Low-Complexity DOA Estimation via Synthetic Coprime polarization sensitive array with Reduced Mutual Coupling in Nonuniform Noise

To improve the performance of underdetermined direction of arrival (DOA) estimation in the scenario of strong mutual coupling and unknown nonuniform noise, this paper presents a novel coprime polarization sensitive array (PSA) with limited antenna number and proposes a low-complexity DOA estimation method via iterative covariance matrix reconstruction. The proposed synthetic array is composed of two single-polarized subarrays with dipole or loop antennas. Owing to the polarization domain, it can efficiently reduce the mutual coupling between subarrays, which dominates the effect of mutual coupling in the existing coprime arrays. For effectively eliminating the nonuniform noise, the cross-covariance matrix between subarrays is utilized. Based on it, the full aperture and all degrees of freedoms of the difference coarray with holes are obtained, and then, initial DOAs are estimated by using orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm. The oblique projection operators depending on initial DOAs are constructed to fill holes in difference coarray, in order to generate a larger covariance matrix for refined angle estimation. Then, a fast iterative procedure associated with covariance matrix reconstruction is given to achieve final DOA estimation, for further enhancing estimation performance. Theoretical analysis and simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed array and method.

In this paper, we use the DOA estimation of timefrequency analysis on coprime polarization sensitive array, which can increase the number of signals estimated by multiple signal classification (MUSIC)algorithm and improve the degree of freedom of array. The polarization information can improve the estimation accuracy and help distinguish the signals with close wave direction. Time-frequency analysis can improve the estimation performance of multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm in the case of low signal to noise ratio (SNR). The feasibility of time-frequency transformation in the coprime polarization sensitive array is proved, and MUSIC algorithm based on time-frequency analysis (P-TFMUSIC) is proposed to enhance the estimation performance of direction of arrival (DOA), and the function of the algorithm is verified by simulation.

This paper presents the performance evaluation of antenna array-based direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. To illuminate the capability of polarization sensitive array (PSA) for localization, this paper studies its performance bound in contrast to the scalar array (SA). We formulate the signal models of PSA and SA in a unified format and describe the expression of the Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLB) for multi-variables. Then the CRLB of the azimuth and elevation angles are derived for them by varying array formation and direction of signal arrival. Simulations in various cases validate the benefits of polarization information for localization and provide guidance for array design.

This letter presents a design and implementation of a bluetooth low energy (BLE) localization scheme using polarization sensitive arrays, where both the direction and polarization information is explored for high-accuracy positioning. The signal frequency offset and channel mismatch error are mitigated by the proposed frequency compensation and array calibration algorithm, respectively. Moreover, we develop an alternate search algorithm for angle estimation and derive the Cramer-Rao lower bound for performance evaluation. Finally, we design a real-time single-anchor BLE localization system using angular information, which is demonstrated to achieve a median localization accuracy of 30 cm in experiments.

Anti-Jamming Algorithm of polarization-sensitive array Based on Improved Constraint Matrix and Orthogonal Subspace Projection

The vulnerability of satellite navigation signals to suppressive interference is a major concern owing to the extremely low power. The polarization-sensitive array adds polarization diversity capability, providing outstanding anti-jamming properties. Null depth is a crucial indicator of interference mitigation capability. This article proposes a new weight vector calculation method for space-polarization-domain adaptive processing (SPAP) by focusing on interference null depth, which can improve the anti-interference performance of polarization-sensitive arrays. First, the realistic received signal model of the polarization-sensitive array is built. Second, the realistic radiation pattern of the crossed dipole antenna and the polarization characteristics of the signal are considered in the constraint matrix of the minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) to obtain a new anti-jamming weight matrix. Finally, the orthogonal projection subspace method is introduced to effectively deepen the interference null, and its orthogonality with the interference subspace is improved by projecting the new anti-interference weight matrix into the noise subspace of the received signal, and the rationality and effectiveness of the method are verified by theoretical derivation. Through simulation experiments on a uniform linear array (ULA) and a uniform circular array (UCA), the results indicate that the proposed method can effectively increase the null depth in the space and polarization domains by 12-28 dB, which significantly improves the array's anti-interference capability.

Aiming at the uniform circular array model of conformal antenna array, we proposed a spatial spectrum estimation algorithm of polarization sensitive array based on compensating spatial domain manifold matrix. Because the conformal antenna is highly sensitive to the polarization information of the incident signal, traditional spatial spectrum direction-finding algorithm is not suitable. Meanwhile, when the classical polarization sensitive array spatial spectrum estimation algorithm is adopted, the interference generated by the anti-radiation detection system in the case of multipath, signal refraction and diffraction will be directly introduced into the model of the polarization sensitive array spatial spectrum finding theory, and then, resulting in a large estimation error of direction of arrival (DOA) and polarization parameters. The algorithm compensates the spatial domain components of the spatial domain array manifold matrix, which combine with the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) DOA estimation algorithm to construct a four-dimensional polarization sensitive array spatial spectrum function. And then, applying the reducing dimension spectral peak search to achieve the two-dimensional DOA and polarization parameters estimation of the target signal. Compared with the classical polarization sensitive array MUSIC direction-finding algorithm, the algorithm we explored can suppress the front-end error of the system, avoid the mismatch between the spatial domain components and the theoretical model of the algorithm, and realize the high precision direction-finding and tracking of the target signal.

Target detection is critical in many mission critical sensors and sensor network (MC-SSN) applications. For target detection in complicated electromagnetic environment, DOA estimation using polarization sensitive array (PSA) has been receiving increased attentions. In this paper, we propose the parallel co-prime polarization sensitive array (PCP-PSA) which consists of the cocentered orthogonal dipole triads (CODTs) to estimate two-dimensional direction-of-arrival (2D DOA) and polarization parameters. The degrees of freedom (DOFs) have been extended due to the co-prime structure, so that the more signals can be detected and the estimation accuracy is improved. In order to reduce the computation complexity, we construct a new cross-covariance matrix based on the CODTs, which converts the two-dimensional DOA estimation into two independent one-dimensional DOA estimations. Then, the spatial smoothing-based multiple signal classification algorithm(MUSIC) and the sparse representation-based method are applied to estimate 2D DOA with only one-dimensional (1D) peak searching and 1D dictionary, respectively. Finally, the polarization parameters are estimated by using the cross-covariance matrix between components of electric field vector. Compared with previous PSA-based algorithms, the proposed algorithm based on PCP-PSA can solve the underdetermined 2D DOA and polarization parameters estimation problem and has better estimation accuracy. Theoretical analyses and simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods in terms of computational complexity and estimation accuracy.

The problem of multiple incident signals' direction of arrival (DOA) and polarization estimation with linear spatially separated polarization sensitive array (SS-PSA) is investigated in sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) framework. SS-PSA is widely studied due to its low mutual coupling compared with the spatially collocated polarization sensitive array. On the one hand, the sparse representation of data model of proposed array can be expressed skillfully as a block-sparse representation. On the other hand, block sparse Bayesian learning (BSBL) algorithm has excellent performance in recovering the block-sparse signals. Therefore, in this paper, BSBL algorithm is extended to SS-PSA for DOA and polarization estimation. Firstly, a sparse representation model without parameters coupling is established, where the sparse coefficient vector is a block-sparse signal. Secondly, the expectation-maximization method in BSBL framework, i.e., BSBL-EM algorithm, is proposed to recover the block-sparse signal. Lastly, angles estimation can be obtained from the recovered sparse signal according to the intra-block correlation. Simulation results demonstrate that the BSBL-EM algorithm used in DOA and polarization estimation with SS-PSA exhibits better performance compared with Block Orthogonal Matching Pursuit algorithm and Group Basis Pursuit.

Three-Parallel Co-Prime polarization sensitive array for 2-D DOA and polarization Estimation via Sparse Representation

Co-prime array configurations are considered attractive due to the extension of degrees of freedom (DOFs) and the sparse placement of array elements. In this paper, a 2-D direction-of-arrival (DOA) and polarization estimation algorithm are proposed with the three-parallel co-prime polarization sensitive array which consists of the co-centered orthogonal loop and dipole. A novel cross-covariance matrix, that not contains the polarization parameters, is constructed to decouple the joint estimation problem of 2-D DOA angles and polarization parameters. Then, by using the vectorization operation and linear transformation, a virtual uniform linear array with larger DOFs is achieved. Meanwhile, a sparse representation-based algorithm is presented to estimate 2-D DOA angles with the only 1-D dictionary. To avoid the selection of regularization parameter in the sparse recovery process, we derive the constraint form of the optimization problem based on the upper bound of the data fitting error, which can reduce the effect of improper selection on regularization parameter. Finally, the polarization parameters are estimated via a least squares method. Since the proposed algorithm constructs the data vector with cross-covariance matrices between subarrays, the influence of noise is suppressed, and the estimation accuracy with low signal-to-noise ratio is enhanced. In the end, the simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

This paper presents a new polarization sensitive array composed of a two-level nested subarray and an optimally nested subarray with orthogonal oriented antennas, and then proposes a correlation matrix reconstruction based estimation method for direction of arrival (DOA) and polarization state. The optimally nested array with $N$ antennas can provide maximum degrees of freedom (DOF) of difference co-array (i.e., $(N - 1)N + 1$ ), which increases the aperture of the proposed array. However, both the difference co-arrays of the optimally nested subarray and between subarrays are nonuniform linear arrays (i.e., holes appear), and hence most existing methods fall to use all information received from the proposed array, resulting in estimation performance loss. Depending on the oblique projection (OP) operator constructed by initial DOAs from the two-level nested subarray, the proposed method first fills the holes to generate the virtual correlation matrix with increased DOF. Then the DOA and polarization state are estimated efficiently. The resulting DOAs can be regarded as the new initial angles for OP operator construction, to iterate aforesaid steps for estimation performance enhancement. The Cramr-Rao bound (CRB) and the computational complexity of the proposed method are provided. Simulation results are given to validate the effectiveness of the proposed array and the proposed method.
