In this work, we propose the construction of distributed turbo network codes that have close-to-outage probability performance over the quasi-static fading multiple-access relay (MARC) channel, where two users share a common relay to transmit their information to the destination. Our designs are based on full-diversity channel multiplexing schemes initially developed for point-to-point block fading channels, namely horizontal multiplexing and h-pi-diagonal multiplexing. Word error rate performance is compared to outage probability using Monte Carlo simulations.

Two-way relaying has been known to double the spectral efficiency of the one-way relaying scheme in a single cell system. In this paper, we observe a unique intercell interference issue which is caused when employing the two-way relaying in a multicell system. To circumvent this uplink interference problem, we consider a fractional frequency reuse. We evaluate the performance of the decode-and-forward two-way relaying in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing multicell two-way relay network. In particular, the direct communication without relaying is also taken into account for the cell-center sector. Under this scenario, relay parameters such as the transmit power and position are optimized through numerical simulations to maximize the cell-throughput. In the simulations, a practical environment is considered, such as non-zero transition beam width for the cell-sectorization.

This paper considers a multi-way wireless network with three terminals which want to exchange or share data with the help of a relay: each terminal has some information that wants to transmit to the other two. The traditional way of doing this exchange either involves time-domain multiplexing (TDMA) or dedicated frequency-domain disjoint channels, at the expense of high bandwidth inefficiency. With the advent of network coding, and later physical-layer network coding, it became possible to reduce the number of time slots required to exchange the information between all the terminals. Moreover, using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) terminals and relays, the time-usage efficiency can be further boosted by transferring the burden from the time-domain to the spatial-domain via spatial multiplexing. This paper proposes the concatenation of the aforementioned techniques along with loopback interference cancellation, which recently became a central topic for the next generation of the physical-layer of wireless communications. The paper shows a protocol and techniques that allow all the information exchange between terminals to be reduced from the 6 time-slots, required in traditional TDMA, to one time-slot only, provided that the information packets are not too short. The error performance of this system is shown by means of simulation using MIMO Rayleigh fading channels.

The problem of full data exchange in multi-way relay channels (MWRCs) was considered in [1]. The algorithm proposed provides a throughput of 1/1.5N symbol per user per channel use (sym/U/CU) with binary signaling, which is a 33% increase compared to traditional relaying. In this paper, we analyze the average total energy consumption of the users for the proposed algorithm and compare it with traditional relaying. We also compare the power efficiency and error performance of this relaying scheme with other relaying techniques.

The physical-layer network coding (PNC) approach provides improved performance in many scenarios over "traditional" relaying techniques or network coding. This work addresses the generalization of PNC to wireless scenarios where network nodes have multiple antennas. We use a recent matrix decomposition, which allows, by linear pre- and post-processing, to simultaneously transform both channel matrices to triangular forms, where the diagonal entries, corresponding to both channels, are equal. This decomposition, in conjunction with precoding, allows to convert any two-input multiple-access channel (MAC) into parallel MACs, over which single-antenna PNC may be used. The technique is demonstrated using the two-way relay channel with multiple antennas. For this case it is shown that, in the high signal-to-noise regime, the scheme approaches the cut-set bound, thus establishing the asymptotic network capacity.

Military communication relies on robust and secure physical links that adhere to regulatory protocols and standards for communication. In unfamiliar terrain or hostile conditions these physical links can undergo deep-fading or intentional signal jamming, deteriorating the ongoing communication. Traditional retransmission technology or power adaptation would not be applicable to correct the outages seen in such scenarios, and often relays have been sought out as the solution. However given the exigency related to in-battle military communications, the latency with relaying cannot be tolerated and designing a scheme that is time-efficient is crucial. To this end, we discuss a practical approach to establishing bi-directional communication via a support node that acts a partial relay to the stranded military units, while maintaining its ongoing communication. This is possible through the use of a broadcast spatial multiplexing protocol implemented through space-time block coding at the relay. Our simulation results show us improved BER (bit-error rate) performance than the perfect direct link for high-SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) regimes, and comparable performance across the spectrum. We also demonstrate that our scheme is impervious to power asynchronicities between the stranded military nodes.

We study the application of trellis codes to physical-layer network coding in the two-way relay channel. In particular, we consider quaternary decoding on a combined trellis as an alternative to binary decoding and evaluate its gain in several scenarios, including asymmetric channels and the combination of different codes. We focus on the multiple-access phase, in which both terminals transmit their messages simultaneously, while in the second phase the relay retransmits the network-coded combination of both messages. We also evaluate the performance of both options when decoding the individual message of each terminal.

This paper investigates the iterative decoding for spectrally efficient two-way relay (TWR) communications in which two end nodes exchange information through a relay (R). With the use of physical-layer network coding (PNC), information exchange throughput can be significantly improved as only two orthogonal time slots (TS) are required to realize both the multiple access (MAC) and the broadcast (BC) transmissions. During the MAC stage, transmitted symbols from the end nodes are superimposed at R which decodes the exclusive-or (XOR) information of the two end nodes. However, with a high order modulation, symbol superposition will cause demapping ambiguity. This paper proposes a TWR communication system that employs the bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM). The iterative decoding, namely, the BICM-ID, is introduced to dissolve the demapping ambiguity. With iterative decoding, the transmitted symbol pair probabilities can be better estimated so that the demapper can provide better coded bit information for the decoder. The proposed work generalizes the iterative demapping-decoding approach for TWR channels. Our simulation results demonstrate significant iterative decoding gains can be achieved with a tendency of approaching the XOR-decoding bound.

The achievable sum-rate of the two-way relaying becomes far below the cut-set outer bound if the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) from one node to the relay is significantly different from the SNR from the other node to the relay, and particularly so for decode-and-forward or compute-and-forward type relaying. In this paper, we propose a buffer-aided compute-and-forward two-way relaying with lattice codes to improve the sum-rate in asymmetric SNR two-way relay channels (TWRCs). Specifically, the relay can store some amount of data received in the multiple access phase before forwarding it, thereby controlling the amount of data to be transmitted to each direction in the broadcast phase. Simulation results show that the sum-rate can be improved with the use of buffers compared to the conventional two-way relaying without buffers.

We study user cooperation in the context of physical-layer network coding. We examine a system in which users cooperatively transmit their messages to receivers whose task is to recover a finite-field linear combination of the users' messages. We present a cooperative scheme, based on a lattice-coding approach to block Markov encoding, that improves the computation rate over that of existing non-cooperative techniques. We apply our results to a simple relay network, showing that when inter-user gains are relatively strong, cooperative computation significantly improves network throughput.
