A wide-beam antenna and a planar phased array with wide-angle scanning performance based on image theory are proposed. To solve the wide-angle scanning problem, a summative evaluation of basic types of carrier-based antennas is given and the antenna types available for wide-angle scanning arrays or end-fire arrays are pointed out. Afterward, a wide-angle scanning array with an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) ground is proposed. The main beam direction of the array can scan from -89 degrees to 90 degrees in the H-plane with a gain fluctuation less than 3 dB and the scanning 3-dB beamwidth can cover a range from -105 degrees to 105 degrees.. An excellent wide-angle scanning performance from the broadside direction to the end-fire direction can be obtained by the proposed method, which can be used to guide the design of wide-angle scanning arrays.

The design of a planar phased array composing of 12 linear subarrays in the vertical plane has been investigated in this paper. Each linear in-phase subarray consists of 24 compact stripline-fed antennas in the horizontal plane. The proposed linear subarray is fed by a 24-port parallel feeding network where amplitudes at the output ports are controlled by a Taylor distribution with sidelobe level of 36 dB. The planar array has been fabricated and measured in the frequency band from 3.2 - 3.6 GHz. The simulation and measurement results show a good agreement and the planar phased array is adapted to the requirements for 3D radar application.

On the boundary diffraction wave method for the analytical prediction of the radiation from large planar phased array antennas

A boundary diffraction wave (BDW) formulation is developed for predicting the collective radiation from large finite planar phased array antennas in a relatively efficient manner. This collective radiation is described in terms of a set of Floquet waves (FWs) arising from the array interior, together with the diffraction of these FWs by the finite array element truncation boundary;the latter is represented by a line integral of the incremental diffracted field over this boundary. In general, the BDW line integral must be evaluated numerically. The current distribution over the whole array is first obtained, for a given excitation, by full wave numerical methods. A traveling wave expansion is employed to represent the array distribution so as to facilitate the development of the BDW solution for arrays. Some numerical results based on the BDW are presented to demonstrate the utility and accuracy of the method for analyzing large planar arrays.

This paper is presented as a theoretical analysis for dual-polarized planar phased array radar accuracy requirements in meteorological applications. Based on the local feature of the element pattern, a simplified linear model is developed to approximate the pattern near the beam direction. In order to evaluate the performance under different conditions, a Monte Carlo simulation method is introduced. The simulation results for ATSR mode are shown and analyzed. Finally, the conclusions are made.

An architecture optimizing method in planar phased array is given based on Genetic Algorithm (GA). Pattern sidelobe is improved by optimizing array architecture via division of subarrays. Analyze subarray pattern and give out the flow chart of subarray segmentation. By adaptive crossover operator and independent genetic operation, traditional GA is improved. Convergence speed is accelerated and calculation efficiency is enhanced remarkably. Simulations of segmenting 24x28 array into 50 subarrays are provided. Pattern sidelobe is improved by 14.22dB after 60 generations of GA.

There are several leading challenges for planar phased arrays. First, for performance, it is difficult to achieve wide angle scan over a wide bandwidth. Second, their costs have been prohibitively high. The third challenge is to be thin and lightweight, suitable for mounting on various terrestrial and ex-terrestrial platforms and for ease of transportation. Consequently, Multioctave planar phased arrays (MPPA) having multioctave bandwidth, in particular thin MPPAs, are highly desirable. Applications of MPPAs include radars, Electronic Warfare (EW) systems, communications systems, and next-generation cellphone base stations.

A 60 GHz wide-angle scanning (2×4) planar phased array based on mushroom-type high-impedance surface (HIS) is proposed. The periodic HIS is applied to broaden beam scanning angle of the planar phased array in xoz-plane which only has two antenna units. The main beam of the designed planar phased array can be scanned to ± 60° in the xoz-plane, compared to only scanning ± 43° in xoz-plane without HIS. Finally, the proposed planar phased array antenna can achieve ± 60° beam scanning range in both xoz- and yoz- planes operating at 60 GHz. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a theoretical analysis for the accuracy requirements of the planar polarimetric phased array radar (PPPAR) in meteorological applications. Among many factors that contribute to the polarimetric biases, four factors are considered and analyzed in this study, namely, the polarization distortion due to the intrinsic limitation of a dual-polarized antenna element, the antenna pattern measurement error, the entire array patterns, and the imperfect horizontal and vertical channels. Two operation modes, the alternately transmitting and simultaneously receiving (ATSR) mode and the simultaneously transmitting and simultaneously receiving (STSR) mode, are discussed. For each mode, the polarimetric biases are formulated. As the STSR mode with orthogonal waveforms is similar to the ATSR mode, the analysis is mainly focused on the ATSR mode and the impacts of the bias sources on the measurement of polarimetric variables are investigated throughMonte Carlo simulations. Some insights of the accuracy requirements are obtained and summarized.

An insensitive planar phased array antenna featuring high efficiency for 5G applications is introduced in this study. 64 compact slot-loop antenna elements have been used to form the planar array. The antenna is designed on a low cost FR4 substrate and has good performance in terms of gain and efficiency. This property has been achieved by applying a new type of slot-loop resonators in the design. The proposed antenna is designed to operate at 21-23.5 GHz and has consistent performance for different values of dielectric constants and loss tangents. It has high-gain, high-efficiency radiation beams at both sides of the substrate and could be used for mobile base stations (MBS). The proposed planar array could be integrated with the transceivers on the low-cost printed circuit boards (PCBs) to reduce the manufacturing cost.

A frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar system with a planar phased array based on antenna switching is considered. The radar system consists of N-1 linear antenna arrays where each linear antenna array consists of N-2 receiving antennas. In each cycle, the receiving antennas on each linear antenna array are switched to the single receiving channel in turn from the first antenna to the N-2 th antenna. An accurate and detailed system model for the radar system is addressed. The Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) analysis on the accuracy of estimating the azimuth angle, elevation angle, velocity, and range using the radar system is presented.
