDR), 2 time slots are required for the CR system. If PLNC is not applied at the DF relay, the CR system would require 2 or 4 time slots when FDR or HDR is employed, respectively. In Nakagami- fading channels environment, analytical expressions are derived for end-to-end outage performance of the proposed PLNC based system in the presence of echo interference at the FDR and with HDR in the place of FDR. The outage performance of the proposed CR system is analyzed for various scaling and shape parameters of Nakagami- fading channels.

In this study, the authors examine the power allocation (PA) in a two-way relay system, where the relay adopts physical layer network coding based on decode-and-forward protocol. In the PA, the optimisation objective is to minimise the end-to-end symbol error probability (SEP) under a total power constraint. Since the optimal power allocation (OPA) scheme requires numerical methods (for exhaustive search) to find the solution, which might be infeasible for practical systems, the authors propose a near optimal power allocation (NOPA) scheme that has a closed-form solution by studying the properties of the OPA scheme. The asymptotic SEP expression of the proposed NOPA scheme is also derived. Simulation results show that the performance of proposed NOPA scheme is quite close to that of the OPA scheme. Furthermore, it is shown that the NOPA scheme can provide asymptotic SNR gains of 1.76 dB and 2.22 dB over two well-known schemes.

In this paper, we investigate the power allocation (PA) schemes in a two-way relay system, where the relay adopts physical layer network coding (PNC) based on decode-and-forward (DF) protocol. The objective is to determine the optimal power allocation (OPA) scheme at both the source nodes and at the relay that minimizes the end-to-end symbol error probability (SEP) performance under a total power constraint. The perfect channel state information (CSI) is assumed to be available at both the source nodes and at the relay. Since numerical methods (e.g., exhaustive search) are required to find the solution of the OPA scheme, which might be infeasible for practical systems, based on upper and lower bounds on the optimal solution, we propose a near optimal power allocation (NOPA) scheme. The asymptotic SEP expression of the proposed NOPA scheme is also derived. By both the analytical and simulated results, it is shown that the proposed NOPA scheme provides the asymptotic SNR gains of about 1.76dB and 2.22dB over two well-known schemes in high SNR. Furthermore, simulation results show that the performance of proposed NOPA scheme is quite close to that of the OPA scheme.

Physical Layer Network Coding for Distributed Massive MIMO

We consider distributed "massive MIMO" schemes as a compromise between small cells and massive MIMO for 5G wireless. We consider a scheme we call massive MIMO-CoMP which combines the benefits of distributed massive MIMO and CoMP, and propose the use of physical layer network coding for the backhaul of such a network. We show that this provides a better performance with much smaller backhaul load than would a practical CoMP scheme. The performance is also only fractionally poorer than collocated massive MIMO with joint MMSE detection, but enables the benefits of distributed antennas.

In this work, for the two-way relay channel employing physical layer network coding, mapping diversity is realized via repetitive transmission at the realy. Under time division transmission scheme, the effect of mapping diversity on overall physical layer network coded system performance is investigated and it is shown to attain lower symbol error rates within lower time slots without a change at data rate.

Recent advancements in high data rate networks have led to a growing interest in improving performance of wireless relay networks through the use of physical layer network coding (PLNC) technique. In the PLNC technique, the relay node exploits the network coding operation that occurs naturally when the two electromagnetic (EM) waves are superimposed on one another to directly decode the modulo-2 sum of the transmitted symbols. In this thesis, we will present an optimal power control algorithm for performance improvement in wireless relay nodes implementing physical layer network coding. We shall also present a sub-optimal power control algorithm and compare its performance with the optimal power control algorithm. Our approach will ﬁrst derive the probability of error for the amplitude-controlled system using Maximum Likelihood detection and then minimize the probability of error using amplitude control functions as variables to derive the optimal power control functions. We shall start by considering the thresholds of the system to be the maximum of the independent received amplitudes to derive the probability of error equations and then extend it to a variable threshold system, where the threshold is a function of independent received amplitudes. We then derive an optimal power control algorithm for a single channel Rayleigh system and implement this power control algorithm independently on the terminals to achieve a sub-optimal power control algorithm. Our results show that the proposed optimal power control algorithm boosts the performance of the PLNC system signiﬁcantly compared to the no power control system. We also show that there are no signiﬁcant diﬀerences between the performances of optimal power control and the sub-optimal power control algorithms. We further show that the performance of the system is not degraded much when the amplitudes of the terminals deviate from the optimal amplitudes.

In this paper, various physical layer network coding (PNC) schemes are revisited for wireless two-way relay channel in single antenna case. The achievable rates are reviewed for AWGN channel and newly derived for fading channel for all these PNC schemes employing lattice codes and lattice decoding. A new transmit scheme using precoding is proposed over fading channel to achieve higher rates. It is revealed that for two-way relay channel, compute-and-forward can achieve the highest rate over both AWGN channel and fading channel. Thus it is the most suitable PNC scheme for two-way relay.

We proposed the physical layer security (PLS) under the untrusted relay in the wireless communication with the physical layer network coding (PLNC). In PLNC, the two information source accesses the relay station, simultaneously and thus it is difficult for the relay station to demodulate each signal due to the masking-effect from the other signal. As a result, the leakage of information to the untrusted relay is avoidable. The transmit power control (TPC) for the balancing between the two received signal powers is powerful. The secure capacity is enlarged but has not been optimized for maximizing the secure capacity. In this paper, the quasi-optimization of TPC for enlarging secure capacity is derived in the wireless communication with the untrusted relay and PLNC.

In this letter, we propose a secure beamforming scheme for physical layer network coding (PNC)-based multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) two-way relaying system. The relay node performs PNC mapping. An eavesdropper is attempting to intercept the user information. The channel state information (CSI) of the user-to-eavesdropper channel is imperfect at the user nodes. A robust optimization problem is formulated to design beamforming vectors at the user nodes and relay. The problem is non-convex, and an algorithm is proposed to solve that. In the numerical analysis, we discuss the convergence of the proposed algorithm and the impact of the CSI error on the performance.

We discuss the system-level simulation of an ultradense, multi-hop wireless network employing physical layer network coding to increase its throughput and eliminate the effect of interference between links in the network. We describe the network paradigm being developed by the DIWINE project, and the principles of physical layer network coding. The system-level simulator (SLS) operates on a packet level, and determines packet error probability for the network coded data at each relay in terms of the noise power and the signal level from each incoming link. We describe this simulation methodology and the software package used to implement it, and give numerical results for throughput versus load for a simple example network, showing that the approach developed by DIWINE outperforms a simple TDMA baseline scheme under most conditions.
