This paper deals with the synthesis of planar arrays. In the framework of iterative search procedures, a method based on a genetic algorithm (GA) is presented. Starting from the definition of a suitably defined cost function, thinning and weighting a randomly generated array configuration, the multi-purpose stochastic procedure is able to satisfy various antenna constraints to determines an optimal trade-off among contrasting requirements. In order to confirm the reliability of the proposed approach (also in comparison with the related literature), some highly optimized antenna array designs are reported and discussed. In this communication, a planar antenna array is proposed in millimeter-wave bands by using a modified bulk silicon micromachining technology. The proposed antenna array is designed and fabricated based on air-filled microstrip line structures. By periodically blocking the microstrip line, fringing electric fields along the microstrip lines are excited in phase, which contributes to achieving high gain performance with a relatively compact feeding structure. Moreover, the proposed antenna array is designed and fabricated by a modified bulk silicon micromachining technology. The process is quite suitable for designing low loss antennas in millimeter-wave bands. In the process, the silicon wafers are deeply etched and gold-plated. As a result, microstrip line structures in the proposed antenna array are filled with air medium, which mitigates dielectric loss and improves radiation efficiency. A prototype of the proposed antenna array is fabricated and tested to verify the design strategy. The dimension of the antenna array is 49.40 x 20.00 x 0.75 mm(3). The simulated -10 dB bandwidth is 58.8-59.7 GHz and the measured bandwidth is 58.8-59.5 GHz. In the operating band, the maximum simulated gain of the proposed antenna is 19.8 dBi and the minimum simulated gain is 18.3 dBi. The measurement results illustrate that the maximum gain of the proposed antenna array is 18.8 dBi and the minimum gain is 17.0 dBi.

Low-Cost High Gain planar antenna array for 60-GHz Band Applications

An effective development of a class of low-cost planar antenna arrays having a high reproducibility is presented for 60-GHz band system applications. The proposed antenna arrays, based on the substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) scheme, consists of one compact SIW 12-way power divider and 12 radiating SIWs each supporting 12 radiating slots. A 50-Omega conductor-backed coplanar waveguide (CBCPW) integrated with CBCPW-to-SIW transition is directly used as the input of the antenna array, thus allowing to accommodate other circuits or MMICs at a minimum cost. An antenna array prototype was implemented on Rogers RT/Duroid 6002 substrate with thickness of 20 mils by our standard PCB process. Measured gain is about 22 dBi with a side lobe suppression of 25 dB in the H-plane and 15 dB in the E-Plane while the bandwidth for the 10-dB return loss is 2.5 GHz.

Beamforming Optimization of Linear and planar antenna array Using a New Algorithm Based on the Corrosion Diffusion Behavior

This paper presents a new optimization algorithm that efficiently can optimize the beamforming of the linear and planar antenna arrays. The new algorithm is called the corrosion diffusion optimization algorithm (CDOA) because its concept is concluded from the behavior of the corrosion distribution on the metal surfaces. The general performance of the new algorithm is compared with some other important algorithms via some standard benchmark functions. This comparison results in about 100% success rate for the proposed algorithm with high execution speed and low complexity compared to the other algorithms. Subsequently, CDOA is applied to solve some of the antenna array beamforming problems by optimizing the amplitude of the antenna weights vector and/or the inter-element spacing between the elements of the array. The algorithm results in a side lobe ratio larger than 22 dB in solving the problem of enhancing the side lobe ratio. Besides, CDOA operates efficiently in generating a flat top and triangular beam shaping with enhanced side lobe ratio. Furthermore, all the jamming signals are perfectly eliminated in the anti-jamming antenna array system when optimizing the weights vector of the array using the proposed algorithm. For each beamforming problem, the outcomes of CDOA are compared with other optimization algorithms to highlight its superiority in solving these kinds of problems.

In this paper, we have presented a solution to generate a 2D focal spot array that does not need to be optimized and has the characteristics of a variable quantity, adjustable gap, and location. With the aid of a planar antenna array placed at the focal point of two high numerical aperture (NA) objective lenses to concentrate the field radiation, the focal spot array is easily achieved. The results show that there is a one-to-one correspondence with the array elements and the spots, which is mainly reflected in the following aspects. The location of the spot is only determined by the corresponding element, the number of spots and elements are equal, every spot in the 2D focal array has the same strength distribution.

The construction, work principle and analysis results for microwave impedance matching in corporate-feeding network, cooperating with planar antenna array for S-band using shunt-stubs have been presented in the paper. All planar antenna arrays cooperate with signal distribution networks. This one ensures provide impedance matching between input port and antenna radiating elements too. The use of stubs for reactance correction in microwave and antenna technique is well-known technique. The use of the stubs in every stage of power splitting ensures high level in impedance matching. The analysis for 2, 4 and 8 - elements antenna array was made. The physical realization of the 4-element array without and with additional stubs were made. Obtained measure results confirm numerical analysis results.

In this paper, we present a four-element compact planar antenna array for global navigation satellite systems. The array is designed for the 1575.42 MHz (L1 band) frequency having an inter-element separation of d = lambda/4. In order to compensate mutual coupling and mismatching, a specifically designed decoupling and matching network has been integrated into the array. We investigate the resulting antenna performance, such as axial-ratio bandwidth, and realized gain, as referred to the decoupling and matching network input ports. Furthermore, we present a receiver model to characterize the equivalent spatial carrier-to-interference plus noise ratio of the antenna array, decoupling and matching network, and low-noise amplifier, using a conventional null-constraint beamformer.

Thinned planar antenna array synthesis using a hybrid approach combining almost difference sets and weighted total least squares method

This paper introduces a hybrid approach for designing thinned planar antenna arrays with low peak sidelobe levels (PSLLs). The standard almost difference set (ADS) approach allows the analytical determination of the turned-on element positions within the array configuration, but it provides suboptimal performance in PSLL reduction. To address this limitation, a hybrid method is presented by integrating the ADS approach with the weighted total least squares (WTLS) method. Simulation results from various case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the hybrid ADS-WTLS method in designing thinned planar antenna arrays with low PSLLs. Additionally, the performance of the synthesized designs obtained through the hybrid method is validated using electromagnetic (EM) simulations.

Optimization-free two-dimensional focal spot array generated by the use of radiation pattern from a planar antenna array

We propose an optimization-free method for creating a two-dimensional (2-D) identical focal spot array with a prescribed number, tunable interval, and controllable position. This can be realized easily by backward focusing of the field radiated from a planar antenna array situated at the foci of two high-numerical-aperture objective lenses. It is demonstrated here that the number of spots in the focal field array is equal to the number of elements in the planar antenna array;the intervals between the two adjacent spots along the x and y directions depend solely on the gaps between the two corresponding elements, and the position for each spot is determined totally by the location of the corresponding element. Furthermore, the intensity distribution of each spot in the 2-D focal array is identical. These kinds of 2-D focal spot arrays with controllable characteristics may find applications in parallel optical micromanipulation, multifocal multiphoton microscopy, and multiparticle parallel acceleration.
