Multivariate block polar quantization

We introduce multivariate block polar quantization (MBPQ). MBPQ minimizes the weighted squared-error distortion for a set of complex variables representing one block of a signal under a resolution constraint for the entire block. MBPQ performs below the lower bound for classical bivariate quantization, both for Gaussian complex variables and for complex variables found from sinusoidal analysis of audio data. Still, it is of similar complexity as traditional polar quantizers. In the case of audio data, we found a performance gain of about 2.5 dB over the best performing conventional resolution-constrained polar quantization (an extension of unrestricted polar quantization).

The polar receiver architecture is a receiver design that captures the envelope and phase information of the signal rather than its in-phase and quadrature components. Several studies have demonstrated the robustness of polar receivers to phase noise and other nonlinearities. Yet, the information-theoretic limits of polar receivers with finite-precision quantizers have not been investigated in the literature. The main contribution of this work is to identify the optimal signaling strategy for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with polar quantization at the output. More precisely, we show that the capacity-achieving modulation scheme has an amplitude phase shift keying (APSK) structure. Using this result, the capacity of the AWGN channel with polar quantization at the output is established by numerically optimizing the probability mass function of the amplitude. The capacity of the polar-quantized AWGN channel with b1-bit phase quantizer and optimized single-bit magnitude quantizer is also presented. Our numerical findings suggest the existence of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) thresholds, above which the number of amplitude levels of the optimal APSK scheme and their respective probabilities change abruptly. Moreover, the manner in which the capacity-achieving input evolves with increasing SNR depends on the number of phase quantization bits.

The problem of securing the communication in an IoT sensor network from malicious eavesdroppers is studied. One-time pad encryption is found to be a suitable encryption method for this type of setting, reducing the problem to the generation of secret keys to be used for the encryption. We propose a novel physical-layer security based key generation protocol where a Gaussian source derived from the wireless communicaton channel between key generating pairs is transformed into an erasure channel. The proposed method is shown to outperform other similar methods when allowing for a higher BER in the generated keys and constraining the rate of communication. We also analyze how the BER of the generated keys affects the underlying inference task of the sensor network.

Binary biometric representations have great significance for data compression and template protection. In this paper, we introduce pairwise polar quantization. Furthermore, aiming to optimize the discrimination between the genuine Hamming distance (GHD) and the imposter Hamming distance (IHD), we propose two feature pairing strategies: the long-short (LS) strategy for phase quantization, as well as the long-long (LL) strategy for magnitude quantization. Experimental results for the FRGC face database and the FVC2000 fingerprint database show that phase bits provide reasonably good performance, whereas magnitude bits obtain poor performance.

In audio coding technology, the framework based on the modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) has been mainly adopted in the literature and audio coding standards. The MDCT does not introduce blocking effects while allowing perfect reconstruction, and can evade the data rate increase with a 50% overlapped window. However, when using the temporal noise shaping for coding the transient signal, the undesired aliasing may occur, and the MDCT window should be designed under the time-domain aliasing cancellation constraint. These limitations can be simply avoided by using the discrete Fourier transform (DFT), but it increases the data rate by double because of the complex-valued representation of the DFT coefficients. In this study, we propose a scheme that effectively quantizes the complex-valued signal in the comparable data rate with the real-valued coding scheme. The proposed coding scheme is based on unrestricted polar quantization for complex variables combined with the psychoacoustic model. This study demonstrates the feasibility of the quantization scheme for the complex-valued coefficients of the same data rate with comparable perceptual distortion against the conventional MDCT-based audio coding. © ICA *** rights reserved

In this paper, a simple and complete asymptotical analysis is given for a mean square error (MSE) piecewise uniform polar quantizer (PUPQ). We show that PUPQ has the same performance as the asymptotic nonuniform polar quantizer (NPQ) and has implementation complexity between complexities of NPQ and uniform polar quantization. The goal of this paper is solving the quantization problem in case of PUPQ and finding the corresponding support region.

In this paper, the linearization of product polar quantizers is presented. Product polar quantizers are very important in A/D (analogue-to-digital) conversion and compression of measurement signals with Gaussian distribution, as they have much better performances than scalar quantizers and can be widely used in many modern measurement systems such as telemetry, telemedicine, wireless sensor networks, distributed measurement systems and remote control systems. The key limiting factor in the realization of product polar quantizers is the fact that the companding function for the magnitude quantization is non-linear. To decrease complexity of realization of product polar quantizers, we suggest the linearization of the companding function. Two methods of linearization are proposed. Although both methods are good, we highlight the second method, which achieves high performances with a small number of linear segments, due to optimization of the last linear segment. The convergence of expressions for the distortion before and after linearization is proved. The analysis is developed in the general manner (for any companding function) and applied on a mu-law companding function. The influence of linearization on the robustness of product polar quantizers is analysed. The best solutions for the design of the linearized product polar quantizers, considering complexity and quality, are proposed. The linearization of product polar quantizers compatible with the widely used G.711 standard is performed. It is shown that linearized product polar quantizers, although much simpler, can achieve performances very close to those of the corresponding non-linearized quantizers. Theory is proved by the simulation and experiment.

Uniform polar quantizer with three-stage hierarchical variable-length coding for measurement signals with Gaussian distribution

In this paper, a new model of the uniform polar quantizer with three-stage hierarchical coding is proposed, for the analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion of measurement signals with the Gaussian distribution. The aim is to design quantizer with small complexity which can achieve very good performances. Proposed model accomplishes this aim. Applied code uses variable-length codewords, in order to achieve compression. The proposed model achieves much better performances (for 2-3 dB higher SQNR (signal-to-quantization noise ratio) for the same bit-rate) compared to the uniform scalar quantizer. Due to its small complexity and very good performances, the proposed model is suitable for using in many measurement systems for A/D conversion of measurement signals. This model especially can be useful in measurement systems where transmission of measurement signals is performed (e.g. telemetry, telemedicine, wireless sensor networks, etc.). Laplacian-like data in multiple dimensions to Significantly improve the overload characteristics for quantization, The rotation is motivated by the geometry of the Laplacian probability distribution, and can be achieved with only additions and subtractions using a Walsh-Hadamard transform, Its theoretical and simulated results for scalar, lattice, and polar quantization are presented in this paper, followed by a direct application to image compression, We show that rotating the image data before quantization not only improves compression performance, but also increases robustness to the channel noise and deep fades often encountered in wireless communication.

Multi-Band Transmission Using Reconfigurable Complex Multi-Band Delta Sigma polar Modulator

This brief presents a new reconfigurable complex multi-band delta sigma polar modulator (CMB-DSPM) architecture for multi-band transmission. In this brief, a 6th order band-pass delta sigma modulator (DSM) is designed and implemented for reconfigurable triple-band transmission. The proposed DSM architecture utilizes the advantage of a complex DSM structure to reduce the required processing block and polar quantizer to reduce the quantization noise. The proposed CMB-DSPM architecture improves the in-band and out-of-band performance in terms of signal-to-noise distortion ratio (SNDR) and coding efficiency (CE), respectively. The proposed scheme is validated in MATLAB/SIMULINK-based digital signal processing platform using three 5 MHz long-term evolution (LTE) signals. The results show up to 12.4 dB improvement in SNDR and 12.3% improvement in CE compared to the standard cartesian DSM architecture. The measured EVM is below 3%, which shows the good in-band performance of the proposed scheme.
