physical layer network coding (PNC) has recently attracted attention in wireless relay system. With PNC, the destructive effect of interference in wireless networks can be eliminated and the capacity of networks can be boosted significantly. However, synchronization is always considered as an outstanding issue which causes performance penalty on PNC. In [7], the impact of imperfect synchronization is investigated, however the analysis only considers the time domain signal processing, and it does not target at any specific practical system. In this paper, we investigate the synchronization issues on PNC in the most flourishing wireless network, long term evolution (LTE) system, considering the orthogonal frequency division modulation (OFDM) characteristics, the channel model, the transmission scheme and the adopted synchronization mechanism in LTE.

In this survey article, we consider the wireless multi-way relaying scenario, in which there is no direct link connecting the nodes and multiple nodes exchange information with the help of a relay node. In a multi-way relaying scenario, if several nodes transmit simultaneously, due to the superposition nature of the wireless channel, multiple access interference results at the relay node, which can potentially degrade the performance. However, recent results on physical layer network coding for the two-way relay channel with finite signal sets have shown that the multiple access interference can be effectively tackled by a proper choice of transmission schemes at the nodes. The effect of the multiple access interference is the presence of signal set dependent deep channel fade conditions. For the two-way relay channel, the harmful effect of the deep channel fade conditions have been shown to be avoidable using two techniques: (i) adaptively changing the network coding maps used at the relay node, a process called denoising, which eliminates the harmful effect of the additive noise when a deep channel fade condition occurs (ii) eliminating the occurrence of the deep channel fade conditions at the transmitting nodes itself without any CSIT by Distributed Space Time coding. We survey the results based on these two schemes for the two-way and three way relaying scenarios and point out some problems which remain unsolved. Towards the end, we discuss about the extension of the schemes developed for the two-way relaying scenario to the multi-way relaying scenario.

In linear networks with physical layer network coding (PNC), the relay node performs the combination of the relaying data from both end users. Moreover, the adaptive power allocation (APA) scheme can optimize the transmission rate of PNC for relaying communication systems. However, when the relay nodes are deployed with different distance to both of end user nodes, it is called near-far effect (NFE). The NFE degrades the bit error rate (BER) performance with deteriorating the decoding performance of PNC. Therefore, in order to further optimize the transmission power allocation (PA) for both of end user nodes and relaying node we propose a total adaptive power allocation (TAPA) scheme in this paper. With the proposed TAPA scheme, the NFE of conventional PNC systems can be diminished and the BER performance is improved. Simulation results show that the proposed TAPA improves the BER performance especially for the severe NFE environments.

We consider a two-way relay channel in which two transmitters want to exchange information through a central relay. The relay observes a superposition of the transmitted signals from which a function of the transmitted messages is computed for broadcast. We consider the design of codebooks which permit the recovery of a function at the relay and derive information-theoretic bounds on the rates for reliable decoding at the relay. In the spirit of compute-and-forward, we present a multilevel coding scheme that permits reliable computation (or, decoding) of a class of functions at the relay. The function to be decoded is chosen at the relay depending on the channel realization. We define such a class of reliably computable functions for the proposed coding scheme and derive rates that are universally achievable over a set of channel gains when this class of functions is used at the relay. We develop our framework with general modulation formats in mind, but numerical results are presented for the case where each node transmits using 4-ary and 8-ary modulation schemes. Numerical results demonstrate that the flexibility afforded by our proposed scheme permits substantially higher rates than those achievable by always using a fixed function or considering only linear functions over higher order fields. Our numerical results indicate that it is favorable to allow the relay to attempt both compute-and-forward and decode-and-forward decoding. Indeed, either method considered separately is suboptimal for computation over general channels. However, we obtain a converse result when the transmitters are restricted to using identical binary linear codebooks generated uniformly at random. We show that it is impossible for this code ensemble to achieve any rate higher than the maximum of the rates achieved using compute-and-forward and decode-and-forward decoding. Phase Shift Optimization for RIS Enabled PNC System With Multiple Antennas

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have been developed to exploit the stochastic characteristics of the propagation environment for next generation wireless systems. On the other hand, the integration of wireless physical network coding (PNC) and multiple antennas yields notable enhancements in system performance. This paper presents a multiuser system, employing RIS enabled PNC alongside multiple antennas to minimize both delay and error probability. Our aim is to establish reliable communication between the user pairs, which communicate through a base station (BS) via RIS. Therefore, the reflecting coefficients including both phases and amplitudes of the RIS are optimized by using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm for both single and multiple RIS cases. Extensive results are presented to compare the proposed algorithm with random phase shift, network coding (NC) and the search algorithm to illustrate its superiority.

Polarization-Aided coding for Nonorthogonal Multiple Access

In this article, we propose a polarization-aided polar coding scheme over nonorthogonal multiple access channels operated with physical-layer network coding (PN-NOMA), where $M$ users adopt polar coding for transmission. By exploiting the characteristic of physical-layer network coding and polar encoding, we found that the polar code at the users can be seen as nested codes and subcodeword of a larger polar code. It enables us to construct a single (virtual) polar code at the receiver, which has the length M times longer than that of the original user codes. In this way, we can decode all the user messages within this single polar code. The channel polarization effect as well as the decoding performance can be improved. We further propose a Monte Carlo-based code construction for the virtual polar code with user channel coefficients, and short nested user codes can be individually derived from this code. Simulation results show that the proposed PN-NOMA can achieve significant performance gains of more than 0.5 dB as compared to conventional polar-coded NOMA (PC-NOMA) over power-imbalanced channels, and this gain is more than 2 dB over Rayleigh fading channels.

Robust precoder-decoder design for physical layer network coding-based MIMO two-way relaying system

In this paper, we investigate a robust joint precoder-decoder design scheme for a multiple-input multiple-output physical layer network coding (PNC)-based two-way relay system. An orthogonal training sequence is used to estimate the channels. The estimate is imperfect, and a robust design is proposed to find precoders at the source nodes and decoder at the relay node to facilitate PNC operations during multiple-access stage. Both channel estimation error and antenna correlations are used to formulate the optimization problem to minimize the weighted mean square error (WMSE) under a total power constraint. The problem becomes non-convex, and we propose an algorithm to solve it optimally. During the broadcast stage, an algorithm is proposed to find a precoder at the relay node and decoders at source nodes. The system performance is evaluated with estimation error and antenna correlation parameters. The effect of weighting parameters, relay location, and number of antennas at nodes are also considered in the numerical analysis. Numerical results confirm that our joint precoder-decoder algorithms provide the optimal solution to the minimization of WMSE with the total available power.

Detecting Primary User Emulation Attacks in Cognitive Radio networks via physical layer network coding

Primary user emulation (PUE) attacks on cognitive radio networks pose a serious threat to the deployment of this technique. Previous approaches usually depend on individual or combined received signal strength (RSS) measurements to detect emulators. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism based on physical layer network coding to detect the emulators. When two signal sequences interfere at the receiver, the starting point of collision is determined by the distances among the receiver and the senders. Using the signal interference results at multiple receivers and the positions of reference senders, we can determine the position of the ‘claimed’ primary user. We can then compare this localization result with the known position of the primary user to detect the PUE attack. We design a PUE detection mechanism for wireless networks with trustworthy reference senders. We analyze the overhead of the proposed approach and study its detection accuracy through simulation.

In this paper, the effective end-to-end secure communication of N-pair cellular network is studied. Promising multiple access scheme known as non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and physical layer network coding (PLNC) scheme are employed to improve the spectral and the temporal efficiency respectively. Also, this proposed model uses the physical layer security to ensure the secure wireless communication. It is assumed that the eavesdropper (Eve) tries to trace the confidential message from the legitimate user's. Hence, they generates the artificial noise (AN) to confuse the Eve. Closed form expression for the end-to-end outage probability of the proposed N-pair NOMA-PLNC wireless network is derived. Further, a closed form expression for the secrecy outage probability of the proposed network is derived using homogeneous Poisson point process (HPPP) and Gaussian -Laguerre quadrature. Numerical results are presented to validate theoretical findings. It is noteworthy that uplink performance of the proposed network is better than the network without PLNC scheme.

physical layer network coding (PNC) exploits the broadcast nature of wireless channel to obtain transmission efficiency gains. This paper proposes a hybrid field physical layer network coding (HFNC) approach and applys HFNC to the multi-user relay networks. The proposed method enables a reliable transmission with variable throughput under different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). With given constellation rotations at sources, the points of the equivalent superpositioned (ESP) constellation cluster. The HFNC-based decoding can be divided into two layers. Point-level (PL) decoding over the complex-field achieves a higher throughput as complex field network coding (CFNC), while cloud-level decoding defined in the finite-field is able to resist bad channel with a lower throughput. Excellent performances of symbol error probability (SEP) and transmission efficiency are proved by both theoretical analysis and simulation results.
