In this paper we consider a two-way relaying system, where two users A and B wish to exchange information with the help of a common relay R., To decode the superimposed signal from A and B efficiently, we propose a new scheme of jointing physical layer network coding (PNC) and channel decoding for multiple-access channel based on trellis coded modulation (TCM). Since TCM combines channel coding with modulation, the scheme improves the free distance of the coding sequence, thus more encoding gain is achieved. In addition, taking advantage of the linearity of convolutional code and MAC-XOR NC code, the digital bits of network coding are estimated directly. In a word, we propose a novel scheme which considers channel coding, modulation and PNC at the same time, so that not only the information transmission rate is increased, but also the reliability is improved.

Relay Selection Algorithms for Analog network coding OFDM Systems

We propose two relay selection schemes for analog network coding (ANC) OFDM systems. One uses OFDM Symbol-Based Max-Min-Min Selection Criterion ((OSBMSC)-S-3) to select only one relay for signal transmission, and the other uses a Subcarrier-Based Max-Min Selection Criterion ((SBMSC)-S-2) to select multiple relays for signal transmission. Assuming a frequency-domain fully-uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channel, we derive the asymptotic symbol error rate (SER) performance for both schemes, and show that they both can achieve full diversity. Using extensive simulations, we further show that the presented analytical results are useful to accurately predict the high SNR error performance of practical OFDM systems.

In this paper, we propose a joint network coding and relay selection scheme for two-way relay channels. In this scheme, first each source transmits its information to all relays. Next, two "best relays" which minimize the average bit -error rate (BER) are selected. Then, the selected relays combine the received information and broadcast them to the sources. The BER of the proposed scheme is obtained analytically and also verified through Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that the scheme has superior performance compared to an existing work that uses Alamouti space-time block coded (STBC).

In two-way relay channel (TWRC), terminal nodes exchange information assisted by a relay node. To exchange 1bit information over TWRC, the traditional save-and-forward scheme takes 4 time slots. The traditional network coding scheme can reduce the number of time slots to 3 since its relay node can mix the information from tow terminal nodes and then broadcast them in 1 time slot. Further, the physical network coding (PNC) and analog network coding (ANC) schemes, which allow terminal nodes send the signal simultaneously, only need 2 time slots to complete the information exchange. In this paper, by combining physical network coding and full-duplex (FD) techniques, the proposed scheme full-duplex physical network coding (FD-PNC) and full-duplex analog network coding (FD-ANC) can nearly reduce the required time slots to 1. Therein, full-duplex technology can make the nodes send and receive the signal at the same time and in the same frequency band by eliminating the self interference signal. Considering the channel error, we analyze their achievable throughput under the symmetric channel. We believe that taking full-duplex technology into network coding research may open many possibilities for future work.

Performance Analysis of Two-Step Bi-Directional Relaying with Multiple Antennas

In this paper we study decode-and-forward multi-antenna relay systems that achieve bi-directional communication in two time slots. We investigate different downlink broadcast schemes which employ binary or analog network coding at the relay. We also analyze and compare their performances in terms of diversity order and symbol error probability. It is shown that if exact downlink channel state information is available at the relay, using analog network coding in the form of multi-antenna maximal-ratio transmit beamforming to precode the information vectors at the relay gives the best performance. Then, we propose a Max-Min antenna selection with binary network coding scheme that can approach this performance with only partial channel state information.

Diversity-Multiplexing Trade-off in Adaptive Two-Way Relaying

Resource allocation for symmetric half-duplex bidirectional relaying networks is considered. Various decode-and-forward (DF) based relaying strategies that efficiently exploit quantized channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters (CSIT) are investigated. Adapting the number of channel uses for each relaying phase and allocating transmit power based on limited CSIT is shown to result in a significant improvement in the diversity-multiplexing trade-off (DMT). Without a direct link between the sources, power control is instrumental to efficiently exploit CSI feedback from sources to relay, resulting in superior performance that matches corresponding upper bounds in certain cases. With direct links between the sources, it is shown that DF two-way relaying does not suffer from a diversity loss when the multiplexing gain is high, a significant improvement over the dynamic DF protocol for one-way relaying. The best DMT is achieved when each source broadcasts partial CSI to the other nodes in the network, allowing them to adapt their transmit powers.

BER-modified regenerative protocols for OFDM-based two-way wireless relay channel

It is well known that symbol-level regenerative relay protocols suffer the error propagation problem because receiver decodes blindly and overlooks the probability of relay forwarding wrong bits. In a two-way relay networks, the problem still exists in both network coding (decode-and-forward) and physical network coding (denoise-and-forward) protocols. For today's widely adopted wide band Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, error propagation will dramatically restrict the system's end-to-end performance especially when frequency selective fading exists. In this paper, we propose a bit error rate (BER) modified decoding algorithm for these OFDM-based two-way symbol-level regenerative relay strategies. By confining the confidence level of demodulated soft information according to the likelihood of relay having made an error on each bit, this proposed algorithm significantly boosts the end-to-end BER performance of the system. Low Complexity Majority-Logic Decoding for LDPC-Coded PNC Systems

In this letter, we propose majority-logic decoding (MLGD) algorithms of low complexity for low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded physical-layer network coding (PNC) in a two-way relay channel (TWRC). In particular, we decode the transmit combination of two-user messages from the superimposed signal and then map the XOR message of two users. By exploiting the superposition rules of PNC, we develop hard decision-based and reliability-based decoding algorithms, i.e., modified one-step MLGD (M-OSMLGD) and iterative soft reliability-based decoding (M-ISRB), to iteratively update the combination of two-user messages. Moreover, we propose an improved M-ISRB (IM-ISRB) decoding to update the external reliability of the combination of two-user messages in each iteration. Simulation results show that the proposed decoding algorithms can achieve effective an trade-off between complexity and decoding performance for LDPC-coded PNC systems.

A Serial Joint Channel and physical Layer network Decoding in Two-Way Relay networks

This paper presents a novel joint channel and physical layer network decoding scheme for a two-way relay communication system. The proposed decoding scheme can be viewed as a serial concatenated decoding scheme with the source codes, different or identical, as the outer codes and the physical network coding (PNC) as the inner code. To achieve good error performance, iteratively decodable codes are used as the source codes. Decoding of the scheme consists of two loops, the inner-loop for which the source codes are decoded with a message-passing decoding algorithm and the outer-loop for which the reliability messages are passed between the source decoders and the PNC decoder for updating message reliabilities. Using two different protograph repeat-accumulate codes as the source codes for low decoder complexity, the proposed scheme achieves a superior performance. In the case that the source codes are identical, the proposed scheme outperforms the previously proposed decoding schemes for two-way relay communication systems with two source nodes.
